So *this* is the hymn that they were singing on the movie *Titanic* when they were singing at the church service they had. I always wanted to know what song that was. Thanks for posting this!
I agree, what a beautiful hymn. I spent 10 years in the Navy starting out as an E-1 and rising to O-3. I loved every single minute of my Navy experience and especially the Sunday mornings that I spent in Navy chapels. This wonderful hymn was played/sung each and every Sunday.
This beautiful short hymn brings tears to these seventy year old eyes. Although I never served in the Navy-it sends a chill down my spine, I lost two brothers -in-law recently and they were both Navy vets of the Korean war> RIP Leonard and Ken!
@Aenglaland if it weren't for america, then britain wouldn't have had it's best pilots of the RAF during Operation Sea Lion, the Eagle Squadrons were the best squadrons of the Battle of Britain, and they were completely American
@lgmmrm Actually american pilots were very few in the Battle of Britain (not Operation Sea Lion, air attack was only part of that plan and it was German). At that time America was still strictly neutral until dec 1941 of course, this leading to a lot of pilots saying they were not american. As well as this, and more importantly, American pilots had had no real long experience of fighting, i would have to argue that British and Polish pilots during the battle of Britain were superior.
@Aenglaland its not very out landish at all, Japan operated submarines in the Atlantic, and spanned the largest ocean in the world... with their dreams of global domination, surely sailing to the english channel isnt too hard in comparison
@TheAow4321 During WW2 Japan designed and operated long distance subs, but did not 'span' the largest oceans as they did not perform well in operations and were very limited to what the could actually do. Japan didn't 'dream' of world domination, their first minister General Tojo was an imperialist expansionist, but there plans were only to invade Manchuria for its heavy industry, as well expand into other parts of Asia. On the contrary, sailing to the Eng. Channel would have been very hard.

Hello, you have a photo of my uncle Jesse Lamere and his friend in your slide show for the Navy Hymn. My cousin was so suprised to see it! Do you know her father?
My father, World War Two hero in the British Royal Navy, who died young (48 years old) because of what happened to him in the war, loved the Americans, and particularly the US Navy. He also loved this hymn.
@Aenglaland sorry to but in but another thing to consider would be not only a german invasion, but a Japanese invasion as well. If the United States wasnt there to handle em... Japan would surely wreak havoc on the Allies as well.
@Aenglaland IF IT WASN'T FOR THE AMERICANS IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED YOU IDIOT...the Japanese air force is to say that it wouldn't have happened again...you know...the airforce that was jamming it's planes into AMERICAN warships...
@Aenglaland and second of all, in a supposed attack by the Germans and their allies, the defenses that you're talking about are incomparably small to the defenses that the Germans had all across the French coastline and the number of German troops attacking would have been much larger then the number of troops that attacked on D Day...now you go and put 2 and 2 together
@Aenglaland I believe you're not familiar with the word hypothesis. The historians that you talk about count in the fact that America has entered the war. Hypothetically speaking if the Americans haven't entered the war, the Germans with THEIR ALLIES could have overrun Britain despite Commonwealth. It is a fact that Australia would have been lost if it wasn't for the U.S. Marines so there goes one of your major allies.
@Aenglaland with Japan and Italy on the German side, the British would have never won the war...Germany's forces we're rising in numbers and eventually they would have attacked Britain, that's why Hitler left the troops that we're supposed to invade Britain in a state of readiness for over 2 years. With all the commonwealth countries Britain could never survive such an invasion without the U.S. and most of Europe would be a hell hole (including the U.K.) if the Americans didn't enter the war
@Aenglaland you do realize that the "yanks" outnumbered you if you count in the marines...and that the germans combined with the italians and the japanese could have run over britain in a blitzkrieg...the krauts had allies too you know and without the americans their allies would have over run your comonwealth countries like australia and canada..if the japanesewerent fighting the americans you raf would have gotten raped by japanese zeros
@Aenglaland a naval blockade ??????are you serious?? yo do realize that if Germany can drop 3 armies of paratroopers on British mainland then it can also airdrop the supplies for it...
@Aenglaland the "Commonwealth Contingent" consisted of 83,115 troops
61,715 British, the rest Canadian...since 61,715 British troops couldn't stop 3 German ARMIES do you really think that with the additional 21,400 Canadians would have made a difference ?? Cannon fodder?? Since when does Cannon fodder lead the largest invasion in human history and then breaks the back of the enemy in the Battle of the Bulge ???
@Aenglaland of course it never happened...it got stopped by the Americans and the Russians...the 3 armies that Hitler had prepared we're numerically more then enough to run Britain in the ground and the Navy can't do jack shit against paratroopers...fact is that the U.K. was at war and was on the defensive until an American led invasion on D DAY
@Aenglaland the actual attempt of occupation never started...the plan was never put into full effect...the naval landing never even started...simply numerically speaking if they would have landed the U.K. would have never stood a chance...it was the American led invasion that pushed the Germans back and that removed the threat that the U.K. NEVER MANAGED TO REMOVE. Hitlers forces we're greater and rising...the British could have never pulled of D Day by them selves
@Aenglaland hte first attack he launched was an air attacke the second one never happened...o you're wrong again...the Americans led the operation which drove back the germans , the brittish led an failed operation that drove back the british...the americans saved your asses in WW2 just like in WW1...there's no chance in hell you would have won the war by your self
@Aenglaland oh god youur patriotism is making you retarded...read again "After the London Blitz, Hitler turned his attention to the Soviet Union, and Seelöwe lapsed, never to be resumed. However, not until 13 February 1942, after the invasion of Russia, were forces earmarked for the operation released to other duties"
@Aenglaland "After the London Blitz, Hitler turned his attention to the Soviet Union, and Seelöwe lapsed, never to be resumed. However, not until 13 February 1942, after the invasion of Russia, were forces earmarked for the operation released to other duties" meaning that even uncle Adolf had doubts about abandoning the plans for invasion of Britain
@Aenglaland it doesn't Matter how Hitler felt...in the first days of Barbarossa Stalin ordered his troops to do nothing cause he felt that Hitler would never brake their deal of not attacking each other...you think they followed his orders ?? Germany had the numbers to invade and possibly win and unlike any country in europe it had experienced troops...Hitler just held the airforce to a much higher standard then it was
@Aenglaland yes he made that very clear with the Luftwaffe not attacking Britain...nope, no attack at all... of-course except for the Battle of Britain, that was just for show and tell, right ???
@Aenglaland until D Day, Germany was on the offensive and THAT my friend is a fact. What's also a fact is that U.K. didn't have the troops to fight of Germany and it's allies in case of a land invasion and another fact is that Germany was planing both the invasion of U.K. and the U.S.
That's also why the U.S. Government made the plan called "War Plan Orange" in case the U.K. get's over run and the U.S. gets attacked from Canada, a Commonwealth country...learn your history, kid
@Aenglaland if it would have been lost Hitler couldn't be able to do jack shit cause of the Brittish Navy. The campaign in Africa was nothing more then a battle for a piece of sand...it was just a brittish attempt to stall and wait for the americans to arive...El Alamein had not tactical purpose what so ever
@Aenglaland the only significan't Montay's plan was the failed plan of Market Garden and he was given the command of that plan specificly because he didn't get his ride on D DAY. And Brittain had it pretty easy of being kept free since it was never invaded by the germans...the Battle for brittain was an air battle
On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.
@Aenglaland no actually it was half half between U.S. troops and Commonwealth troops (commonwealth including canadians and the british). D Day was planed by Dwight D. Eisenhower, not the brits. And until D Day the Germans we're constantly on the offensive and have already made plans for invading the U.K. and the U.S.
in other words, you have managed to get EVERYTHING wrong
@Aenglaland proven wrong?? if it wasn't for the U.S. right now you would be eating sauerkraut...it was the French and Brittish failure to stop Hitler from Anexxing countrys and building up his army that even led to the second world war you fucking moron...it was D Day that turned the tide...the only thing the brits ever did was run a failed operation named Market Garden...you have zero fucking knowledge about history what so ever...it was the americans and the russians that won the war
This hymn is considered one of the most enduring compositions; used throughout the world as the Navy hymn in many countries, and sung regularly enough to be appreciated through generations of seafarers. As an organist and a bandsman (tuba) I never tire of playing it, and always feel strong emotion when doing so, hearing the words sung.
The sea is quite a special place and it also makes one more humane in war then one otherwise would.Because in the end you are just this human floating on a very hostile and dangerous ocean and people recognise it by instict and feel connected with other souls out there even if it's your enemy in war.The sea will swallow anyone if it wants too.
this is such a good song... i recognize it from Titanic and The Perfect Storm... I'm writing a story about an angel protecting soldiers on the sea... and i need this song to help me write, it's so good
@ItsHooplaProductions Having an angel protect men at sea is not in accordance with this song. It is singing about God the Father saving men at sea not an angel.
How can we forget your noble sacrifice for the freedom of your brothers and sisters and even the strangers in the corners of the globe...
God Bless America and all you countless heroes.... There is a song called " nameless Heroes by Miyeh" specially written for the American soldiers and veterans at youtube video section.
If there's one navy in the world that I respect then it's the U.S. Navy. No other navy in the world has more aircraft then most countrys. Rest In Peace to all brave men like the Medal of Honor recipient Chief Watertender Petar Tonić and greetings from Croatia to who ever made this video!
I'm from an old Royal Navy family. My dad was a war hero, & survived with a very few men the sinking of his ship en route to Murmansk in WW2. He loved the US Navy, & went to the Antarctic with your Vice Admiral Evelyn Byrd before the war. He also loved the music! Please see my video.
I'm from an old Royal Navy family. This hymn, beautifully sung here, is the most evocative, beautiful & haunting sound I know. I remember my poor Dad singing it in the Tanganyika, before he succumbed to malaria when I was five. He wasn't strong enough to survive the illness, due to injuries in the winter of 1942, when his Royal Navy Corvette was sunk by the Luftwaffe in the North Sea. He & seven others survived from a crew of 68. It caught up with him in Tanganyika. Pictures on my video.
Lots of real life heroes in that clip !!!... Admiral William F. Halsey Jr., Adm.Chester Nimitz, JFK,,etc etc.
"Bull" Halsey earned his flying wings at age 52..I still find that amazing. He is one of my favorite heroes ever and the movie "The Gallant Hours" is a first rate portrayal of this "hard as nails" sailor/warrior..
Salieri325, this response is to you. Get out your World History book, because you obviously miss the point. Do you not understand that The United States of America is, for lack of a better word, an anomaly? You should hang your head in shame for that which you posted below. What evidence do you need to understand that this world is not filled with good, warm and fuzzy folk who wish us well. I think MY GOD above that we still lead this globe and have people, unlike you, who die for this country.
@atl2kaj Are you mentally retarded or do you actually think self-assertion is a logical for of argumentation? What in the name of all things green does my comment have to do with America and your pointlessly stupid (and just as redundant as that phrase) comment about America being an "anomaly?" So because you say the world is filled with "evil" people, that means it is? I suppose you've taken an evil census? And you actually think that you have a God? You actually think?
@atl2kaj So let me get this straight? You just said that America is an anomaly, and yet now you’re claiming some satisfaction in seeing people die for America… which to you is an “anomaly.” Aside from that word making no sense in the context of your stupid remark, why would you derive pleasure from seeing people die for you over no apparent cause?
@atl2kaj Let me ask you this dip shit… Would you walk up to someone on the street who was having a conversation you didn’t like and say to them; “I disagree with what you’re saying, now I’m going to kill you?” No, unless you were absolutely retarded. Similarly would the leaders of two opposing countries duel one another one on one if they had a disagreement? No, of course not. They would much rather use morons like you and sit behind their desks while laughing at your stupidity.
@atl2kaj So while they are off dying for “this country,” who is fighting for their freedom at home? Do they have any freedom if they are sent to slaughter by their own will for another whose care is not for them? Let me answer that for you, NO!
@atl2kaj Hmmm…. There is a way to kill off the entire human species… It’s called Nuclear War. So why would humans ever seek to create that which could destroy them entirely? Oh, I know why. Morons like you think it necessary to kill other humans without realizing their own vulnerability as insignificant specs of existence floating through space… Do us all a favor and jump off a bridge, rid the world of one less moronic ass hole.
Barack Obama has sworn to pull the plug out off the U.S.A., and he will do so. The world will become ONE, and there is no place for a schoolyard bully like Uncle Sam anymore.
This video has only verse of this wonderful hymn. A subsequent verse is dedicated to other armed forces. When I was growing up, we always sang this hymn at my church when a manned space mission was launched.
Such a powerful hymn for those who make the sea their home. Written by the English clergyman William Whiting IN 1860 it resonates all around the english-speaking, sea-faring world even to this day. I salute all those brave seamen who have died to save the western world.
This song has been ENGRAVED into my very being sing November 1963 when President Kennedy was assasinated. I will NEVER forget the 25th of November when we watched the funeral coverage all day. I finally got the name of this song via YAHOO ANSWERS because they used
it in TITANIC....and I have heard it a few times since 1963...and it was just like reliving all of it over again.........
We must pray for our country and our service men and women (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines)! If there was ever a time when America needed God, its now!
Those poor people were sacrificed in order to gain public approval to enter the war. The Japanese could not have 'sneaked up' on the U.S. They let thsoe people die on 9/11 for exactly the same reason. And the people don't see ...
I disagree. While the government certainly capitalized on 9/11, to pin the blame on them is a little outlandish. The same with Pearl Harbor. Japan attacked out of the fear that our military build-up in the Pacific was a sign that we were preparing to declare war... which was very possible. They decided to strike first, and cripple us. It was actually a very sound strategic move. However, they underestimated the fighting prowess and determination of American troops, especially the U.S. Marines.
I agree. Also when I hear "Hail to the Chief" I think of JFK"s funeral. Those two songs will always remind me of JFK"s funeral. I think they played them when the casket was being brought down the steps if I'm not mistaken?
The original hymn was written by William Whiting of Winchester, England, in 1860. It was originally intended as a poem for a student of his, who was about to travel to the United States. In 1861, John B. Dykes, an Anglican clergyman, composed the tune "Melita" for this hymn. "Melita" is an archaic term for Malta, an ancient seafaring nation and the site of a shipwreck involving the Apostle Paul mentioned in Acts of the Apostles (chapters 27-28)
A very moving song. I first heard it while attending Navy bootcamp (GL) as I sang with the "Bue Jacket Choir" at a funeral. As a Navy vet & CG retiree I want this played and sung at my funeral.
A song being sung to God in a PRAYER; sung by Naval choir members paid by American taxpayers. Ya wonder where the ACLU is sometimes. They will be NO MORE if they try to destroy this hymn!
Naval aviators wear wings of gold, Air force pilots....look like lead color, thats why they get 8000 ft runways and navy gets 140 ft.,.....and af unforms look like bus drivers....still love ya'll tho.Best reguards.
Thru all the years and trials and celebrations, thanks to all who have "gone to sea" for this wonderful country. May we never forget the sacrifices, the obedience to duty, and the feeling of honor to be among the Blue and Gold.
I was part of the group of various servicemen that sang this on the helicopter deck of the ' Rangatira' in 1982 for 'Songs of Praise from the Falklands', due to be broadcast at Christmas that year. .When it was shown my parents apparently sat glued to their T.V. for the whole show. Finally, as the credits started to rise, the music started to play and our godawful voices filled their living room and they saw me at the back of the impromptu choir. Their video didn't record so I've never seen it.
This is a beautiful hymn. There are many versions: piano, orchestral etc but the one I am looking for is by a church choir with an organ accompaniment (preferably chapel. Other renditions do not do justice to the sentiments behind this hymn which is a prayer to the almighty to protect the sailors from the dangers they meet when they sail from our shores. I remember we sang it during that terrible Falkland's War which took so many lives. This version is too short but inspiring nevertheless.
I don't know if any of you saw The HBO Movie Taking Chance They should have used this in the funeral sequence and in the tribute to Lance Corporal Phelps at the end.
Almighty ruler of the all Whose power extends to great and small, Who guides the stars with steadfast law, Whose least creation fills with awe— Oh grant Thy mercy and Thy grace To those who venture into space.
I think the first class cabin folks sang this (not this in-tune) during the worship service about midway through the movie "Titanic". Also was heard in the postlogue/memorial service in movie "The Perfect Storm" and I think in the submarine movie starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman-- "Crimson Tide", in the first part of the film, just as the sub slipped beneath the surface...
Yes, it was the song they song that morning in church the day the ship went down. Kinda creepy isn't it? The last line was: "For those in peril on the sea."
canadianreserve, and wagneraster, too bad you are both asses!Wagner, I noticed you said probably. Hedging your bets, aren't you??? Not to sure? You have a problem, my friend. Think about it, if you can think. That's what you can do with your mind. Oh, that's the thing between your ears. Contrary to popular belief, it has a purpose. God gave it to us, but it is up to us to use it. Unfortunately, I see that you choose not to. So, why should we not go to space??? =Stefan=
I've always loved this hymn. My uncle, who was a naval aviator in WWII and Korea (called back to service) once mentioned that he wanted this hymn to be played at his funeral. Fortunately, that will surely be a while out, because he is in excellent health. But I will make sure his daughters know, if they aren't aware already, of his wishes.
let me say this to you thank you for all you have done for this country people like you who have served in the Navy are my inspiration for when i join the Navy in a year so once more thank you
Years from now when they put the cold dirt over me and after the rifle salute is finished and taps is played, may this hymn be sung for it is always my favorite.
The white hat has long been put away, the dress blues would not fit if they were still around, and the brass buckle tarnished long ago, but my back gets rigid and my eyes moist when I here The Hymn. May God protect all of our men and women in all branches of our armed forces as they put their all on the line for our freedom and safety. Sleep well tonight America, our troops are at their post!
So, I know the navy has a chorsu but, do the marines have one as well?

@Aenglaland until D Day, Germany was on the offensive and THAT my friend is a fact. What's also a fact is that U.K. didn't have the troops to fight of Germany and it's allies in case of a land invasion and another fact is that Germany was planing both the invasion of U.K. and the U.S.
That's also why the U.S. Government made the plan called "War Plan Orange" in case the U.K. get's over run and the U.S. gets attacked from Canada, a Commonwealth country...learn your history, kid
anteracmacash 8 months ago
@Aenglaland if it would have been lost Hitler couldn't be able to do jack shit cause of the Brittish Navy. The campaign in Africa was nothing more then a battle for a piece of sand...it was just a brittish attempt to stall and wait for the americans to arive...El Alamein had not tactical purpose what so ever
anteracmacash 8 months ago
@Aenglaland the only significan't Montay's plan was the failed plan of Market Garden and he was given the command of that plan specificly because he didn't get his ride on D DAY. And Brittain had it pretty easy of being kept free since it was never invaded by the germans...the Battle for brittain was an air battle
anteracmacash 8 months ago
@Aenglaland hje're are the specific numbers:
On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.
anteracmacash 8 months ago

I think MY GOD above that we still lead this globe and have people, unlike you, who die for this country.
atl2kaj 1 year ago

Salieri325 1 year ago
@atl2kaj Let me ask you this dip shit… Would you walk up to someone on the street who was having a conversation you didn’t like and say to them; “I disagree with what you’re saying, now I’m going to kill you?” No, unless you were absolutely retarded. Similarly would the leaders of two opposing countries duel one another one on one if they had a disagreement? No, of course not. They would much rather use morons like you and sit behind their desks while laughing at your stupidity.
Salieri325 1 year ago
@atl2kaj So while they are off dying for “this country,” who is fighting for their freedom at home? Do they have any freedom if they are sent to slaughter by their own will for another whose care is not for them? Let me answer that for you, NO!
Salieri325 1 year ago
@atl2kaj Hmmm…. There is a way to kill off the entire human species… It’s called Nuclear War. So why would humans ever seek to create that which could destroy them entirely? Oh, I know why. Morons like you think it necessary to kill other humans without realizing their own vulnerability as insignificant specs of existence floating through space… Do us all a favor and jump off a bridge, rid the world of one less moronic ass hole.

Those poor people were sacrificed in order to gain public approval to enter the war. The Japanese could not have 'sneaked up' on the U.S. They let thsoe people die on 9/11 for exactly the same reason. And the people don't see ...
Nautilus1972 1 year ago
Marines.
