  • what is his strings set up, it looks to me like he plays with the B string from a classical guitar, can somebody correct me ?

  • @nfrantnik . This is a baritone guitar and has a low Nashville tuning. The low E, A, D and G strings are all tuned up an octave. The B and high E are the same as in normal tuning.

  • @Spymoni thank you maestro ;)

  • damn, that was so good

  • video response:

  • 3w.diegoriedemann.cl

  • wonderful guitar tone

  • @upT3mpo You = Scum of the Earth.

  • @Gundogdogdog I = Awesome. Pat Metheny = You = Boring.

  • Why do Brits say "literally" literally all the fucking time?

  • keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey change

  • @ColorMusical There are six strings but he has four bass strings on it, which are easier to see because they are bigger. I'm curious about his tuning. It's really unusual to see someone with the strings all mixed up like that.

  • Bottom two are bass strings,Atkins did an album with that setup in the 60's

  • Comment removed

  • A few fuck ups 2:02 - bottom string sounds out a few times after that. Meh.

  • @upT3mpo Nobody gives a damn about that....

  • @galabadur Wow, another youtube idiot who thinks they must marshall other peoples comments. They are called COMMENTS, they are meant to represent peoples opinions. Get over it.

  • @upT3mpo yes, he makes mistakes, stfu

  • @Fenderkid67 stfu for being a lazy speller

  • @upT3mpo just a re-harm...pretty sure that's on purpose.

  • @pzcato great news.

  • @upT3mpo nope not the case. How would you even know?

  • Are there any other guitar virtuosos out there like Pat? All I can think of is Sco.

  • @TheAxis456 Larry carlton, jody fisher, joe bonamassa, joe pass, greg koch, django reinhardt, Bireli lagrene, sylvain luc, and much much more

  • @TheAxis456 Sylvain Luc is the Picasso of modern guitar! I'm confident you'll not be disappointed.

  • unbelievable artist!! People, he's a genius!

  • @ColorMusical are you serious?

  • Great guitarist but he looks like he's trying to take a shit!

  • Oh... my... god..

  • I love the man. Pat if sort your hair out il have a sex change and marry you

  • @jrodjohn - theres medication for that. your comment that is.

  • @noodlesmealey haha good point i think too much of the medication caused the comment

  • luv it luv it

  • How has he tuned thatguitar? Unusual string set-up, especially the second string! Is that a wound nylon?

  • @ianrkav its tuned like a regular guitar, but its a baritone, tuned down a 5th. He puts light strings in the middle and heavier strings on top, same notes in a different range, gives it a unique sound

  • @BananaRelapse Ok thanks for that.:-) It is a unique sound.

  • Master? Virtuoso would be more appropriate:-)

  • 1.58.. new pair of pants please

  • @MrDaveFerrier I know what you mean :3

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • If anyone is wondering about Pat's tuning, here's what I got after listening him playing open strings. From low to high A1 D2 G2 (these are the exact pitch of the first 3 strings from a bass guitar) C3 (so far so good, this string is made of nylon and by the moment Pat is tuning this in fourths). Now comes the weird part, the next it's a steel string clearly lower than C3, I'm pretty sure it's an A2, and the last one it's a fifth higher, an E3. Hope someone could corroborate this! :D

  • @adondebass From what I heard him say, he took a baritone guitar tuned DGCFAD and tuned the middle two strings up an octave. I haven't tried that against this song because I think it might have been written in the liner notes of his album One Quiet Night.

  • Beautiful !

  • I am will see him tomorrow me dream's come true<,,,,,,,Sammy

  • master? well not fair enough :)

  • Pat Metheny is just unreal....this is out of this world! When the bottom end comes in at at 0:44 - well, what can you say

  • " " !!!!!

  • Like a fine wine...

he is in a class of one.

  • A Genius... that's all

  • only 158k views?! Jeez...

  • I return to the sound of Watercolors. During so many time I was sure that the song was possible to be better played than the first relase. Pat did it. Pat always do it.

  • one of my all time favorite guitar solos.

  • amazing!

  • actually its a whole step lower. a-a

  • genius, Pat never ceases to asound me !

  • We absolutely love Media Outlet Online for getting f*r ee m..uzzic similar to this one... You can search it using Google.

  • I like Metheny's baritone guitar tunes and I'd like to play them by myself.

What's the tuning of this tune?

  • Is that a wound B string???

  • I love him. I think he is an amazing musician

  • I'm pretty sure he's got that baritone strung up nashville style...slick.

  • @sc06yl Exactly. In an interview, Pat Metheny said that he had this baritone custom-made and then

strung up in "folk" style. I'm not a musician, but I reckon that "folk" style means in the same kind

of nashville style you're talking about. Magnificent music.

  • Such a great performance.

For those who were wondering, it's a baritone guitar.

  • Awkward tuned guitar, impossible to play exactly his rendition

  • @sa7sul this guitar is in standard tuning. however, it is a baritone guitar, so it is a Perfect 4th (5 half steps) lower than a concert guitar. So the tuning from 6-1 B,E,A,D,G,B, but this can be played in standard tuning, it will just sound a P4 higher than this version. Also, he improvs a large section towards the end of the song (actually playing in 2 different keys at one point?!?!) so this rendition would be hard to transcribe. He does have a standard transcription available.

  • Pat = God. Enough said?

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful cover. I´d like to play this version too. Must sit down and check all the chords, i hope its possible. Its standard tuning but dropped down somewhat i guess. I also wonder about his sound, he´s a genius here too. The mix between sweet nylon and steel.. very nice.. Its a Midi driven guitar and the lower 3 strings might be doubled by a n upright bass sound, Mr. Metheny is that right? ;-)

  • I won this guy's competition thing he has and so I got to go to a concerto of his....I met him after the concert and I shook his hand and his fingers were like burning hot....haha

  • He's Einstein of the guitar, look at his explosive hair. Way to go Pat

  • I've seen Pat live. I can now die happily.

  • love u mr awesome :)

  • what an incredible musician!!!

  • 最高だよメセニー I was able to show spirit Thank you , from JAPAN

  • thanks alot, pat !

  • Genius!

  • something is beyond technical approach here,

sure one could all the tricks, lichs there are,

but somehow, few ones could keep its simple ,''yet'' beautiful as pat metheny has done here

for me as musician myself, its very hard to go beyond technical walls, that we all seems to stick at all times, and simply putting mind and soul on beauty of melodies and sound ,and still not losing touch of technic all together

Its easy to put on technic ,not easy to put on what metheny has shown us

  • There's a big difference between someone who copy a song, and someone who cover a song, plenty people out there are copying songs slamming guitars, loudness tricks, tapping tricks.

Pat Metheny as we see, did a cover just as genius and simple as it looks, great performance.

His nylon guitar, of couse he did some changes but nothing abnormal, any musician can see it! Somehow it sound beautifully warm!

    Long live to Metheny!

  • @TheJeffGoncalves This isn't a nylon guitar

  • Beautiful Music. ;o)

  • yeah man, beautiful

  • OH MY GOD OH MY GOD PAT METHENYYYYY!!!!! GAAAAA!!!!!!! HE'S SOOO AWEESSOMMMEEEEE!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAA!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FREEEKINGGGG LOOVVEEE YOU PATTT!!!! MMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY GODDDDDDDDD!!!! AH! KEY CHANGE!!!!! FREAKING GENIUSSS!!!!!!

  • The Master indeed!!

  • incredible

  • Pat is my God.

  • @GSEhooligan540 Guitar strings! :p

  • @jmvasquez ..................."Tuned B to B or A to A. The usual string gauges range between: plain 18, wound 24, 36, 46, 56, 70"

  • The man plays the guitar like it was a piano.

  • At the very end the host said it was improvisation,i don't think so.I think he must reharmonize the tune ahead of time, otherwise it would be a miracle!anyway, pat is unique, hardly copied.i wish i could play a song like that, haha!~

  • @yufengvai163 why can't it be improvisation? he is definitely capable of it!

  • fretless? sweet!

  • @McLeod54 not fretless <3

  • one person dosnt have fingers

  • This man is amazing...thats all there is to it

  • It's the third track from Pat's "One Quiet Night" album!

  • love the announcer: "some people can play; and some people can *play*."

  • looks like he´s taking a shit, but obv beautiful (the sound, not the might-havetaken-shit)

  • the word "genius" is overused in our age; too often used lightly, or without consideration of its truest meaning. pat metheny is one of the few who truly deserve the accolade.

  • @pngilman and Micheal Larsen

  • @pngilman so cheese... but yes I agree

  • paradiso per le mie orecchie *.*

  • I saw him this year at the Keswick in PA for his Orchestrion tour and just sat, jaw agape, when he performed on his 42 string Pikasso guitar. The man just oozes raw talent!!!

  • he is not only a master of the guitar, a musical master indeed... the guitar is just his voice

  • what's the tuning?baritone B tuning? thx

  • 1:45 The proof that, after all, Pat is human too ! lol

  • One of my favorite performances ever!

Also comforting for a musician to know that even the very best lose their timing sometimes :57

  • The only thing I don't like about Pat Metheney are his grimaces during he plays.

  • Somebody help me, I need this score to play in my recital... please help

  • @malaleche191 your gunna need a baritone first :P

  • Comment removed

  • God.

  • ho la pelle d'oca!

  • stupid black cunts

  • By the time the key change comes in, he has just demonstrated [yet again], his mesmerising talent. J Holland - why not have him on again?

  • I can play better with my toes! :)

  • Fucking cool... Amazing! Who is this guy man?!

  • @hafizmagician

    hahahah!!!

    Who is this guy man?!

    really you don't know him????

    are you joking???

  • great sound!

  • Got goosebumps the first time I heard this!

  • so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful. Anybody know how he's got the guitar tuned?

  • Yes: I just found the interview I was talking about earlier. The guitar is tuned a fifth below standard (A,D,G,C,E,A low to high) and the middle two strings (G and C) up an octave with normal guitar gauges. He calls it "half Nashville" tuning.

  • Thanks! Interesting, so it's not some sort of open tuning then.

  • what a wonderful musician...

  • Didn't Pat just sit down and basically record the One Quiet Night album literally in one night or something to that effect? I think Pat's one of those players who doesn't know where his lines come from in a theoretical sense but he can just play them!

  • @bingefeller No offense, but I think you're wrong. He's a really educated guy--musically and otherwise.

  • I feel the opposite. I think he could tell you every last thing he's doing melodically, rhythmically and harmonically. Dude is a ridiculous musician.

  • @bingefeller I do think that Pat was one of those guys who could just "do it" like Wes Montgomery and Jaco Pastorius' Famous ears, Pat probably had something like that. Making his first record which is MIND BLOWING at 18 (or 19?)

But on the other end I think Pat Metheny knows the theory behind EVERY thing he plays, just like Wes and Jaco had incredible ears but when they got to the top they went back and learned how to read music and all.

  • @xdazednconfusdx he was 21 when he recorded bright size life, though he'd been working on the album's material for years before recording it. As for his theoretical knowledge, totally agree, if you see vids of his seminars and masterclasses, he can explain whatever he's playing, and has some ridiculous technical, verging on classical, exercises.

  • @xdazednconfusdx

Pat was 21 when Bright Size Life was recorded :)

    Awesome album!

  • @bingefeller I'm pretty sure that you're wrong here, He was the youngest music professor ever at Berklee i believe when he was 18.

  • The Manzer website says this about their Baritone guitar:

    "Tuned B to B or A to A. The usual string gauges range between: plain 18, wound 24, 36, 46, 56, 70"

  • Yes.....

Some people can play and some people can play...

    Pat Metheny can play!!

    (So can Jools Holland!)

  • bravo!

  • He's playing a baritone guitar, so the gauges should be around .068 to .072. You can buy baritone gauges strings. I read in an interview, that he's playing some weird semi-nashville tuning for this piece. I think the 3rd and 4th strings are normal guitar strings and the rest are baritone strings, but I couldn't tell you what the exact tuning is.

  • This whole piece is great...well it's Pat, but I especially like where he takes it at 1:59. Well done Mr. Metheny.

  • I totally agree Tomiah ! That was an amazing trip! Thanks for the guidance ;)

  • @tomiah2b yes, it's definitely an amazing moment!

  • beautiful

  • Who is that guy? Not metheny, the host. Love this video

  • Jools Holland. The show is called Later...with Jools Holland. He always has good music

  • Joolz Holland. He was the keyboardist for the band Squeeze.

  • "Some people can play and some people can PLAY"

    Astounding

  • A master at work.

  • Yeah!

  • This deserves more views!

  • !!!Wonderful!!

  • OMG! OMG! OMG!....oh yeah...uhm...OMG!!!!
