I believe what he meant by taking initiative in inventing the internet was that he pushed for its civilian use, which is what made the internet what it is today and not something used by small groups of people at universities and government facilities.

I didn't hear him say he "invented" anything. Sounded like he said he took part in getting the Internet going. Such a thing requires money from our government. Legislators vote to give money to such enterprises and it sounded like he was saying he did just that.

I think people believe Gore was talking about inventing packet-switching. That had been around for years, and all you had were private networks and standalone "videotex" services.
Gore's legislation and lobbying different parts of government was what created the internet. He "took the initiative" in that process.
So that's the statement everyone is harping about. It's just a mistake in terms or unfinished (eg created internet AWARENESS). By then the web and web browser had been public for a decade thanks to scientists at CERN. My reading says the internet goes way back to the 50's with advancement of computers and gradually developed through the 60's. The intranet was in university libraries by the 70's.

Company profits should not be part of the supply/demand figure as long as the company is still profitable, and taxing profits only should keep investors happy because it shouldn't affect the company's income to function, and any money used by the company to create jobs and meet demand won't be taxed on the company.

I think people believe Gore was talking about inventing packet-switching. That had been around for years, and all you had were private networks and standalone "videotex" services.
Gore's legislation and lobbying different parts of government was what created the internet. He "took the initiative" in that process.

So that's the statement everyone is harping about. It's just a mistake in terms or unfinished (eg created internet AWARENESS). By then the web and web browser had been public for a decade thanks to scientists at CERN. My reading says the internet goes way back to the 50's with advancement of computers and gradually developed through the 60's. The intranet was in university libraries by the 70's.

For example, in the 60's the United States Congress took the initiative to put man on the moon. That doesn't mean that congress actually put a man on the moon. All it means is that they approved what was necessary to do it.

He did help establish the first internet browser, Mosaic. He also helped create commercial internet, where he was cosponsor of the 1992 information infrastructure and tech act. He's been legislating bills to help progress internet since he a congressman.

Company profits should not be part of the supply/demand figure as long as the company is still profitable, and taxing profits only should keep investors happy because it shouldn't affect the company's income to function, and any money used by the company to create jobs and meet demand won't be taxed on the company.

@FLBlueShield How about taxing company profits? That would solve your problem of higher prices because employees could be paid more with having the company lose money except for profitable income. That way you can charge the same price for your goods, pay your employees well, and still make money. You just don't make as much money. Actually you could work the system so if they paid their workers more money, you could tax their profits less, this gives them incentive to pay their employees better

I've heard references to this quote so many times, but this is the first time I've actually heard the interview. It sounds to me as if he's referring to his role in getting websites started for various government agencies.
