@SchmedleyDoRight Actually, I think the band were more into booze than drugs. Sax player Chris Wood basically drank himself to death- He died in 1983.
wow. This (studio low spark) was one of the first two 8 track tapes I bought, bootleg at KMart in about '72, now forever engraved in the grooves of my brain, thanks for this version!! Take a walk down by, take a walk down by-y-y, the river...
No effects? What about the wahwah saxophone in the first part?
Good effects are like more notes that the player can play. Bad effects are like pushing a button on your instrument to make it play a bunch of notes.
Chris Wood was actually a pioneer of effects on the sax. Not the only one, but one of few. There's a LOT of sax effects on Traffic records, especially in the jam era.
Don't think Bobby Keys used any effects, but Ian McDonald of King Crimson certainly did, most notably on 21st Century Schizoid Man from In the Court of the Crimson King from 1969.
Wow, we used to go to every show (early and late) of every night they played at the Academy of Music in NYC. Saw some great and not so great shows but all were epic. This is one of the best.
Wow. What a masterpiece. The tapestry they weaved is just timeless. The real beauty? This was all done with real musicians playing real music. No effects, no guitars screaming. Just damned good music. Impressive.
My dad had the On The Road album in his collection. One day I popped that onto the turntable and began to listen..."Low Sparks" (which ran about 15 minutes, I think) was the standout. I played it about 8 times in a row!!! And it never got old! What am I saying? It'll NEVER get old. We also had the album with "Walkin' In The Wind" on it (the name of it escapes me at the moment). Big shoutouts for the post from a "brother" from Detroit!
to cool man....at the young age of 41 i can identify completely man....i was born just a little to late.....this song is legend. that is an ass kickin stanza. lol i just hope it is a stanza ? lol
To Chanel163, what a rude and crude comment to post. If you like the song or one or more the band members say so. Either you are very young, stupid or just don't have any manners. In my opinion, (not that it matters to you or anyone else), if you want to post those kind of remarks, find yourself a good porn sight and have at it!
Sorry about my wording of my last post, what I meant was that during his years with Spencer Davis everyone thought he was Black because of his voice....again, no offence to anyone.......I just lost my youngest son in car accident 2 weeks ago....and my mind what little I have left of it) isn't really here
Yes, he was with Spencer Davis, but at that time no one knew who he was and that that he was Black......no offence to anyone, even I didn't know....but still loved them anyway
Chris Wood was using a multi effects unit made by Chicago Musical Industries. It was called the Maestro Woodwind Sound System along with the Maestro Boomerang Wah. His sax sounded so groovy. May he rest in peace.
FANTASTIC comment. I've read thousands, and yours is in my top five faves. Because you made me FEEL something I didn't expect. Btw, I pull this lifestyle off in NYC. Visual appearance of the theme, and past substance abuse problem. Thank God we came through. Life is so sweet today, and your comment? I feel you man.....
pewsterbaby--seriously? That is the best comment I have ever gotten back from anyone. I can relate to the past abuse with alcohol for sure--feels good to break through that stuff and all the family BS and finally move on in life, doesn't it? Very good to hear from you. I will look you up when I visit NYC soon, my friend.
What a yuppie Steve Winwood turned out to be. I read an interview with him in Rolling Stone where he said he was embarrassed of Traffic. Sheesh what about 'Roll with it' bleah..
No kidding, I guess there was a reason I quit listning when he wrote Higher love, valerie etc. I kinda thought his solo work was not anywhere as good as his traffic work. Blind faith is, I think, only other good act, with him. That had Clapton, Ginger Baker, Rick Grech also. I agree what a sellout yuppie, lol, rich sellout yuppie.
The music of Traffic is gonna last in my humble opinion. His eighties stuff is just gonna sound like an aging rocker trying to keep up with the times. It sounds dated where as a band like Traffic although a little Hippie still sound hip. If you know what I mean. Check out Budos Band for new music kinda like this.
I do belive you are right. Was listening to Blind Faith @ Hyde park 1969. Was struck how it is still topical today, sound & style, almost 40 years later. Can imagine "college avant guarde" types grooving to this, along with the Dead & Phish, the "hippy" element you spoke of. Will check out " Budos Band " THX
this is soul ladies and gentlemen encapsulated into a 12 min song that could move mountains with it's poetic-like rhythms oh man if there was ever music this powerful these days I'd be shocked! Everybody is just in it for the money these days and not quality yes this band most likely had a motivation to strike it rich but they put soul into their music that not many bands these days even bother considering doing.
Classic performance. Thank you!

If I gave you everything that I owned and asked for nothing in return....would you do the same for me as I would for you?
Or take me for a ride, and strip me of everything including my pride,
But spirit is something no one can destroy...
Singing along! Fabulous. Thank you.
Brings back fond memories.
