  • thank you

  • Great video tech show. much success.

  • You do awesome work mate. Keep it up :)

  • hey do i need necesarly the headphone amplifire?

  • What if I want plug in my xlr adapter to the headphone amplifier, how will I then connect headphones? what if I want to use two pairs of head phones one for my boom guy and one for my audio guy?

  • Where do I find the new firmware update for the t2i? Also where in the camera menu do I find the audio monitor?

  • what lens is on the t2i in this vid?

  • Great video. I bought my 5d mark ii used and I need the USB to Composite cable and I am having trouble finding it. Any suggestions?

  • Real nice Tip U showed us there. Thank´s

  • I'm using a Canon EOS 600D. At the moment Im using the 3,5 mm audiojack for my M3 Rode microphone. How is the best way for me to plug in an adapter for headphones? So I both can record and listen to it at the same time?

  • @Keitaro9202 watch the video maybe?

  • It doesnt work on my t3i do you have any idea why?

  • @TheGEffects it doesnt work on my 60D either :/

  • @1HollowRockEnt1 I've looked around on the internet and it turns out that the 60Ds and 600Ds soundchip is different from the others

  • @TheGEffects im not too sure about that, but after loads of tries i managed to get it working with the latest magic lantern on my 60D!! i can now monitor external source inputs and the internal mic with the usb to composite cable!

  • Comment removed

  • I was slightly confused by your video. If I plug in my rode stereo mic I will be monitoring that? or will i be monitoring the built in mic?

  • lol buy real movie cam

  • Can I monitor audio without magic lantern. For instance still listen in but without the on screen levels.

  • If you are using a Zoom H4n and your camera does not have a mic input (thus, you are recording audio separate and syncing later), can you just plug in headphones directly to the H4n? I am looking to get one.

  • @GreenVinylProd The H4N has a dedicated monitor mode and jack for headphones.

  • For the canon T3i... I bought the AV out(RCA) cable and the Fiio when I tried to hear the audio with out connecting a source for video feed it did not work, I had to connect the AV cable to a monitor(t.v) as shown in the video.

  • these things work with T3i?

  • i have bought a t3i and installed magic lantern but it wont let me set usb monitoring or any other audio setting accept the levels...will it still work?

  • wow awesome. im curious to find out how using the E5 to amplify the rode directly sounds when fed into a zoom H1 set to a low imput volume.

  • Thanks so much man. Finally found a solution

  • good job!

  • I am having trouble hearing audio with this setup while recording. Can only hear during playback. Any suggestions?

  • Well then! Say you have a T2i and you record audio with a h4n and want to monitor that sound and at the same time have a small monitor for the camera. Do you use the same method?

  • Is there any other way to monitor sound with headphones, on a T3i (other than purchasing a monitor) ??? Thx for your answers!!!

  • Can't seem to find the answer to roeroe305's question about hooking up to T3i... @onelonedork Do you absolutely need a monitor in order to get sound into your headphones or can this be done without the need of a monitor ? Did the T3i "shutting down" problem get fixed ? Anyone ? Thx.

  • What is your exposure / framerate for this video?

  • so you don't need magic lantern for this?

  • I have to praise the work on your videos they do seem quite fast to me..lol...nonetheless might give a try and try something at your site...regards...O

  • I hope you see this question.

Would you suggest the ART usb dual that you reviewed (that costs about $70) or this system? I have a canon rebel t3i, an azden sgm 2x shotgun, and currently just an xlr to 3.5mm adapter. I ask because I get more noise than I would like. The t3i already has agc (which I have been told to leave low) I know that both solutions give you audio monitoring and both seem acceptable. For my situation, what do you suggest?

    Thanks.

  • @TheIndyfilmer I am very curious about this as well. I have the Azden shotgun (XLR) going into the BechTek adapter, and I experience the dreaded Canon hiss.

  • lol i didnt read the description

  • i just downloaded magic latern on my t3i now it monitors sound but i still cant monitor audio with the headphones, the screen turns off when i plug headphones in the usb port

  • @roeroe305 ML doesn't support Audio Monitoring for the T3i yet. I am pretty bummed out myself. I just bought a t3i myself. Us T3i users will have to wait a bit longer to get audio monitoring that way.

  • @onelonedork hey can you do a video showing live view from a computer monitor or/and laptop as a monitor to view while recording a stationary video setup?

  • Hey man how's it going? I just wanted to say that I really like your channel very much. I have a question that maybe you can help me with.

I have an old Canon 300D or Digital Rebel. Every time I'm taking photos it is very difficult for me to review them 'cause of the small screen. I was watching your videos and I'd like to know if there is any way that I can connect my camera to a monitor and view the photographs right after taking them?

Thanks in advance I would really appreciate any advice!

  • Do you need Magic Lantern to do this?

  • I've bought the headphone amplifier for monitoring my sound on my 600D/T3i, but I don't get sound from the USB to 3 cinch cables connected to the headphone amplifier. When connected to my Zoom H1 the sound is working fine and when listening back the movies made on the T3i with the headphoneamplifier connected to the 3cinch-usb cable I also have sound.. is there a setting in the T3i for audio monitoring in live view?

  • Thumbed and faved!

  • Hi there, How about the wireless transmitter mic attached on your hot shoe? could tell what kind of brand is that? is it sony? thanks..

  • Hi there, I have a silly question, but I would really appreciate it if you might help me out.. ^^"

    Anyway, here it goes~

Will it work on my T3i (no magic lantern) + Rode videomic pro???

    Thank you very much!!

  • PLEASE ANSWER! I would like to buy a Canon 600D and this is the only things that prevents me from doing that. I don't want to be using an external LCD screen and I heard that if you want to monitor the audio, you won't see anything on the screen. If I will try to plug the headphones this way, will I be able to see what's happening on the screen? Thanks.

  • @TomasCimma did anybody ever answer your question???

  • Comment removed

  • I tried this using the AV cable to my tv but I don't gear a thing. I'm using the onboard mic of the camera

  • So this monitor system monitors the cameras mic, not an external mic you may hook up?

  • @beaverdc7 It monitors the audio being recorded by the camera through the mic/line input, not the on board mic.

  • @onelonedork sorry does this mean that it can monitor the sound from my rode video mic hooked up to my t2i?

  • Comment removed

  • What make are the headphones can anyone tell me? Need a pair of short cable cans for monitoring

  • Pretty cool. :)

  • thanks from brazil

  • Is ML safe for you camera?

  • thanks! you just saved me $300

  • Your videos are great and very helpful. Keep it up!!!

  • I need help. First of all, i´m sorry for my very poor english.

I installed ML in my t2i, and I have done a test with my VideoMic rode pro with the AGC off and noticed that makes a noise early on in the recording.

I think that is the T2i to turn off the AGC and do not know if it's normal. Someone can help me?

When you start recording with the mic is from the early silent or make this little sound at the beginning?

    listen were a demonstration:

    /watch?v=nB77FTU6tyo

  • this is unbelievably RAD

  • will it work with the Sony a55??

  • After watching your video I ordered the Fiio E5 before checking my camera box. The 5D Mark ll does not come with a USB to composite cable, I would have to buy one for about $25, then your video is not clear about whether or not you must have the Magic Lantern firmware or not. So, does it?

  • You can save 10 euros by buying an adapter (Coupler adapter stereo jack female) instead of an amplifier, that means that you can't amplify the sound more than Magic Lantern lets you, though, which is 6 db volume. I found it alright and a cheaper solution.

  • Hi. got exactly the items you mentioned.

Not using a monitor though. When I connected everything the LCD screen turns of and the recording stops. what have i done wrong?

Im using a canon 5D though.

  • what kind of camera stabilizer is that with the handles

  • Hi mate, how do I do it on the 5DII,? it has not USB to composit cable.

  • Yeap! It works, Thanks mate.

  • I bought it, after seing this video, and not working at all. Canon T2I,Magic lantern. nothing ,it does anything at all. Did you actually hear something trhough your headphones or is your voice and you though so.

  • If I don't have an external LCD screen, by using the splitter can i monitor my audio with my headset and the video still show up in the built in LCD on my Canon?

Because usually when I plug in the composite cord, the video cuts out on my LCD.

  • What kind of cable spltter do I need? speaker, headphone spltter? or are all the same?

  • U are my hero !!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 :D

  • Im using a t3i (no ML available) and Ive tried a similar setup using a boostaroo to monitor audio, problem is I dont get audio out through component while filming because its disabled according to the manual the t3i came with. Is the monitoring through component something thats enabled via Magic Lantern? If you know a work around for this I'd greatly appreciate it!

  • You are very knowledgeable and your rig is so pretty. I just bought a T3i, and am transitioning from a DVX100b. I'm anticipating your videos easing the transition into HD video capture. I just hope my Macbook can handle it all. I've heard there can be difficulty editing on a 32 bit color system as opposed to 64. Know anything on this ?

  • I work with a dvx100. The set up is cameras on a stage with a male to male composite av cable plugged into the video out displaying video to a director for live video of a band simultaneously playing. Would a t2i be able to replace the dvx100 by using composite av cables and a coupler to plug into a male video out cable?

  • does the mic work with the usb, rather than the jack

    please reply

    thanks

  • @fingerskatebass Not sure I understand what your talking about.

  • Hey man, I am shooting a wedding with my canon t3i on saturday, and I am a little worry about the overheating problem. DO you know any possible solutions for that?

  • @jcpalacio7 The probably doesn't really come up very much unless your shooting in hot weather. The only fix I know of is to carry 2 cameras and rotate.

  • @onelonedork An experienced DSLR shooter told me that a battery grip add on will keep your camera cooler. We shot with 5D's for ten hours strait and had no issues with the grips.

  • @onelonedork hey i just bought all the stuff you had in this video and hooked the composite cord to the red and white adapter, the adapter to the amplifier and the amplifier to the headphones, but when i plug it into the usb port my t3i turns off and when its already plugged in the t3i wont turn on??!!

  • this is awesome.

i sent a video response with my fave headphones.

    n

  • PS, I use a 7d with no Magic Lantern.

  • @richieramone1 Sorry, there is no love for the 7d. There is a way to set it up with the rode that will work I'll send you a link to the video.

  • Deejay, I'm trying this, and I just don't get any usable volume on the monitoring. It just sounds waaaay to low. or instance, I plugged the Rode directly into the Fiio with Headphones and I cant hear a thing. Only when I speak 1cm away from the mic. I also tried your setup and its just too low. Am I missing anything? I hve the Fiio's volume levels all the way up...but nothing usable in the field. Do you get decent sound? Thanks buddy.

  • Alternate question: I will be recording weddings as a bz. The advantages of having the Canon T2i's LCD off is good for overheating purposes. However, what is the battery life on that cheap Haier $44.00? Will it last 4 or 5 charges? And can you plug it into a socket for charging while it's on with an extension cord?

  • @glennwih Battery life isn't amazing and spare batteries are about $20. You can keep it plugged in and use it while the battery charges. If you need this for a professional work I would consider spending the extra and getting something like the Ikan VH7.

  • I am repeating myself but here it goes. I don't want to use a monitor. I do want AGC shut off. I have a Sony F-V620 mic. It plugs into my Canon T2i directly. I do not have a amp or beachtek etc. If I install Magic Lantern with its' AGC control, can I hear the "good clean" audio via my headphones (Sony MDR-CD60) and have it be the same as the recorded audio on the camera? Headphones are plugged into the camera.

  • @Arcomitry I have the same exact question.

  • What is your guyz opinion for AGC with and without Magic Lantern installed? Headphones model #, SESCOM gear or not and mics? I have a Sony F-V620 mic, Sony MDR-CD60 headphones and a Canon T2i. Thanks.

  • do u have to have magic lantern to make this work. i went to my local Radio shack and got a headphone amp and i cant hear any audio. or is it that only the kind of amp u are using will work?

  • @sixthsensecommercial Yes you need Magic Lantern to make this work.

  • @Arcomitry The juicedlink DS214 might be the way to go for that.

  • One thing I wish you would have mentioned is that you MUST be using an external monitor for this to work, because plugging into the camera's USB forces the camera's LCD to turn off. I just wanted to monitor audio as I carry around my camera with nothing but a little Rode VideoMic Pro, but now I have to pretty much abandon that idea after having already made the investment, or wait until I get a monitor...

  • @Chadfish If you read the info bellow the video you will find a link to vimeo and a fix for your problem. You will also find the note about the screen going black.

  • thats stupid who ever came up with this is smart as hell wow if anyone isnt subscribing to this guy your crazy

  • Two questions, I just got my new 5D (2.08 version) the other day but it does not come with a USB to Componant cord, just a 3.5mm to componant cord for the A/V jack. The manual says you cant run the A/V and HDMI at the same time. So how do you make this work with the 5D? Also, is there a way to display the audio meters on the monitor while recording without installing Magic Lantern? Thanks much!

  • @DannyWinnVideo The fix for both is magic lantern. Or you use the headphone monitor with a sd monitor from the component port. If you want audio meters but don't want magic lantern, then the only way to do that is to use a juciedlink box with built in audio level meters under the camera.

  • @onelonedork Very cool, thank you brother!

  • Wow man. i watched this at 360p and the quality was simply amazing. great image detail :)

  • this doesn't work with 7D.

  • @9ershberg You are correct.

  • hello guy'z,

before " monitoring " why on't you teach/explain how to capture a good sound ?

Unless your all making silent movie :)

ok, I love good sound, is it a problem doctor ? :)

DSLR are not well built for a good sound recording, don't you think ?

  • Couldn't you just add a headphone splitter to the input of the Mic terminal because if its at line level you essential should be able to input the mic on one split, and monitor on the other. then just connect a 1/8-1/8 from the 2nd split to the Headphone amp?

  • @filipinorice Yes but you wont hear the audio recorded, you'll only hear the microphone. If your settings are wrong in your camera you wont know until you check the footage.

  • What if you were to use an HDMI to 1/8 mini jack input. Would the audio translate over WITHOUT the use of the external monitor?

  • @filipinorice Not sure there is such a thing as an HDMI to 1/8 inch adapter.

  • I love your videos! you need more viewers. I subbed

  • Great video. I'm going to try this with my GH2. Just to be clear, you're still using the visual audio level bars to verify volume, and the headphones to monitor quality right? It seems like you can't use the headphone to get an accurate impression of the volume because of the amplifier. Am I right?

  • @TheValuePagesGroup You can monitor peaking and audio quality with headphones. I still use the visual audio meter to keep a eye volume levels.

  • Hey man how long can I record video footage on the T3i. I'm getting my cam nest week

  • @TheChaliWorld The canon t3i has the same 4GB per clip limit that the rest of the canon DSLR cameras have. So your recording length will max out at around 12 mins.

  • Just curious, have you ever tried this method with the "Boostaroo". Just wondering how it compares even though the Boostaroo does not have usb battery charge ability. Thanks;)

  • @DannyWinnVideo Freyguyproductions tried it, and said he didn't have much luck with it. The volume boost wasn't loud enough. He also said that the size of the unit was quit large.

  • I gotta tell ya man I'm really lovin' your videos man! I really didn't want to have to install the Magic Lantern firmware into my brand new 5D just to get the ability to monitor with headphones and it looks like now I won't have to with this cool way of doing it. Thanks for all the great info brother! PS: I don't mind the outro man, just do you;)

  • You rule buddy, Love the positive vibe and I've gotten some great tips. Keep it up!

  • @richieramone1 Thanks!

  • Which program you are using for the edit?

  • @jwr94 adobe premiere

  • Forgot to mention keep up the great informative videos bro. A big help to all the dslr beginners.

  • Not to bash but the ending is so anoying. Jus me little two cents.

  • @tongannewsnetwork No worries. Just my channel branding. I've got to have a little fun.

  • @tongannewsnetwork I kind of agree. I would say shorten it up. I have seen that way too many times. BUT, great vid's keep em coming.

  • @threeque I'll put together a new outro for you guys in a few weeks.

  • @onelonedork , don't you hate the whiners! It's a good outro, just long in my opinion.

  • Can't do this without Magic Lantern can you?

  • @JoshuaBeeLoved I believe you are correct.

  • Great video, man!

  • hey thanks for this, it may just be what im looking for, but i need a bit of help understanding fully. I am interested in purchasing the cheap monitor, with all of the audio equipment shown in this video, but im not sure about one thing. Does this sound amplifier which you show in this video enable you to monitor the sound from an external microphone. also can i just point out that the link in the description says 'fim' not film, looking forward to your reply!

  • @RedSpectrumPictures Good Catch! Sorry about that. This amplifier allows you to monitor the audio being recorded by the camera from the camera. If you have a microphone plugged into your camera you will be able to listen to the mic as the camera records audio. Some of the other options like the Juicedlink DS214 only allow you to monitor the audio from the mic before it gets to the camera. With that method you still wouldn't know if your audio was good until you check the recording afterwords.

  • @onelonedork

ok, so lets say I have a rode shotgun mic plugged into the external inputs on my soon to be 600d camera. with this method which you just showed, i can monitor the audio as i am recording the video. thanks for the fast reply aswell, i have also boxed you in my channel, so i dont miss any of your future uploads

  • @RedSpectrumPictures Exactly. Just remember this is for use with a field monitor. You need either an HDMI monitor or a little composite input monitor (see my dirt cheap monitor video). The screen on the camera goes black as soon as you plug the usb-composite adapter into your camera. If you aren't using a field monitor this probably isn't the way to go. Also thank! I'll try to keep the goods coming.

  • This AGC thing... ..my 60D has manual audio so how does that effect things?

And if I get a RODE mic, will I be able to control the audio levels from the 60D?

And one more thing, give me a short film to make over the weekend ;) No speech just video and music...

I also made another video if you're interested?

  • Thanks a lot, ive been reading the article about the ability to monitor your sound in DSLR but not quite get it until i watch your video

  • 240pizzle

  • @videonevin You sir, are epic. 240pix is a tough watch.
