you give your community a big service, operating a siren normally means you work for civil service (police, fire, medical) or something like that. sweet. but i'm curious: if a siren goes off in ALERT for a t-storm warning, once upgraded to TORNADO warning, does the attack signal override alert? you have a cool job, warning the people with the you own.
hey charlie @ 7:47 that was rotation you saw just a meso-cyclone from what i can tell... im an siren freak soccer lover, storm chaser landspout lovin' radio disc jockey!
Please dont move into my neighborhood... Really... I can look at the TV, and outside just fine without someone blasting a siren every five minutes there is a tornado warning.
@himmler251 I'm literally one county below Clarksville, only 15 miles or so to the south. The next siren test is scheduled for December 21, 2011 @ 12:00 noon. Feel free to stop by and film it! PM me for details.
I salute you for what you do!! I live in a medium size city...40,000+...and can't hear the sirens inside my house. If it wasn't for NOAA radio, I'd never know...you are doing a great service to your friends and neighbors. Those that don't like it need to stuff cotton in their ears when it gets stormy.
PS If the sky turns dark green....dig a hole and get in it. I was working at a radio station when we went under a warning/had to broadcast the warning/end not sound nervous. Sky got dark green!!
@soccerdude7330 Because you have to go outside to hear what it's trying to say and that puts you right in the middle of what they are trying to warn you about, !
@HyperFoxTails sirens are not useless they are meant to WARN people of DANGER the only injury you would get from a siren is hearing damage ( thats because you were to close to it)
@HyperFoxTails you're wrong. The signal must covert a big area and the fly time of the sound is quite long, so the alert must stay a little on more tha 4 min.
@Kaius1995 Your totally wrong - Read the book on how to operate the Air Raid Sirens (Early Warning Sirens). During a Air Raid/or Attack It is to Sound untill Danger over. and then the Steady tone sounded for all clear once the dangaer has past....For Tornado/or warnings a 4 min tone is sounded with a 3 min pause bettween sounding. (if the siren needs to be sounded again) A all clear tone (STEADY TONE) may or may not be sounded once threat has past, up to local athoritise to sound.
@HyperFoxTails Both of you are wrong. Tornado sirens sound for 3 minutes, then wind down. However, in some cases, like Tornado Season this year, some places blew their T-128's and 132's by running them non-stop for 30-45 mintues. After the 3 minute run, they can be re-activated whenever.
Thank you for alerting your citizens. As a storm spotter for Skywarn / NWS GRB, I appreciate your desire to keep your neighbors safe. I stress DEEPLY to not rely on storm sirens only though. A $30 NOAA radio will save your life. We just had a tornado pass by our house by 2 miles. I was able to report it and get the warning out too. All need a NOAA radio as much as you need a smoke detector.
@KC9EVP Thanks! I know for sure that the neighbors appreciate it. I am also a spotter and I always tell everyone I know to NOT rely on sirens as a primary warning device, since it is for warning those outside and can't be heard inside every home near it. I've always highly encouraged my family, friends and neighbors to invest in a weather radio. Almost everyone I know has one now. Our local RadioShack carries a big stock of weather radios and lately they have been a top seller in the store.
@KC9EVP Agree, our county down here in Alabama just activated the most advanced system in the nation (Google Jefferson County, AL EMA New siren system), it automatically pushes warnings to the sirens directly in the path of the polygon, to smartphones, and computers. We have 99% county coverage with Federal Signal 2001-DCs. But when the EF5 hit me, the thing that saved my life was my NOAA weather radio because the storm was so intense, the transmitter was hit so our sirens couldn't activate.
@highlanderhybrid A NOAA weather radio is always a good thing to have. I have one myself and it gets great reception, even in my cellar with the door closed.
@KC9EVP I had a weather radio, but it works like crap! It doesn't work anymore...but we are RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TORNADO ALLEY! I will ask for one for Christmas! :D
@SparklesAreMyFavrite I have my own sirens that I control myself, like a private system. In fact I just installed one of the other ones that I have the other day: /watch?v=wAlgHms1IYM
Omaha has a nice system, and they do have a bunch of them. They are far and few in my area lol
hay cool video i got a question do you work for the weather center do you have to have a license to have it cause i see home made ones that people make
@footballstar2354 Thanks! Just doing what I can with what I have laying around. I also have a Thunderbolt siren that is almost fully installed behind the shop.. It'll be finished within the next couple of weeks. Sound coverage is about to be increased significantly.
if u did this in tha middle of the night... i wouldnt be happy that u woke me up... but id rather be woken up by a siren than a tornado!!! p.s. great job with the Model 2!!
Dude... I lived in Kansas before I moved. We saw more tornados in a 2 month time span than people in Tennesse will see in a year. And if one of our neighbors would've done this, we probably would've torn it down in the middle of the night. I would honestly rather have my home destroyed than listen to this thing for 25 minutes. Let your town do its job. You aren't helping.
@Cravens091295 Kansas is a different place. You guys are used to tornadoes, we aren't. We also have a huge lack of warning devices due to the rural area that we are in. Tennessee unfortunately ranks very high on the tornado death charts, especially night time tornadoes.. and if a siren - no matter who runs it - can save a single life, then it's well worth the trouble. The neighbors appreciate what I do here and have absolutely no problem with it, and that's all that matters.
@Cravens091295 what the heck do you mean "let your town do its job?" the town obviously doesnt have sirens installed in that area so thats why its up to volunteers to warn people.
I am sure Kansas has a tornado warning system too, it is standard procedure to warn the public because it saves lives.
hey... do the people you hear actually heed the warnings that you give out with your siren? and when do you plan to have the thunderbolt up and running?
I want to build a thunderbolt on a flatbed truck and drive to small towns to warn them of an approaching tornado. I lived through the 04/26/91 tornado outbreak and one of the towns sirens didn't work. Sirens are a good thing not a toy that someone uses to annoy people.
@GNews10 At the time this video was taken, I didn't have the proper equipment to let it run by itself. However I have everything I need as of now and it's currently installed and running smoothly.
Very nicely organized, its not as bad as you think, try being in a situation where there is a mothership supercell with funnels all around, it is terrible to be around that environment, not to mention there was lightning every two seconds after 1 another, power was out for a day and a half, and an actual tornado killed five in the very township i live in, it was 3 hours of hell. 1 last thing i wouldnt be inside id be outside looking for it, i wanna stormchase, NICE THOUGH!!! like the siren
It has GOT to suck being right next to that siren. It was bad enough to hear it over the video but being there for real. God. You have got to be used to that to get get a headache or anything for it. I wish there was someone who had a siren around my house. I live in the country. Closest siren I believe is 20 miles. xD I have the at home storm warning things so....
He (You) needs to sound the warning for at least 3 to 4 minutes not for a short 2:30 minutes. And you did use the right tone for tornado Warnings... and whats up with the voice warning NO one can hear them any way and they are a waist of time, unless your a factory or school.
I know it's legal to own and run sirens here, but I thought you had to be very rural and NOT within hearing distance of others (at least down to 70 dB by the edge of your property line). So how do you do it? And your getting a Thunderbolt? Did the county/city give you permission to run in an emergency situation just so they didn't have to spend the cash buying their own? xD
@soonernut Yes, there are actually quite a few people that live close enough to hear this thing. I'd say 30-40 homes at the very least. Once I install the Thunderbolt, that data will change drastically.
awesome I bet they are happy to have that, being in the country without any warning sucks. I work in emergency management for a fairly large city in Oklahoma, and we upgraded awhile back from 25 thunderbolts to cover the whole city with 40 2001s, the range is better but they sound nowhere near as good as the tbolts did.
Dude I live right beside your Mama and Papa, It was, dang, it was CRAZY hailing down there, size of golfballs and rain, the rain took away all visibility too...it was bad... really really bad....
Fucking badass video bro!

@MrNascarFan2011 Dang, that's too bad. Then when a tornado hits your house you'd complain because you didn't hear the siren.

This is the most pitiful thing I've ever seen.
donkeyrazor 1 year ago
He (You) needs to sound the warning for at least 3 to 4 minutes not for a short 2:30 minutes. And you did use the right tone for tornado Warnings... and whats up with the voice warning NO one can hear them any way and they are a waist of time, unless your a factory or school.

So you sound the tornado siren once when there is a tornado warning issued and second if you or someone spot a funnel cloud on the ground right ?

lol " hey can yo hear dickson's siren ?, NO i heard your's though" : )
DivinityzBeAsT 1 year ago
I know it's legal to own and run sirens here, but I thought you had to be very rural and NOT within hearing distance of others (at least down to 70 dB by the edge of your property line). So how do you do it? And your getting a Thunderbolt? Did the county/city give you permission to run in an emergency situation just so they didn't have to spend the cash buying their own? xD
RoyFan33 1 year ago
What Model phone do you have? When Verizob rolls out the 4G phones I am going to get one.
Worcester2007 1 year ago
who are you trying to warn with your siren? rural neighbors?
soonernut 1 year ago
@soonernut Yes, there are actually quite a few people that live close enough to hear this thing. I'd say 30-40 homes at the very least. Once I install the Thunderbolt, that data will change drastically.

@soccerdude7330
awesome I bet they are happy to have that, being in the country without any warning sucks. I work in emergency management for a fairly large city in Oklahoma, and we upgraded awhile back from 25 thunderbolts to cover the whole city with 40 2001s, the range is better but they sound nowhere near as good as the tbolts did.
