I can never understand why Lewis is so under-rated by a lot of people. The best heavyweight of his generation, beat everybody he stepped in the ring with, had both Tyson and Bowe avoid him for years. This was one of the 5 greatest heavyweight fights of the last 20 years. If only it had been for a belt, it would have been immortal. Damn was Mercer tough! I remember watching it live. It was part of a HBO heavyweight triple-header at Madison Square Garden in 1995. I really wanted to see it called a draw. I thought each fighter won 6 rounds each and neither one deserved to lose.

I thought it was a very close fight with some very close rounds. I had it even after 6 with Mercer clearly winning rounds 1 & 6 and doing slightly more in round 5, and I had Lewis clearly winning round 2 & 4 and doing a bit more in round 3
I though Lewis did more in rounds 7 & 8, and I thought rounds 9 & 10 very close, Lewis edging 9 and Mercer just taking the 10th

If you followed lennox Lewis over the years, you will notice how much blocking hes done in this match more than any other. Ray Mercer's punches must really hurt and vice versa. I saw a aftermath video of this fight, both fighters were interviewed at their homes, and they both said they would never fight each other again. It took a lot of them both.

Round 8 was virtually even. I guess Lewis won Round 8 by the thinnest of margins. Mercer won Round 9. It was beautiful how he took Lewis's best shot and didn't flinch!

This was one of the 5 greatest heavyweight fights of the last 20 years. If only it had been for a belt, it would have been immortal. Damn was Mercer tough! I remember watching it live. It was part of a HBO heavyweight triple-header at Madison Square Garden in 1995. I really wanted to see it called a draw. I thought each fighter won 6 rounds each and neither one deserved to lose.
And anyone who thought Lewis wan't tough, just watch this fight in its entirety.

People who had never been in a ring have ridiculed Mercer but that guy was one of the best of his era. He was an animal...a real tough mother. Lewis put in a superb performance to edge this guy.

That's as wrong as hell to even bring that up! Mercer has to be near 50 now, and I can only assume he's doing that out of need for a payday. And besides, you said it, a KICK to the head. Let me know how well 'ol Remy takes one (or anyone for that matter) when they are 50.

Actually they couldn't have won 6 rounds each because there were only 10 rounds total.
I thought it was a very close fight with some very close rounds. I had it even after 6 with Mercer clearly winning rounds 1 & 6 and doing slightly more in round 5, and I had Lewis clearly winning round 2 & 4 and doing a bit more in round 3
I though Lewis did more in rounds 7 & 8, and I thought rounds 9 & 10 very close, Lewis edging 9 and Mercer just taking the 10th

after watching these rounds, i see how a true heavyweight should fight, for me its quite inspirational to see. though i'm a big lewis fan, my hats off to the tough as old boots merciless ray mercer. it would have been fitting to see him with a title belt. a credit to the division.

Mercer was undefeated and in his prime 5years before this and he got beat by a 42yrs old Larry holmes(unaminous decision)!
Eventhough many think Mercer beat Lewis(to close to call n my opinion).Lennox is lucky to never fight a younger mercer , because it would have been lights out in the first round for Lewis

it funny how wladimir name just popped out of the blue.
But since the lewis fight, no one beat mercer except for wladimir and to be fair mercer was robbed against lewis by a split decision.
Mercer was well past it before he fought holyfield, and holyfield had heart and shoulder problems. But holyfield knockdown mercer and fairly won the fight by unaminous decision.
mercer past his prime still could hang in with the top fighter but after the kltschko fight ,mercer began to get battered by bums
