Not sure if anyone has asked this yet or not, but can you use this technique to transfer an image to an acrylic plastic panel or is there a better method?
Having trouble finding any kind of Gel Medium.. I have found an 'Acrylic Medium' but I think it's for thinning paint. Could you suggest a particular craft store I might try (Melbourne, Australia)?
@EinsteinsMuse - Hi, acrylic medium and gel medium are often the same thing. What most people use is actually called "acrylic gel medium" which can be glossy or matte. It comes in different weights such as as heavy, regular and soft. Regular is probably a good one to start with. Brands include Golden, Liquitex, or Winsor & Newton. Most art shops will stock these - in Melbourne, try Senior Art Supplies (you can also order online, and they stock Golden products) or Eckersley's. Hope this helps!
this worked very good. do you think it would work on a stained surface? i would like to transfer pictures and text onto a a stained table made out of mdf or cabinetry grade plywood. also after the picture has been transferd what do you do about the excess acrylic medium gel? thanks
I tried this method today on linen fabric. It worked very well. I used impasto gel 2. how do I remove the dried gel layer to get the farbic soft again? Is there a method to get the image fixed so that I can wash the fabric? thanks for your help. the idea of cleaning the transparency film with alcohol so that I can reuse them is great! I'd really appreciate any further good ideas.
Awesome tutorial....can't wait to try this! Quick question....the transfer image appears to have a sheen. I prefer a matte finish on my completed artwork. Shall I use a matte gel medium as a transfer medium?
can u reuse the transfer sheet? do you think you could do this with warm wax instead of gel? I think i may try this with my encaustic , maybe warm the wax surface a bit first, well i will try it and let ya know i guess. cool technique!
Do you sell your stencils? I have been watching you for quite a long time, and can not find stencils as good as yours, nor can i make them as well. so, do you sell them, please??? Thanks and keep it up! ;)
Wow Very awesome work Thank you!! But this novice wonders?!!@#@! What would happen if you left the image too long with the acetate on, would it be permanent, or would you still be able to remove it!?
The ending was very cool with the three faces. Anyway, can you reuse the transparencies in your printer or do you have have to buy new transparencies everytime you want to do it. I'm just wondering if you could clean the transparencies with soap and water and reuse them. I'm guessing they're kind of pricey.
I love your work you are such a talented artiest ..... This technique is really cool ... however I have a canon mp640 and don't seem to have a setting for printing on transparency film do you mind my asking what printer you are using or maybe suggest one I could look into ? thank you ...
Hey, what kind of gel is that you use? Could you please tell me brand and name? I would like to try that but I don't know what and where to buy. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering why you did not just use a brayer tool for an even pressure when going over the transparency? This is what we use in cardmaking.
enjoyed that a lot. would love to see process for preparing the Stack - and doesn't the spare glue leave a mess? can you keep adding more gel and keep the surface clean and flat?
Found this today. I have been dithering. lol. I have a few vintage photo's of my great grandfather in uniform. Handsome man in French uniform, i would love to use in a tech like this but I needed a boost. thank You! Very easy to understand.
The video is great. I've tried this several times using all of the same supplies. The transfer film is sticking to the paper and ripping the paper off. I've tried it 4 different times with no success. Can't imagine what I'm doing wrong, all 4 times I've let the transfer film set for several hours. Gary your brilliant, it must be just the thing for you. Thanks for the video anyway. I will keep trying!
Thanks Gary - loved that new idea. I have used lots of your techniques and I have now a Gary Reef gallery along my back fence - paintings are cement sheet.
That was quite simply AMAZING!! i CAN'T WAIT to try this out...you are one clever guy...also loved the old book you cut up and painted etc...coming to NZ anytime soon?? :)
Thanks for another wonderful top quality tutorial. Definitely going to try it out. You could do some interesting stuff combining this technique with the scanner art too, because that would be copyright free too.
This is really excellent, thank you! I really love the colors you used in the background of that one. Once you have transferred your image - since you used inkjet, can you add more on top of this transferred image or will the image run if you got it wet? Or does the paste keep it locked in after its dry?
win! I am so trying this! I always get fuzzy paper stuff left over that I can't get rid of from gel medium transfers when I do paper/magazines and this looks better and more realistic. Thank you so much for sharing this. <3 <3 <3
Thanks so much for this tutorial, Gary! It was fabulous! Being one of those people who would like to paint realistically, but can't, it's a wonderful way to get the look I want. I liked your ending, too. Very clever and way cool! Loved the mini music clip, too. Can't imagine why. LOL. Get up offa that thing and dance and you'll feel better! Hell, yeah! Big Hugs :-)
LOL yes i have watched you so many times dancing away in that chair...so awesome! And the song was like OMG i love it so i had to find it. I think u have started something with 'chair dancing' he he
I like it a lot to, these vids, your'e a good teacher and you know a lot. I *did* know this technique, but never try it, I simple use a paper print from my inkjet. But now I see the way you did it and what result you have, it inspires a lot Gary, I certainly want to try it out your way, I think the result is much more better :)
Yay for technique of the week!!!! I love these little tutorials :) You mention using your own images and being careful of copyright (and wisely so), but where did you find the insect and skull images? Is there a site that has free images or where you "buy" an image? Just curious, thanks. I love the look of these Gary, great idea!
Dover Books has tons of really fabulous books of copyright free images. Just about anything you can imagine, they have. Some of their books even come with the images on cd, too, so you can print them right from the disk and skip having to scan them in or copy. I have oodles of these books and use them for collages. You can find them at Amazon, if you'd like to check them out. Hugs :-)
Great informative video! I'll refer back to this often. Thanks!!

I believe you can reuse the transparencies as many times as you wish! Just clean them with rubbing alcohol between uses.
