Actually MDA doesn't usually buy those wheelchairs for us. Our insurance does. MDA has a limit on what they provide for equipment and powerchairs don't fit in that budget. My family donated for years, too and I served as the poster child/goodwill ambassador for 4 years. MDA has gone downhill a lot cutting programs, especially those for adults.
It's really sad you have to say such cruel hateful things to someone you know nothing about.
Why do you assume she has MD? Or that she needed charity to pay for her wheechair?
And why do you insult her regarding her appearance? Do strong, intelligent women frighten you?
She has a right to her opinion, and so do I, and so do you. Should we think that you should be arrested for having an opinion?
The criticisms of Mr. Lewis are not about the money he's raised, which is considerable. The protest is over the images he presents of disabled persons as something to be pitied.
Forgive me for assuming. I just think she can channel her energy into a more positive thing like helping others in need. Start her own charity. Does having a campain against one man and turning away people who contribute, feel strongly and get educated make her feel superior? It takes away from the ones who are helped and have hope. It's selfish to have an agenda that takes away from even one person.
Rather than working for equality and for the social inclusion of disabled people, the Telethon portrays us as hopeless, pathetic, eternal children. Lewis has said,
"My kids cannot go into the workplace. There's nothing they can do."
Why should she start a charity? Why not start a business? That would be infinitely better.
If you really care about persons who live with disAbility, you might consider supporting the federal legislation known as "Community Choice Act," or your local CIL
" . . . channel her energy into a more positive thing, like helping others in need."
She is helping others in need. Hear her speaking truth to power? I don't know her, but I'd bet her job duties include advocacy. Maybe she's a self-advocate.
"It's selfish to have an agenda that takes away from even one person."
Exploitation of the disabled is MDA's media strategy. Their agenda serves a very small group but takes away from EVERYONE. That is selfish.
Thanks Dominick!
