@semiautoriflelover1 I don't know so very much about grains but I can tell you that is because the 5.56 has a longer casin so more power in the bullet itself and also the chances are you are using an AR-15 type platform which uses a DI system instead of the long stroke piston in your '74 which uses a much larger volume of gas and subsequently tales a substantial amount of power from the shot.

I have steel core 62gr nato 5.56 rounds and they go through more metal than my steel core AK74 rounds, the 5.45x39.
