Yes 2002, ABC, when it took the NBA away from NBC, didn't exactly inherit a great situation. Remember the aforementioned Jayson Williams and Pat Croce? The only thing that saved NBA and NBC from being a total whimper at the end was when Jayson Williams was arrested and Pat Croce and Mike Fratello were dropped from the network studio because of that and Tom Tolbert fell into its lap. Tom Tolbert did a nice job at the studio before he was ABC's first broadcasting team when ABC took over.

Before you say anything bad about ABC's coverage of the NBA, consider that coverage of the NBA was slipping long before ESPN/ABC took over the coverage. Remember Pat Croce and Jayson Williams during the last year of the NBA on NBC.

John Saunders, who was ABC's College Football Host and former voice of the Toronto Raptors from 1995-2001 should have been the #1 guy with Bill Walton. I don't think that Brad Nessler prior to 2002 has ever done an NBA game in his life. I feel sorry for him because he had to fill Marv Albert's shoes. But, no matter who ABC/ESPN gets, as long as TNT has Marv and Charles, it's a no-win situation. I don't think Erin Andrews could save ABC/ESPN's NBA coverage.
