  • Dude...i've been effing w/ Ableton for a year....and I did not know I could even do this in

    Ableton.

    Wow.

    Thanks!! :D

  • @fifedawg1906 Oh man, what till I launch my next site in April. I will show way better stuff that this!

  • 5 STARS BRO

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a long time now.

  • Also browser not best for auditioning sounds.

What wuld be dope is for drum rack cell copy and paste and simpler time strech.

?. If I use preset but then drag drop manually onto cell will the new cell have same macro preset as if auto sliced?

  • @TheRebelEvolutionary Currently, Macros have to be from a preset, or set manually for samples you drag in.

  • My problem w/ rack is that I can only auto slice once per track. I want to be able to EASILY combine multiple sliced samples in one rack. Also swapping out drum sounds could be easier.

Secondly, the timestrch beast that it is, time strchg per chop should be possible. Only wrkaround seems to be impulse inside of a rack cell.

  • @TheRebelEvolutionary For starters (if you're new to ableton), you should play with the devices in drumrack. You can swap out multiple sliced samples. For preserving time stretch, you can freeze and flatten more simply than its instructed in Ableton's built in tutorial. You can "drag-copy" a frozen clip to an audio track. Then that sample can be dragged into drumrack.

  • Thanks so much for posting this video. It was very helpful. I created a video that puts your technique for chopping samples into use.

  • @locnesbeats I'm glad producers are finding it useful for their music.

  • This is so awesome. thank you.

  • nice video man.. good look, Im using an MPK mini, I can hear samples when I play, but after I recorded, it shows the notes in the track view, but I cannot hear the sound, can u help me out?.

  • @ufinn Check your volume macro if you created one

  • THANKS!!

  • Never mind solved it again, thanks alot doe! :)

  • My simpler plugin overlaps the drum rack.. help? :l

  • @sickoe93 I don't understand. Have a screenshot?

  • @JBlongz never mind solved it, but on another note, how can i assign the chops to my midi controller?

  • I've been trying to use my keyboard for the chops but I've noticed that only a few keys will trigger my chops while all of the other, maybe 30 sample chops aren't triggered by the keyboard. Is it possible to remap my keyboard in Ableton so that the keys I choose will trigger the chops? I cannot figure out how to work the other chops with my keyboard. Thanks so much for this tutorial its very descriptive and helpful.

  • hey I just got one question..

do you absolutely need a keyboard to make this work? could I not just use that drawing mode thing in the program to decide which chopped part I'd like to use?

  • @thorbergurk Not exactly sure what you're asking, but you can put your computer keyboard in midi mode and trigger the samples. A keyboard controller is not necessary.

  • @thorbergurk No you don't need a keyboard controller.

  • Thx for the upload!

I've done everything you did, butt for some reason I can't here anything, when i play the different MIDI-sounds on my keybord.

I can see, that Ableton acknowledge the fact that I'm pressing the different key notes, but still there comes no sound.

Can you or anyone else help me in this matter??

  • @Eventualitet Double-check your volume macro (you created one). I found that most people forget that the default volume macro is set to -36db. Make sure you turn it up to zero, then save your preset again. Also check your sample length macro if you set one.

  • thanks for the video

  • i've been choppin shit like a damn sushi chef since i watched this video!

thnx alot! its so easy now :))

  • @MCMLXXX111 I'm glad to help you take it to the next level.

  • Thank you man, great stuff, regards from peru :)

  • Thanks alot Mr Blongz, Appreciate your help!!

  • @190light any time

  • @JBlongz ,Actually man I tried increasing the tempo right now, ableton still plays the original tempo of the track im tryna sample. Can u kindly explain step by step how I can accomplish increasing the tempo please?

  • @190light Not the tempo of the session, but the tempo in the sample box of clip view. Be sure that warp is also enabled in that view as well. The tempo box under the warp botton will allow you to change the sample's playback tempo.

  • awesome! , im doing well so far, Just need to know how I can increase the tempo of the sample I`d like to use. Do I adjust the "transpose" knob? How can I select a suitable tempo before actually slicing the sample to a new midi track

  • @190light You don't have to transpose. Just play with the warp section of clip view. Each clip has its own individual settings. There is a tempo box you can adjust there.

  • do i need to have an mpc?

  • @190light no you don't

  • excellent vid. thnx much!

  • Where can you get samples?

  • @Eatsleepkick100 Vinyls my friend, go to record stores, check craigslist for people throwing away vinyls, ebay has some good deals, the more obscure/rare the sample, the better.

  • great tutorial, THANKS

  • Thank you.

  • @PinchHitterMuzik Leave out the step where I set the macros for the preset. What I do in the video is set all pads to the same (which is how it works best). For individual pads, you should set macros AFTER the preset is loaded.

  • u bright my day mister, thanx. Was searching for a quick way to choke group, and not 128 times for all kits ;)

  • @electrickattle I live to help bro.

  • :/ ????? all my slices are from one entire sample but chopped up in sections, what am i doing wrong? i followed everything

  • @DJMinorCUT92 That's how Ableton live work. It's non-destructive, which means it never alters the actual sample. If you want the samples literally split in separate files, just split them in arrangement mode. The latter would only be done if you want to use it in a or 3rd party program.

  • Thanks for this tut, great help !

    I just wonder, and it would be huge help if you knew ;

Once your samples are chopped, is it possible to export them individualy to get as many .wav as there is chopped samples ? To use ableton as a sort of "advanced very easy chopper" for the MPC then..

Please if you got any idea.

  • @Joflouside I have not found a way to do that. Ableton's Chop function simply sets multiple markers on within the sameple to start playing from. Sine Ableton live warps your sample to tempo, you can drag the sample file into arrangement view and pull it apart there using the grid. Zoom in for more precise selection. When done, you can drag each sample to a drumrack pad.

  • @JBlongz Ok, I will try that. Thanks for the answer !

And for the preset, using it a lot.

  • Great Tutorial ! Thanks

  • I'm fighting to figure out how you can use all your samples on a pad controller like MPD18 or M-Audio Trigger Finger and not just the number available on your pad, let's say 16. does anyone know how to do it?

  • awesome one man, I will get a lot of use out of this!

  • great vid son

  • thank you man! it was a really useful help! peace

  • Thanks for this man. It was a greeat, clean and easy to follow tutorial. I got stuck having trouble finding the map feature, but quickly found it through your video.

  • When I try to slice a song, it tells me that 'the slicing preset is invalid or has been deleted.'

    :(

  • TO EVERYONE THAT'S CONFUSED, ABOUT THE VOLUME, IT TOOK ME LIKE 5 MINS TO FIGURE OUT AND I WAS PISSED, BUT IN THE VID WHEN HE SAYS SET THE MACROS TO ZERO, TYPE IN ZERO FOR THE CORRESPONDING MACROS. DON'T JUST TURN THE KNOBS ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM BECAUSE YOU WON'T GET SHIT OR IT'LL SOUND REALLY DUMB AND BAD. lol I can tell you the Macro numbers if you'd like. S.Start: 0.0, S.Length:100%, VeAttack:0.00ms,VeRelease:60.s, Transpose:0st,

    Detune:0ct,Spread:0%,Volume:0.00dB. YW

  • Awwesome tutorial man. Really helpful. My default folder didn't even have a Slicing folder in it so i created one and put the 'demo chop' preset in to it so the next time i went to slice to midi i was able to chose the demo chop preset. WOohooo! So much easier for chopping.

  • is it normal that when i hold down a key longer the chop gradually gets louder?

  • @alexanderXCII Not that I know of, check you macro or simpler settings. Did not have this problem. Depending on your settings, velocity may affect the output volume. As you familiarize your self with the setup process, you'll realize that much is possible when using macros to globally affect the playback.

  • why cant i hear the sample? I did everything right

  • @DJbrandino94 Check that youve normalized the volume macro if you created one. Im sure there is something you missed.

  • Thanks bro. Helps a lot

  • thank you for this video really helps. props to you peace

  • WTF its not working for me when i slice to midi no sound is plays when i hit the pads ! but it says sound is coming out but it isnt

  • @AudioCzar check your sound card

  • That was really useful - thanks!!

  • definitely an awesome tutorial! theres a few around to create the mpc style preset but the macro mappings are awesome!

  • after i go to Slice to new midi track the demo chop doesnt show up?. i did everything you did but its not there.

  • @JovanQ1111 Are you sure you put it in the proper folder? I did this successfully on both Mac and Windows. Try again and take your time with the steps.

  • but what if i want to manually chop the sample with warp markers, how can i upload it to simpler?

  • @JussDeff The FIRST option in the Slice menu is Warp Marker. Simpler is for single chop/sample (thus its name). The chopping in the video creates 1 Simpler per pad in DrumRack. Sampler is for multiple samples and may better suit your needs. In the second drop-down in the Slice menu, you can choose to slice those warp markers to a Sampler plugin. Explore the options and how they work, it will give you as much control as you need.

  • Awesome tutorial!

  • @danlar84 Glad I could help

  • Nice voice bro! sounds like a layd back ice t :D thx for tha advice..

  • so is there a way to get a visual on the sliced areas on the sample wav? And once you get the visual, if you can get it, can manually adjust each slicer visually on the waveform??

  • @Ibprius Absolutely! After it chops you have full control over each slice. For example, if your chop settings creates a drumrack, then double-click the cell you want to edit and its waveform appears as I show in the video where I created the macros. If you want a particular setting to be unique from the other slices, then DO NOT create a macro for it like I did in the video. Instead, just make your setting after the slices are created.

  • @JBlongz Thanks man, Literally 5 minutes after I posted the question I figured it out. The thing I'm even more stoked on is I can set slices overlapping surrounding slices without interfering or cutting them off. i couldn't quit figure out how to individually manipulate the samples with controllers because they appeared to be locked due to the drum pad mapping, but I'll figure it out. Thanks for all your help bro. Glad to see the hip hop community embrace change. Keep up the great work...

  • Took me i few minutes to realize i didnt have SAMPLE LENGTH turned up!!!!

nice tutorial!!!! my mpc is getting very close to becoming an ebay listing!!!!

  • @GregoryGraveyard Before you sell that MPC...for fun you should record the a 4 bar midi note repeat of your favorite MPC swings. Then right click the midi file in ableton and extract the groove. Now you'll have the MPC's exact feel for any session you want! Thats what I did with my MPC 4000.

  • @JBlongz i dont know anything about the midi note repeat?? is it in the manual?? can i just make a simple beat and extract its groove instead??

  • @GregoryGraveyard Yes. Note repeat is the technical term for roll on the mpc. Record those to a midi track.

  • you know that you're the best?

    big thx for this video

  • Thanks for tle help man. Now i just need recording... and simply make the song hehe :;)

  • Thanks man, you've helped me a lot. I appreciate it

  • nice job, easy to understand and easy to follow!

  • This is video is gold

    Big thanks from Spain.

  • Great video! Breaks everything down step by step. Thank You

  • lol why is he talking about sex?

    0:54 - and for the final 1:13

  • best video ever thank you

  • Dude! Good quality video. Very helpful. Thanks! :)

  • can you do this on an akai mpd18

  • @sharonstopit Absolutely

  • Thank you for this. I've been a dj for years and I'm glad cats like you help me let out my inner beast. My next battle win goes out to cats like you. Thank you.

  • @djcrumbz Thats what I'm here for. This is just the beginning

  • @djcrumbz Your welcome bro

  • Is there anyway i can sync my triggers because im not the best performer, when i hit one sample then hit the other it will sync up.

i have to do a one track live performance for tv on the 10th of feb, so if you could get back to me asap i would appreciate it, thaNKS

  • @ilovemusic0023 You can use record quantization if you be playing back the loops you perform. If you want your live playing to be quantized, I'd recommend using a controller with a note-repeat function or play around with the arpeggiator.

  • @ilovemusic0023 and another thing, the sample looses volume towards the end, the sustain and release is all the way up

  • I like your english

  • okay thank you.

  • hey man , do you think you can do an ableton live 8 and mpd 32 tutorial. im having a really hard time setting mine up :(

  • @jorelpri I no longer have an MPD, I use Maschine in controller mode to work with Live.

  • would you know of any vids that could teach me how to toggle through my mpd 32 along with ableton? when i try assigning misi to a specific know itll assign it to a different knob or fader?!?!

  • @jorelpri You can search youtube or the ableton forum. From what I remember, there was a template built in for Ableton Live Lite. Though the template is very limited, It was the closest the MPD came to controlling live without getting your hands dirty in the Vysex editor and keying in your control values.

  • nice vid , really simple for everyone to understand. however , when i right click to "slice to midi" I cant seem to find it?

  • Thanks man!

  • dude sounds kinda like joe budden.

  • Hi, kind of a newbie question but what are the key(s) to close a preset window?

  • @MrElijahperks Not sure what you mean.. Are you talking about the bass clef?

  • @JBlongz Like right after you set everything, the small window at the bottom.

  • massive tutorial thx

  • thx 4 dat , 1 of the most valuable vids lol

  • On the real homie, you need to do more videos. You keep that shit simple so anyone can understand. Not using jargon unnecessarily, Most cats on here you have to listen to them for 10 minutes explain shit I gotta go look up making it 20 minutes. Anyways, props to you homie. make more.

  • @dnlgberry Thanks! I would love to make a lot more videos but I don't get the time. Soon though.

  • 3:20 thanks, now i know where i can select slicing presets! i'm going to make some too! some really wild configurations come in mind right now. great vid

  • i like the video I use it to learn ableton a bit confusing at first.

  • QUESTION. I have hundereds of WAV samples vocals and hits. How do I easily put some of the samples I want into the drum rack without slicing every single 2 second clip??

  • @thirdfloorview Try selecting more than one and simply drag the selection into the pad area. Live will indicate its acceptance by highlighting a range of cells respective do your drag area and the amount of files you have. This is ideal if the samples are already cut the way you want.

  • @JBlongz That works great. However, my SIMPLER does not seem to be effecting my Samples at all?? I loaded Drum Rack, dropped 20 samples in, added Simpler, and its not working. What am I doing wrong?

  • @thirdfloorview Adding Simpler was your mistake. The only reason I used Simpler in this video was to create the preset for chopping a full sample into even pieces. Drum rack already has its own preset: Notice that when you open a blank Drum Rack, it automatically creates a simpler when you drag a sample into one of the cells. No need to add Simpler for your specific need.

  • @JBlongz I understand now. But what if I want to import 20 or more samples at a time and have them all have the same perimeters without changing every single Simpler preset for each sample?? For example I want the Vol to be -2.0 dB on every sample I Import, and have a release of 30 seconds. I CAN do this by slicing one single audio file up into pieces as you've shown above... but how do I do it for multiple samples all at once?

  • @thirdfloorview I tried unsuccessfully to create 'drag and drop' preset with "auto macro'. Live's current programming code doesn't seem to allow this. Perhaps it would be worth creating a thread on their forum to add the functionality. I'm sure they can code it in, but I can't say for sure because I don't know what their source code looks like.

  • Excellent videos!!! Please post more. Question. I play in a live electronic band and I'll be using the PAds to trigger VOCAL and ambient samples. Is this the best way to do that?

  • @thirdfloorview I think the best solution for you is to just drag the samples in. I havent yet found a way to create a drag-n-drop preset. I barely get the time to experiment these days.

  • question, i have a korg nanopad, a 12 pad simulator. how do i go along doing this? is there a specific way to set your nanopad to chromatic settings rather than having it set at random points? and how long do the samples need to be. another stupid question, how would big producers like Pete Rock or Premier set this shit up? if anyone could help me u'd be very helpful. oh yeah and thanks Jblongz. support real hip hop and real music all over the world!

  • question, i have a korg nanopad, a 12 pad simulator. how do i go along doing this? is there a specific way to set your nanopad to chromatic settings rather than having it set at random points? if anyone could help me u'd be very helpful. oh yeah and thanks Jblongz. support real hip hop and real music all over the world! Peace

  • @snifta That totally depends on your Nanopad settings. Ableton live cannot fix that. It depends on the controller preset. Perhaps the site has posted some presets on their forum.

  • Nice tutorial, seems like trying some different slicing setups would be a good way to break out of yr normal workflow and playing style and get some new sounds.

  • Problem:

When I map it and use then a sample it takes the changes for ALL samples at once! So when I turn a knob like transpose it transposes ALL 16 Pads! What to do?? :-/

  • @flowflash Thats what happens when you set the macro before saving as a preset. If you don't want all the pads to change at the same time, then leave out the transpose macro before saving the preset. Since you already created the preset, all you have to do is locate it in Live's browser, double-click or drag it into the set, unmap the macro, and then drag it back to the saved location. However I recommend you keep the first one you made (its useful), and just rename the new one before dragging.

  • @JBlongz

Hey Man. First, thx for this tutorial. Sorry if i have missed something very obvious, but how can i make a preset where sample start and end is not applied to every sample in the rack? Because that doesnt make any sense since i want to finetune the lenght of each sample individually. Your method applies all the drum rack controls to all samples. And if i do with the above method and define my knobs to the simpler itself, it still applies them to all of the samples. Can this be changed?

  • @YukihitoTsuge Remember that setting the macro while creating the preset mean that you are setting for all pads. To solve your problem, just make another preset WITHOUT a macro for the settings that you want to remain exclusive per sample.

  • Great Video! Helped me a lot! I have now an Akai MPK Mini and will try these configuration on it ;-)

    THANKS!!!

  • great video thanks.....

    one problem tho.....I do not have a key board and am trying to map the pads to my apc, but the pads in the rack do not high light when i click midi :{

  • @2jackjay2 Hmm. I wouldn't be able to help you there as I sold my APC40. My controllers are now Maschine, MPK88, and Oxygen25.

  • @JBlongz and PadKontrol

  • @JBlongz

    ok cheers

yes I have been looking at the padkontrol.....( "dear santa")...lol

so does the pad kontrol auto map to your drum rack in ableton

Im missing something stupid Im sure you can map the pads in the drum rack to a controller ....

  • @2jackjay2 I don't really use the PadKontrol to do much in live other than trigger scenes for complex projects. Its mostly used for Korg synth plugins as it automatically maps to them. However, you can use any pad controller to map the keys to drum rack. I use the pad on my mpk and Maschine (in controller mode) to use drum racks. They work just fine.

  • why can i hear anything

  • @theoutsideas Doublecheck the volume macro knob for the preset. Perhaps you saved the preset without setting the volume macro to zero db, in which case Live will set it to the lowest volume when you choose it as a macro control.

  • Hey man thank you for your dope tuts. I have been getting some sweet samples off my vinyl into Abelton. I have a problem though with my samples volume decreasing. How do I keep my volume stable? Thanks man. I wrote here because you actually respond back to your comments. Dope man thanks again.

  • @synuate I'm not quite sure what your volume issue is. If the volume was consistant during your import to Live, they set the volume macro as i did in the video and set it to zero before saving the preset. If the volume changes based on the pressure of you playing the keys/pads, then assign a macro for velocity and set it to the max.

  • @JBlongz Yep. that was it. For some reason my volume was at .83 or something and made them decrease in volume. Now, can you please do a tutorial on how to get this linked up to work with looper!? Or best way to record this. I can't seem to get looper to listen to my "MPC Chopping Style" preset which has my sounds. Thanks again.

  • @JBlongz is this only possible with ableton 8?

  • Thanks for this Tutorial. I am follwoing your steps in setting up the Macros for the sampler, but in my version (8.1.4) the Knobs on the sampler (at 0:49 min. in the video) are not present in my sampler. I don't know why. I created a drum rack, dropped the sampler on C1 opend up the chain list, enabled the Macros, enabley KEY mode, but these knobs (Start, End, Decay, etc. etc.) are just not present in my sampler. Any Idea? Thanks

  • @stansteez I used the 'Simpler' instrument, not Sampler.

  • Would be cool if you did a video about time stretching samples in Live like one would on MPC. Sampler and Simpler doesn't have time compression/expansion, and warping before slicing doesn't retain the stretching, instead only uses the marker as slice points. The only way I've found to do it is to freeze first. Any ideas?

  • why cant i click on slice midi track ? its in the create menu but it wont click its greyed out you know ?

  • @willbings You can only slice Audio tracks to Midi, not midi to audio

  • hey man do i have to warp a track before I sample it?

  • @jorelpri Not at all. All warping does it predetermine where the cuts will be according to its approximate tempo. It is not a necessity.

  • @jorelpri

  • Thanks man you're my hero for this one

  • Comment removed

  • @mcentertain Macros are not for setting each pad invidividually, it is meant to control several all pads once (if integrated into a preset). To control each pad manually, just edit the individual patches and exclude those specific settings from the macro. You can easily midi-map those settings to any available knobs on your controller.

  • wowwwww great tutorial you explained every step so clearly and made it so easy for me to follow your steps thanks a lot

  • thanks man .. great vid !

  • jblongz..... your nice wit it

  • Thanks!

  • amazing tutorial. straight to the point, laid back. thank you.

  • It will let me drop them on the other pads, but then the macros won't work. It will also let me drop it on the simpler patch one at the time, but that takes a lot of time and i will only be able to edit the macros for one sample at the time as well. Any solutions for this?

  • @chulukinat I haven't found a way to make a preset for dropping sample. Not sure if the feature is complete yet,but i will experiment when i have time. For now just try auto chopping (if you need the macros similar to how i did it), then manually adjust the chop area.

  • This is a nice tutorial but it doesn't work when you manually chop your samples in arrangement view. If I first chop my audio file in arrangement view and then select all of the chops to drop them on drum rack it won't let me drop them on the simpler pad we made.

  • @chulukinat It currently won't work that way. Why not do it as i showed, then adjust the slices the way you like. The auto chop can be edited after very easily by dragging the start and end points. You can copy pads over the others by holding ctrl while dragging.

  • @JBlongz thanks! i'll definately look into that. that way i will lose the warping though. do you know any way to enable warping with this method?
