So one has to wonder how many people are exactly in the NAS. Furthermore, the 'greatest' scientists by unanimous decision worldover are considered to be people like Newton, Copernicus, Galileo, Faraday, etc. who were all believers and many of whom wrote extensively on the Bible and religion itself.

Hola, apenas para aclaración. El celibato clerical fue declarado en el siglo cuarto, pero siempre fue contestado por los orientales hasta el cisma de oriente. Por eso se dice que empezó "de hecho" allá por el año ochocientos. Pero si usted lee San Pablo, puede ver que en sus cartas ya defiende el celibato. Statistics show the more educated an individual, the less likely they are to be religious or believe in a god. 72% of the National Academy of Sciences members have a 'personal disbelief in god' and another 20% claim 'doubt or agnosticism'. 850,000,000 people around the world are Atheist, Agnostic or Non-Religious. That's more than 1 out of 10 people, making up the 4th largest belief group. Less than 1% of the US prison population is 'atheist'. Does make you wonder.

I suggest you type "Christian thinkers in science" into Google, and take a look there, then come back and open your mouth. And that's JUST the people who actually did Christian/Bible related work in addition to the sciences, 95% of the most notable scientists, philosophers and mathematicians are in that last, and guess what? They are all Christian! And let's not forget the Arab/Muslim and Indian/Hindu mathematicians.

I will answer this in several points:
What we have here is the typical philosophical fallacy "appeal to majority" argument. Whether explicit or implicit, you have implied that since 93% of them don't believe in God then majority wins therefore it indicates "smarter" people are unbelievers. What is of course further problematic is the IMPLICIT premise that education in the sciences can help determine the existence of God.

I don't blame God. I blame religion. I don't believe there is such a thing as God. Religion makes people do wicked things they wouldn't ordinarily do. It doesn't make them behave better—it makes them behave worse. You couldn't get people to hack away at the genitals of their newborn children if they didn't think there was a religious obligation to do so. The licenses for genocide, slavery, racism, are all right there in the holy text.

This is all just speculation as there is really no empirical evidence to back this up. Before you claim it's man-made, you have to prove it's man-made, and that hasn't been done, as to do that, you have to disprove the existence of God, and no scientific efforts have disproved God, infact none have even started, because it's not empirically possible. If belief in heaven was private, like the tooth fairy, I'd say fine. But tooth fairy supporters don't come around to your house and try to convert you. They don't try to teach your children stultifying pseudo-science in school. They don't try to prevent access to contraception. The religious won't leave us alone. Conservative estimates say our technology would be at least 800 years more advanced. These fundamentals date from the third century BC and where rediscovered by Newton and Leibniz. In the 17th century. So that's around 2000 years without the math that we now use today in our technological society. We could be much more advance but hey its history now.

What lies in stark contradiction of course to these reports is the intelligence of the scientists during the period 1000 - 2000, since most of the scientific achievements, philosophical and mathematical advancements came then (predominantly from religious people) which seems to either imply that they all lied about their religious affiliation or that somehow they weren't really intelligent.
