yes, picking every note, trying to use strict up/down alternate picking. I use a standard fender heavy pick. I don't think the kind of pick you use matters so much, as long as you're comfortable with it. I wouldn't recommend a real thin pick though.
best approach is to start real slow and practice with a metronome.
I can't pick cleanly at these tempos in general, just for really linear lines like this one.

The fact that you can shred and teach Linear Algebra is even more brutal. By the way, I'm attempting Malmsteen's Arpeggios from Hell right now any advice?

it's so fast that i can't tell..
whenever i try to do fast scale runs
my guitar pick always gets caught in the string and slows me down..
