the sheriff slept walked into the forest, and was missing until the end when robin gets him back to the castle to stop the town being burned down.

Because he knew Robin is a good tracker and will be able to find the sheriff, if the sheriff dies from unnatural causes or goes missing then Prince John would have sent an army to torch Nottingham
