i have the steam version of this game, when I launch the game off steam it goes to the splash screen and gives me the option to choose play. When i click on play, it crashes. Any ideas?
Got so close! Install went well, but I run into a problem at the end. It tells me that the disc has copy protections and that prevents Wine from running the game. When I run it, it gets as far as the "Please Stans By" screen in the very beginning then crashes.

hey dude, i don't know if you can help with this, but i purchased DLC via the games for windows live client. I can't seem to get the client to run. is there any way i can download/install that DLC? Also, I seem to have cursor issues when running the game. I have the game cursor, then there's the default Ubuntu cursor on screen at the same time. :|
@321410862 I don't know. I started my quest for a link to the PlayOnLinux webpage many years ago. It required great amount of training, but after I taught myself how to use Google properly it was very easy. And yeah, you have Caps Lock activated, please fix that, fucking mentalist/troll. :)
when i try to mount the iso file this message appears "CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format"!?!?! Can anyone help me!?!?! i try other fallout 3 iso files and they dont work!!! any other iso file works great!!!! PLEASE HELP ME

I got Fallout 3 to work at another computer with Ubuntu 9.10 x64 with Wine 1.1.38 (beta) and PlayOnLinux. Worked pretty well except that the sound is a bit outsynced (may be cause of the sound card I dont know). Now I'm at MY computer with Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and can't get this damn game to work fairly. :(
@jakeaboulafia To your first question, oblivion works fine. And to your 3rd question, those effects comes with ubuntu, and probably other linux systems without any downloads.
I have the same message. It matches the version of wine that was recently released. It's likely play on linux doesn't recognize it yet so hopefully it catches up soon. Alternately you could try and regress to an older version of wine.
Got Fallout 3 to run, but it still locks up from time to time with Ubuntu. It may just be my ATI Radeon card is not compatible even with the latest proprietary driver. For those who have a Linux box freeze up, here is a way out. Hold down Alt + Print
Screen keys, then slowly tap REISUB for a soft reboot.
This cleared up a lot of worries I had about using this App. I was very confused by all of the scrypting info the website was talking about. Glad to see I dont really need that
You can play in full screen, as with almost all games with WINE. I play in windowed mode to avoid video glitching due to different FPS in the game and video. I just make it easy for myself. :)
For some reason this does not work for me, and I can't seem to get any info on why it's failing. Everything installs fine, but when I launch the game, nothing happens. When I launch the game launcher, the splash comes up along with a generic WINE error, and then it crashes. I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04
Just a small note. For those of you, who doesnt use KDE or have it installed (Gnome/xfce/*box), there is a small gui GTK program that can mount numerous image formats very easy either via loop or via fuse, and is lighter on resources than Acetone. Google for "Furius Iso Mount".
everything works great. but the game wont start installing, i have an image and i changed the source from /dev/cdrom to virtual-drive/1 etc. with. iso mounted with acetoneiso. anyone ?
Hmm, I assume that you have made an image of your legally purchased Fallout 3. ;)
Since it is mounted on a different folder I think you must start the Wine configuration tool (winecfg) for the selected prefix and add /home/USERNAME/virtual-drive/1 as an cd-rom in the 'drive' tab.
You can always mount the iso image with the following command:
You can start AcetoneISO as root to mount things in /media. You can edit the applications menu item from 'acetoneiso' to 'gksudo acetoneiso' (I guess you use Ubuntu or something else with GNOME?). Then you will have a graphical popup that will ask you for your password and then start AcetoneISO with Root privilegies. :)
I'm no expert what so ever, but I have had some experience with WINE the last year and just written some guides and recorded some screencasts. Check out the WineHQ and see how your games perform with WINE. I would say that you should read some about WINE and install Ubuntu on your Windows partition (Wubi), and just try it out! Since the Ubuntu installation will be placed on your Windows disc you can easily remove it and just use Windows if you didn't like Linux. What graphics card do you use?
Both I suppose..dont have experience with both..I told you Im a windows-sheep like a friend of mine said.Anyway..I think most of the things I ll have to practice and experiment on my own ( i think Im not that bad in handling computer software )
Okay, If you encounter any problems then feel free to send me a message or drop a message in one of my videos. : )
I will happily help you as much as I can help you. It can be worth mentioning that I have only used 64-bit Linux a week a month ago or so, so I don't have knowledge how to fix some 64-bit specific problems. :)
i crash around 1:16

hey this is such a cool video!! i had a couple questions by the way --
1) can you make one of these videos for oblivion?? does it work okay?
2) i have a mac and i'm looking for a good vm to play oblivion. i just set up ubuntu and i was wondering if wine would run it okay?
3) how did you make the window move in a cool way and stuff? are those downloadable effects?

Thanks for making this video. This is really good and professional made. I hope it'll cause more users to be able to easily install Fallout 3.
BTW. Script is a little bit modified:
-new starting image (thanks to obi1-46)
-installation of latest DirectX from March 2009
-all configuration comboboxes and checkboxes are seen in Fallout3Launcher.exe
-there is an possibility to run Fallout 3 installed from POL's Steam
