  • Seriously, I'm in tears. One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite comedies. I adore Dustin Hoffman :)

  • I once was like the character "Michael" in the scene with agent, not as extreme but argumentative, I grew up. My social media alter ego, is a bit more forward but comes up with some good ideas as I am shy & reserved. Sincerely, Jason Lowen

  • Totally agree - I reckon this is the best scene as well. Great timing and varying the pace when they are talking across each other. Sydney Pollack gets 'frazzled' bang on. Tootsie is still a great film (or certainly the first half is). Thanks for uploading!

  • My favorite scene in the whole movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "I DID AN ENDIVE SALAD THAT KNOCKED THE CRITICS ON THEIR ASS!"

    Shear brilliance!

  • "I'm your agent, not your mother!! I'm not supposed to find plays for you to star in, i'm supposed to FIELD offers, that's what I do!"

" 'Field offers??' Who told you that, the agent fairy??"

  • My God Sydney Pollack was brilliant too. Forever missed.

  • This scene and the one with the agent in the Russian restaurant are comedy genius... thanks for uploading!

  • yeah...this is one of my favourite scenes in this movie. the other is when "dorothy" reveals her true identity live on national tv....

  • hilarious

  • Great post!

  • My date performed this today onstage. I helped him practice. I thought it was so cool. ^_^

  • i miss Sydney Pollack R.I.P. :(

  • What's really funny (unintentionally) about the arrogant New Yorker put down of people in New Jersey living next to chemical waste is that Love Canal is in New York!

  • OMG!!! I remember watching this movie at the theater and it was packed!! People were dying from laughter.

  • That music is sooooo 80s.

  • "yees and you bust everybODYELSES ASs too!" xD

  • this awesome banter is my favourite scene in the movie. George is played perfectly by mr Pollack and he's just damn exilarating

  • This was a classic scene! ...The agent, and his client.

The late Sydney Pollack was excellent, and the great Dustin Hofman of course! they don't make movies like this anymore. It showed a true actor in all his narcisism relate his feelings to is agent.

Today as great as you think they may be we have hardly no "actors" around these days...all we have is "eye candy, robots, or politicians who are in the buisness only, to make money and feel powerful; very little artists emerging today.

  • In case any of you are interested in movie mistakes, watch the pens on the desk in this clip.

  • @mixedgrain 0:48 haha! xD

  • "...They can see that in New Jersey" LOL

  • "NY it's a coast, too"..:)

  • Perfect scene. The other one in George's house is also super funny.

  • One of my all time favorite movie scenes.!!!!

  • "WHO GIVES A SHIT?!!! Nobody wants to pay $20 to watch people live next to chemical waste, they can see that in New Jersey"...golden...simply golden

  • A Tomato doesn't have logic!!! A Tomato can't MOVE..................I did a whole deep salad that knocked the critics on there ass LOL.

  • This is definitely classic. Don't see too many recent movies with this much energy in dialogue.

    Love this movie!!!

    Its all ripe tomatoes!!!

  • i agree with you

  • this is hilarious

  • Sydney Pollack (RIP) can really bring it-his comedic timing is always just terrific.I

still laugh when I think of him in HUSBANDS & WIVES too!

  • Oh my gosh, I just re-watched Husbands & Wives recently..that scene w/ him & Woody Allen in the store arguing about why Pollack left his wife, telling Allen to butt out b/c he keeps calling his new bimbo gf a cocktail waitress, then he suddenly says "and your mother's not in town, she's in Florida!" b/c he knows Allen's using that as an excuse not to have dinner w/them...so classic and real and hilarious..it doesn't even seem scripted!

  • Dustin Hoffman is much better than Alec Guinness was

  • Classic

  • You're a TOMATO!!! A tomato doesn't have logic! A tomato can't move!!!

    Priceless!

  • @arrestedeveloper,

    God that never gets old.

  • Funniest scene in the movie!

  • dustin hoffman come ryan gosling

  • rip sydney pollack

  • LOVE THAT MOVIE...MY FAVOURITE EVER..i m an actress and i love this movie

  • Actually, all the 3 Tootsie scenes Pollack participated in are brilliant, hilarious to the point of rotfl-ing and i guess he had to be utterly entitled to expect the best out of the actors he ever directed : giving such outstanding performances himself, he shouldn't expect any less from them...

  • I know Jessica Lange won Best Supporting Actress, but I also say that Sydney Pollak should have been nominated for & WON Best Supporting Actor. A truly unappreciated performance.

  • "...Y O U W E R E A T O M A T O !!!

    A TOMATO DOESN'T HAVE LOGIC!

    A TOMATO CAN'T MOVE!!"

Honest to god (even though i don't believe in one), here where Pollack cracks up, has always been one of the most appreciated moments in movie history as far as my taste goes. The whole office scene of course too.

  • Brilliant scene.

  • "YOU WERE A TOMATO! A TOMATO DOESN'T HAVE LOGIC!"

One of the best lines in a classic scene...

  • huh i just saw this, after posting.

Well im REALLY glad i found there's people out there that get the same feelings from scenes/lines like this...

(i now remembered Murray going "...mum?" when he first faced "Dorothy", having just gotten out of sleep and i'm cracking up here haha)

  • HAPPY B-DAY DUSTIN!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i heard that dustin hoffman wanted sydney pollack to play his on screen agent, because the relationship on screen was the same off screen.

  • something like that. Dabney Coleman was supposed to play the agent. Dustin said to Pollack that he would put the dress on for pollack if he played the agent, to the point of sending him flowers from dorothy for about a month before the movie started shooting.

  • WHO GIVES A SH*T!!! ha ha

  • Check out Tootsie the Play on YouTube.

  • READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoffman did a movie with Benny Hill (called Italain Job). Hill was considered funnier than Monty Python by a UHF station running both shows (station was WLVI TV Channel 56 in Cambridge, Ma)! I agree! About MP---combine "exodus" and "international" and ".org".

  • This is one of the strangest things I've ever read. You've posted it in a few places. Dustin Hoffman is not in the Italian Job. What are you talking about? What does a UHF station have to do with it?

  • Classic scene from a terrific movie. Easily deserving of it's status on the American Film Institute's list of all time greatest.

  • I love this scene. I WAS A JUICY, SEXY TOMATO!

  • lmfao!!!!!

Nobody did a good tomato as me....i was the best vegetable...best tomato and cucumber!!!!

  • favorite scene, hands down

  • who told you that, the agent fairy?

  • I am in LOVE with this scene. I wish I could make out with it....

  • you have issues........:I

  • why couldnt you make this like 5 seconds longer so we can see him walking down the street ???

  • I miss movies like this, will be nothing else like it ever again. Cherish it everyone!

"this is a coast too, new york is a coast too" lol

  • such a great movie

  • The tomato argument is CLASSIC! "nobody does a vegetable like me!"

  • A true classic, and the greatest scene in the film - both play it perfectly!

  • Is it just me or does Sydney Pollack kind of look like Michael Richards Cosmo Kramer character in this.

  • I can't even send you up for a commercial..you played a tomato for 30 seconds, they went a half day over schedule cuz you wouldn't sit down

    Yes, it wasn't logical

You were a TOMATO!!!! A Tomato doesn't have logic! a tomato can't move!!!

That's what I said...so if he can't move, how's he gonna sit down George? I was a stand up tomato, a juicy, sexy beefsteak tomato!!! Nobody does vegetables like me!

  • How about putting the whole movie on...PLEASE!!!!!!

  • i agree.

  • "god forbid you should lose your standing as a cult failure".

  • pollack is so great in this movie.'there are no women like you, you are a man'. perfect

  • yea well you are one of the very few that hated it..this is a classic. Hoffman was sposed to look ridiculous..hes a man dressed as a woman for gods sake...grab some creativity numbnuts

  • Listen you fucktard - I play 4 instruments and I sing. I am a photographer, filmaker and writer. So before you go off insulting people with completely unoriginal epithets, you can lick my left nut. Let ME and people LIKE ME decide who and what the fuck is creative and people like you can keep bagging my groceries. Badmouthing Tootsie gave you away - you are an uncouth, unsophisticated, uneducated turd and the last "creative" thing you probably did was take a crap in your mom's basement toilet.

  • sissy?? you really are 40..they haven't used that word since the late 60's!! Laughing my ass off. That is the limit of your creative insulting?? You have to be kidding me.

  • Well let's be a little bit more sympathetic to him. After all he's been through the 80ies as an adult, yet never got the chance to appreciate Tootsie's performances.

Dang i almost feel sorry for him.

  • Then sir, you must be having the deepest, widest and smelliest opinion the world has ever known.

I'd advise you to wash that stinky opinion of yours every now and then for the benefit of all - then again you run the risk of losing the bar of soap while doing it.

Not to mention that you run the risk of enjoying it, too.

  • "YOU WERE A TOMATO!!! A TOMATO DOESN'T HAVE LOGIC! A TOMATO CAN'T MOVE!"

"That's what I said! So if he can't move, how's he gonna sit down, George?! I was a stand-up tomato, a juicy, sexy, beefsteak tomato...NOBODY DOES VEGETABLES LIKE ME!!"

  • @kieguy,

    Dustin Hoffman is great.

  • This is such a good movie. Hoffman is brilliant in it.

  • field offers?

  • "Who gives a shit! If they want to see people living next to chemical waste they can go to New Jersey!"

  • One of many great scenes in the movie.

  • "...He is known"

"That qualifies him to ruin 'Iceman Cometh'?"

    Nice line.

  • Miss you Sydney. RIP dear man!

  • This works well as part of a movie or as just a scene in an Actors Workshop. Jesus Christ imagine what agent cant relate to this. Ha Ha!!

  • "I know this is gonna disgust you, but a lot of people are in this business to make money, they really are!"

I dunno how many actor friends of mine i've wanted to say that to..!!

  • This ISN'T the best scene. NOTHING beats the ending reveal live.

    Do you have that scene??????????

  • "Owe it all up to her and on her terms."

"Oh God, here comes the terms"

One of the greatest scenes ever!

  • i did an evening of vegetables off broadway!

  • "I did an endive salad that knocked the critics on there ass!"

  • Long Live SYDNEY POLLACK, what a Talented Director, and a Funny GUY! I HAVE TO AGREE WITH MICHAEL on this ONE, A TOMATO CAN'T SIT DOWN...A TOMATO DOESN'T DO ANYTHING!

  • "Nobody wants to pay $20 to watch people living next to chemical waste; they can see that in New Jersey."

  • One of the greatest scenes in film history.

  • Sir Sydney Pollack.. God, what a talented Jew...!!

  • "God forbid that you should lose your standing as a cult failure!"

  • The scenes between pollack and hoffman are the best.

  • RIP Sydney x

  • You were a TOMATO!!!! A Tomato doesn't have logic! a tomato can't move!!!

That's what I said...so if he can't move, how's he gonna sit down George? I was a stand up tomato, a juicy, sexy beefsteak tomato!!! Nobody does vegetables like me!

  • "when you wanna send a steak back, Michael Dorsey is a name"

  • you're not going to raise twenty five cents!

  • Seamless......So Great

  • "That's too limited, no one in Hollywood will hire you"

  • we know

  • "I will not get sucked into this conversation Michael."lol miss ya Syd

  • Does anyone have the restaurant scene where Sydney Pollack's character begs Dustin..."I begged you to get some therapy?"

  • I agree. I ask for the same scene 2 days ago. It is one of the funniest scenes I have ever scene.

  • this is when good acting was crucial for any serious comedy... not sure this is present it today's films with too good looking marginally talented people..

  • "Nobody wants to pay $20 to see a play about people living next to chemical waste! They can see that in New Jersey!"

  • could someone post the tea room scene please?

  • "this is 'the coast' too . I love this scene.

  • I love this scene. I think this is one of Hollywoods greatest. RIP

  • Classic!

  • Always wanted to meet this guy. Mr. Pollack always seemed like the friendliest, most approachable talent in the world. Have always been a big admirer of his. And he will be forever emblazoned in my memory for (brilliantly) arguing with Dustin Hoffman over the logistics of being a tomato. Now I must just say God rest him. Thanks for this.

  • In Woody Allen's "Husbands & Wives", Sydney Pollack has a memorable argument at a friend's soiree, when he goes off on his young, New-Age girlfriend played by Lysette Anthony--Hysterical and classic!!!

Sydney Pollack was unquestionably a versatile artist. He will be missed...R.I.P.

  • One of my heroes!

    R.I.P. Sydney!

  • "..I'm talking to the coast."

"This is a coast, too, George. New York is a coast, too."

    "Oh, boy."

    Brilliant scene. A great artist.

  • "Nobody wants to pay twenty dollars to watch people living next to chemical waste! They can see that in New Jersey!" Syndey Pollack should've won an Oscar just for that line alone. RIP, Syndey.

  • I also loved his scene in Death Becomes Her. A great Director!!

  • hows bout Michael Clayton?

  • A class-act, top-notch Director, Producer, and Actor will sorely be missed, but your dreams, and your work will live on forever.

  • Is there acting like this anymore? Is there? On both ends...brlliiant. Should be required viewing for aspiring actors

  • Would someone please put the restaurant scene on here. It's where Dustin Hoffman meets his agent at the restaurant dressed as a woman and sits down with him. It is one of the funniest scenes ever with Sydney Pollack.

  • I always loved that New Jersey line and I'm a lifelong resident of the state.

    R.I.P. Sydney Pollack

  • great director, great actor

    big loss

    may god rest his soul

  • Rest in peace, Mr. Pollack. He was an outstanding director and actor. Tootsie, after Out of Africa are my all time favorite films. Condolescences to his family. He was a wonderful gift to filmmaking. Rest in peace, sir.

"A tomato doesn't have logic!". Hilarious.

    I'll miss you, Sydney.

  • SIDNEY simple: you were the greatest!

    Te extrañaremos!!!!

  • When I heard, this was the first thing I looked for.

  • Sydney was one of those artists who always brought quality and heart to his work, whether acting or directing. He reminded us of how good it is to be human, to feel, to laugh, and love.

  • Well-said - God bless Sydney Pollack and his family R.I.P.

  • Rest in peace Syd, your birlliance will be missed

  • So sad... Rest in Peace, Syd. You are missed.

  • All aspiring actors should see this movie. Great acting!

"I'm your agent, not your mother!" - Pollack LOL

  • i agree .. best scene by Pollack.

  • I LOVE this film. It is so brilliant. You root for dustin hoffman all through the film. And Sydney Pollack plays his agent so well. This film reminds me of a simpler hollywood. Back in the day when it was all about getting a agent and hitting the big leagues in acting. Very inspiring film.

  • classic, Dustin CAN act circles around just about everyone...

  • YOU WERE A TOMATO.... gold!!!!

  • please post when they meet at the tea room

  • This is my joint fave film along with Some Like It Hot and i realised they are both films about men dressing up as women to get jobs! LOL

I love this film.Dustin and Sydney are brilliant as always.
