It is because of those WEGA backlight lamps failing prematurely that prompted Sony to discontinue those lines of products. The Trinitron CRT type TVs are still among the best standard-definition TV's you can get today. My family had one from 1993 up until it was accidentally dropped and smashed in 2007.
To show you how shitty this t.v. is my brother just gave his to me since it has a yellow blob and colors are weak and poor overall quality. I have had it about a week and if I didn't have the burden of paying my ex-wife 30% of my pay I would surely give this piece of crap a similar fate as yours. Sony USED TO BE GREAT as I have a few stereo pieces that still rock after all these years but my last 2 experiences inforce the fact that I will NEVER buy a Sony product again.
i talked to a local business today. they are selling me a lamp for $100. sony wanted $200. the guy said that they are getting sued for selling tv's that were meant to break. i dont remember all the details though but dont break your tvs just yet. there may hopefully be a recall or a credit for a new one or a smaller class. i asked sony if i could give them my worn lamp 48" and they could give me a brand new 36". fair trade right? im being really generous there right? they said. i hate sony.
My 42 inch sony grand wega had optical block failure and a melted bulb door. after a month of dicking around back and forth and refusing their offers sony sent me a refurbished 46 inch 1080p lcd flatscreen.

Mine also 2 yearold $4 grand! and it's a lemon. SONY will not stand behind their products!
