There are evolutionary reasons for our predisposition to religious beliefs. I think more than anything; it began simply as a false belief system. One that we haven't been able to let go.

i have an open question for people - i have become a full blown atheist in the last year (heading toward this for years of course) and i am so happy - joyous- carefree- a spark in my stride - now i was never a very religious person to begin with so i wasn't weighed down with a lot of guilts,etc - but the joy i feel at being an atheist is amazing- has anyone else had this experience?

The main reason that christians HAVE to deny evolution is because it had to take billion of years and that it was a process to get to human, which differs from the creation story in the bible which clearly states that humans were simply created as is in gods image around 6000 years ago. The difference with Christianity is that it is prophetic and those prophecies are all fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. One thing I think the hosts missed is that humans have thought that gods punished them (us) for misdeeds centuries before Christianity. Back then, humans would typically sacrifice an animal (and in some cases, other humans) to satisfy their god(s). Christianity is really only different than those beliefs in two ways: 1. Jesus presents the "ultimate" sacrifice, so that one only needs to believe in him (makes life easier) and 2. anyone is welcome to believe (no longer exclusive).
I think the answer lies in the evolution of religion. Religion is an explanation for bad things happening, in a nutshell. Why do these awful things happen? Oh, I know, we must have done something bad. We must be bad people....

i have an open question for people - i have become a full blown atheist in the last year (heading toward this for years of course) and i am so happy - joyous- carefree- a spark in my stride - now i was never a very religious person to begin with so i wasn't weighed down with a lot of guilts,etc - but the joy i feel at being an atheist is amazing- has anyone else had this experience?

And, since Christianity began in the 1st century ACE, anyone who was not a Jew was a Pagan, and in either case everyone has a lineage which at some point did not practice Christianity. The main reason that christians HAVE to deny evolution is because it had to take billion of years and that it was a process to get to human, which differs from the creation story in the bible which clearly states that humans were simply created as is in gods image around 6000 years ago. If evolution is true, it essentially disproves their god, thats why they have no choice but to deny it.

The difference with Christianity is that it is prophetic and those prophecies are all fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. @Tarn1968 No you have this wrong. Hell exists because it is the place where God isn't. God only wants for all to be with him. Evil wants the opposite of this. It is each person's choice (that's called free-choice). Hell is absence from God. The fallen angels fell by their own choosing, hence why they are no longer in heaven.

One thing I think the hosts missed is that humans have thought that gods punished them (us) for misdeeds centuries before Christianity. Back then, humans would typically sacrifice an animal (and in some cases, other humans) to satisfy their god(s). Christianity is really only different than those beliefs in two ways: 1. Jesus presents the "ultimate" sacrifice, so that one only needs to believe in him (makes life easier) and 2. anyone is welcome to believe (no longer exclusive).

2. Build the subject back up by offering a way to fix their flaw (jesus), a reward when their flaw is fixed(heaven) and a sense of community and fellowship (church).
