You can germinate them easily on the window sil, do you have air conditioning in your house?, just keep the air temp down to about 21 degrees celsius and make sure the soil is moist. They'll germinate really fast, as soon as they're seedlings stick em outside. They won't last long in Florida dude, they'll die through being burned to death, the alternative is to grow them inside.
What sort of poppy would give most opium/morphine? The amount of morphine is around 10-15%, but there is always a sort that will give the best outcome, so to speak. I like the purple poppy thats beautiful.
@jStevieO Poppies are a very beautiful flowers to look at. Poppies are very toxic BUT the poison will release you from pain, it will give you a very pleasent sleep, It will calm you down when needed. The sideeffects are tendency to wanna take your own life (after you have used it for months). It can blur sickness because you dont feel the pain from the sickness. So all in all its both good and bad BUT i think it has most on the plus side because it is good to control the pain even cancer-pain.
i grow the tasmanian strain of p. somniferum on the east coast of the US in Rhode Island... in the Spring they do wonder. I've actually already started my crop indoors in peat pellets and in a month i plan to put them outdoors when its a lil warmer out
why are they stunted? It probly is the hot weather.anyway put some more down next year.Florida is very hard for some people. Those are pretty nice for florida. But up north where im at with the space you have inbetween they would have been hhuuuuuuuuuge!and it is very hard to overwinter in NYC area.good work!keep it up.
no worries, they look great for your zone.I think your totally right. My aqquantinces in the south say they start end october inside in peat pots? But i think you will have no prob next year if you start earlier like you daid maybe a month you know how hardy them sumofbiches are.Good job! keep it up
where im at im going to plant them at 3-27- this coming year, check out farmers almanac and look at the frost calender, good info there, i tried to grow poppy before but not much luck, probally planted them way too late myself. dunno
Dude, they're not stunted, you don't know the correct definition of stunting. Stunting is when a plant grows normally from germination and then stops growing because of dramatic enviromental change e.g Temperature, re-potting, ph level etc etc. These poppies are growing fine, they are not stunted at all, they are just smaller than the usual because the place where this dude planted them are not as desirable as an Opium Poppy needs.
they really got large pods but the weather started getting hot and knocked em over, but that wasnt all the ones i grew some have quit large pods....yeah they would grow better up north...washington is one of the best states to grow in....
Those flowers growing near where the children play? are you an organic gardener? I see a lot of mulch in the ground. The way you tenderly touch them seem like ur are in love with those flowers or someone close to you loves them.
i live in zone 10 south florida and my hens and chicks wont germinate, how can i properly germinate them?

Gorgeous flowers!
I'm pleasantly surprised that "the man" is willing to overlook the cultivation of these ornamentals despite their potential for illicit use.
I even saw an episode of Martha Stewart where she was growing them in her yard. :D
