Tempo shouldn't really be the hard part about this song. You can fluctuate the tempo as long as you have a musical reason to do so and can back it up with the emotion(s) you are trying to deliver. This is probably the hardest movement out of the three, due to the end of this movement. Holding that droning A for 20-some measures, you not only have to keep it in tune, but make it the most beautiful, non-boring A anybody has ever listened to. I'm playing this for my college sophomore recital.
Currently working on this - it's very hard to keep a consistent tempo at times, especially when practicing the solo part without accompaniment. Such a gorgeous piece though - I absolutely love it.
I agree Sparkes music is awesome, but there is some kind of passion in this movement where Sparke doesn't come close. They are two completely different composers, you can't really say one is better than the other.
Groom is awesome in this too.
p.s. I agree maybe a few intonation moments, but firstly we all get them, especially with euphoniums being built the way they are, and also standard/quality of instruments have come a long way since the 70's.
please, fellow euphonium players...don't hate me! I haven't heard this since I played it in "81"...but the intonation on the the D's and E's is so sharp that I can hardly listen!
It is a nice composition, i must say that, but better then Philip Sparke ? I don't know that, and in my opinion you can't judge about that... Philip Sparke's compositions have that little bit 'extra' that makes the music live.
The way Trevor plays this 2nd movement is absolutely beautiful. many have played it since but no one has come close to playing like this. His sound is perfect, tone is flawless and to play this movement takes a supreme musician. The whizz kids of today need only to listen to this to show them what a master of the euphonium Trevor is. Listen to other versions of this on you tube not one compares.
Still the greatest span and greatest performance of music for the euphonium. If you like the beautiful melancholy of this also check out the second movement of the Horovitz Sinfornietta for brass band. Divine!
Still one of the most beautiful movements from any euph solo.

This concerto is one of the best compositions ever written for the instrument. I much prefer this to Philip Sparke's compositions.

This is what I call absolutely perfect euponium playing in every regard.
Bernard Davies, Melbourne, Australia.
PS Did Trevor play "The Ransomed Host"? Because, if he did, then, I had the pleasure of hearing this live over 40 years ago.

it could be, he is a salvationist, and the Ransomed host is Sally music.
