@OccupyNAD Of course it's not. Deaf people just don't have the same affinity for music that hearing people do, and for obvious reasons. I do have many deaf friends that truly enjoy my interpretations though and do love music for what they can experience with it. Thank you for the compliment, and my ASL was terrible when I made this video, I agree. It's a learning process, and I'm always getting better.
I've noticed this, too! I'm hearing and I love music. I love to sign the music sometimes instead of singing it. It just adds another layer to the beauty to me. But I've noticed deaf either don't care or don't like signed music. Music just isn't the cultural concept in the deaf world as it is in the hearing world. It makes sense, though. Like you said, to them it's just words.
Ah.. I feel you. I had been in your shoes. I didn't know sign language until I transferred to deaf school during the middle school years. I barely knew ABCs. It took a lot of time for me to learn. Patience is the key! I have been doing some sign language videos lately. I'd like them to enjoy as much as I enjoy listening to music. There are number of ASL music that influence me to practice and learn to be.. you know.. more expressive. Some of the ASL videos amazed me with their skills.
@happydudeinthehouse Each dialect is pretty different, but there is an international form of sign language that is roughly based on ASL. Not everyone uses it though within the deaf community. I'd say if you understand the conceptual nuances of sign language in general it is pretty easy to understand what someone is talking about in any form of sign language. Moreso than if they were speaking a verbal language at least. But yes, each dialect is different. JSL is very different from ASL, etc.
@Catwalksymphony They're not dialects. They're completely different languages.
Someone who signs American SL would not understand Persian SL, for example. There are, of course, exceptions for sign families (ie, French SL and ASL), but that's no different than saying you can understand a bit of French if you know Spanish.
Hi! I'm trying to learn sign language & I love your videos, but because I am just starting I don't understand all the signs yet. I hope to one day be able to talk like this with someone. Keep up what you're doing, you are great!
@MissWynne100 If there are any specific signs you would like me to translate for you, just let me know what time in the video they are and I'll help you out. =) It takes alot of time and conversation to become fluent in any language, but with ASL especially you have to use it often or lose it! I've been using PSE for abouuuutttt... 10 or 11 years. Only started learning ASL about 2-3 years ago. I have alot to learn, still! You'll get it, it just takes time!
@Catwalksymphony Thank you for your fast reply. Right now I am trying to learn the basics. I hope that I will be able to follow you real soon. I do not know anyone that is deaf but in my job I encounter people that are from time to time & I am really interested in learning. I plan on trying it on a daily basis, just so I can keep it going & learning. I appreciate all you do & I will definatley let you know so that you can show me how to sign words that I don not know~Thanks again & hugs
Hi! I'm deaf. :) First, good luck on learning Chinese - it's definitely very hard learning a new language. Spanish was crazy hard for me until I visually broke down the words in a phonetic way - does that make sense?
As for what you said about ASL videos, I do notice what you're saying. For me, it has to have some semblance of beat and good imagery. If there's no beat, then I want to see real good interpretation. Maybe it's me being a snob, I don't know, but if there's no beat, then it's poetry
Keep up what ur doing... I understand u clearly well again I"m HOH and I lipread really well and yes I know what u mean by deaf cultures ignores the music cultures but they need to see how music are..... I get what ur saying... wow ur good!!! keep at it :0)
@ncdeafwolf I know many deaf people that love music, but I also know those that could care less about it. So it's kinda half and half from what I know. But for me I find that when I see a really GOOD asl song translation, it is akin to ASL poetry, like ewitteborg or tiffanythill does. They use handshapes to represent the concepts of the song and it's really beautiful. It's hard to take something that is so hearing-centric, that hearing people love, and make it accessable to the deaf.
ASL Music is not Deaf Norms! You are beautifully but your ASL sucks. No hard feeling! :)

Let's note the important difference in that.
