  • Are you guys still working on this project?

  • @johnvasgird They are. They are updating everyone on Facebook and twitter.

  • These videos are very humbling.

  • The C approach was right in this case. I like what you did. I was planning to do something similar, but adding an exception class. Are you using exceptions in your engine? I found them to be useful.

  • you guys should make a gay porno...

  • @Wazzup800 ROFL

  • Cant wait to see Marcel's hair line in part 18.

  • Where the fuck did the scripter guy go?

  • u shud mak tutorials!

  • @idifyable you should mae tutorials*

  • @TompanX huh?

  • @TompanX *make. lol :P

  • what happened to ur series

  • I am making a game and we will mostly be using lua and if u would like to help u need a webcam Skype and oovoo and I am kinda new to lua but I gave made quite a few battle engines and such and I am 13 so if u r gonna be dick cuz I am young then don't respond and we need a graphics person and shit

  • I'm still a little noob in Game Development, but I needed a level editor for my game/project and Marcel's Qt Level Editor inspired me to make my own.

I think I'm 40% done, but I won't know until I finish and make it, and the errors punch me in the face.

How'd you go about it? I'm trying to work my way with re-implemented QTableWidget and QTableWidgetItems.

  • Proposal 3#:

Have a Abstract Base Debug Class with a DC and QT implementation, Use static (compile time) polymophism.

Pass a pointer to all classes which need access to the debugger (or if you are lazy use a global).

Faster and cleaner code than both of your solutions.

Besides why do you need a different Debug System on both , can't you just use the std I/0 (either the C++ or the C version)?

  • @thecomputergurukid Yeah, uhm. You realize that by using an "abstract base debug class," you are using RUNTIME polymorphism by definition? And we need a separate one on both, because one is being displayed to the terminal and one is being stored in an internal widget for later viewing. And no, passing a pointer that must be run-time polymorphed to a base debug class to everything using the debugger is not faster nor cleaner than either of the proposed solutions.

  • @GyroVorbis My understanding of polymorphism's definition is that it just means having multiple implementations using one interface which does necessarily have to be done at runtime. You can use templates to do compile time polymorphism by having an 'abstract base class' which has a template parameter of its implementation. I did not mean use virtual functions.

  • @thecomputergurukid The term "abstract class" is reserved specifically for a base class with at least one purely virtual function. You're right, it could be done with templates, and that would be "compile-time" polymorphism (although I'm still going to have to disagree with "passing it around manually to everything requiring it is prettier"). You mixed run-time polymorphic and compile-time polymorphic terminology.

  • @GyroVorbis yeahh ummm did you get the memo for the tps reports?

  • Dreamcast? They still make games for that? I guess not, it's been a year since their last video.

  • @IronLaw883 They are still deving this game

  • This chapter was awesome. Please make MOAR!

  • NICE,I WANT TO MEET IN REAL LIFE SOME FRIENDS WITH SAME MOTIVATIONS AS ME SO I CAN MAKE A PROGAMMER TEAM AND MAKE GAMES,THAT IS MY DREAM!

  • So.. now new videos..?

  • NEED MORE :O

  • I would love to just hang out with you guys and see you work, you guys really are an inspiration to what i want to do! Props!

  • Damn! Just finished watching all the 77 videos on the channel, I should probably go back to working in my pizza-eating lizard game before you guys make another video and steal away my dev'ing time. I'm looking forward for Elysian Shadows to be complete, please finish it so I can buy it =D

  • @lapidations Soooooo... which one was your favorite?

  • @GyroVorbis I really like the tutorials, and episodes 12, 13 and 14 and probably some others I can't remember because I've watched everything pratically in a row. I like when you explain things in the whiteboard, and when unexpected things get caught on camera, and when you guys do random shit, like that mario clone in 15 and marcel drinking that orange shit. I don't like it very much when it looks like you've planned everything that's about to happen.

  • @GyroVorbis I just spent hours watching your Adventures in Game Development series. I liked back in the day when it was just Falco, Peter, and Marcel hanging out on the weekends making a game. That being said Marcel and Falco have come a LONG way over the years from making null to today. Excited to see any progress in the coming weeks, months and years. Best of luck to the entire Elysian Shadows team!

  • See the thing is this is proposal #2 and marcell's a dipshit xD

  • Make MORE NOW!

  • Make sum more !!!!!!!!

  • MOAR

  • Continue the series please! It's Great!

  • When are you gonna start making new videos again? Soon I hope.

  • Have you guys been developing the game and don't want us to see that part? 'Cause the last time you had a big space like this you were working on the game.

  • how do you guy like your 13"? do regret not getting a 15"? im in the process of saving for one and I can't decide which size to get...

  • i'm 14 and i understand everything they say, f yeah i have no life

  • @WrestlingFanUploader lol i wish i understood at least MOST of the stuf f they say

  • Hey are you guys using the DirectX API or SDL?

  • @Autumn6

They are using SDL for window management and OpenGL as the graphics API. And the dreamcast is a whole different story.

  • I'm so jealous...

  • it looks like Marcel aged alot over the course of the video series lol

    no offense ;)

  • @XxKrNaGexX aged sideways haha

  • C is God's programming language! lol.

  • between the bitter tones and the thick jargon I feel like I am the doof sitting in the corner drooling.

  • @AproposOfMe Don't feel bad, sir! I'm a former programmer BioWare and *I* didn't even know what they were arguing about! =D

  • @Autumn6 I take it we didn't introduce the issue at hand very well. XD

  • @GyroVorbis lol. Well, C++ scares me to DEATH! I'm from the old-school. C all the way for me! Haha!

  • Watching this video puts how much you need to know to program games into perspective

  • I use these guys as both an inspiration and they are just hilarious btw have you considered editing the software so it works with the iPhone os?

  • @GyroVorbis Keep up the good work! I can't wait until you release it. :)

P.S: Where did Peter disappear? =/

  • @pubby8 You are hell of a retard.

They are making a game, THEIR GAME, their OWN game and they are DOING IT THEIR OWN WAY. They can do it however they want to and they can work on it HOW LONG they want and if you don't like it, FUCK OFF and don't watch these videos, go and think and do your own games with your own fucking style. GTFO!

  • Very cool guys!! Keep up the good work.

  • 1. I've been watching your Videos for about an hour and a half.

    2. The entire time I've been watching them, I've been Intrigued, and have been laughing my ass off.

    3. Where do you guys live at?

  • @PkpMeDiC Haha, thanks, man! We live in Huntsville, Alabama. (US)

  • @GyroVorbis pkpmedic Erm ever heard of crazy people?

  • Your whole series is very inspiring, and clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's great that something like this exists on the internet to give people an idea of what game development can be like. Keep up the great work, and I think i speak for all your fans when I say thanks for the inspiration and motivation.

  • hey what do u guys use to make your pixel art

  • Can't wait for the game! if i was you guys id have it put on the market for Xbox360 PS3 and Wii's online marketplace...and dreamcasts too B) if it still works...

  • Nice to see some updates.

  • Hey just wanted to let you guys know I've been working on video game development, and I got to say you guys have inspired me. Love your series, and I've been keeping up with the all the episodes since day one with "game development part 1" Great job guys keep it up! and if you guys ever need help with audio tracks for your games, hit me up because I have lots of experience in electronic music. You guys rock, and keep me and my friends laughing over here in Alaska.

  • Can i work with you guys ? :D

  • @pufixas lol :D

  • Love the work guys, keep it up! Dont let these internet ninjas keep you from finishing your engine :D

  • I want to be a game programmer some day. :)

    Good luck guys.

  • I notice that some of the team are c# programmers. Is this the route you are going down now, rather than C++ for the PC version?

  • it looks kool i like that it will run on a mac cause i love programming on my mac windows gives me a headache and I think it will be really cool playing around with the engine when its finished keep up the video and good work

  • These videos inspire me to learn more and more about programming, I think it's so interesting watching you guys begin with virtually nothing and create this amazing game using only a compiler and your brains. I'm currently getting familiar with C# because that's what we're using for my intro programming course in college. I don't know whether or not it's a good idea to start trying to learn C or C++ right now. What do you think?

  • Since about 2 weeks ago, I first found your AIGD-Videos and enjoyed from that day on every evening a few chapters to call it a day! Im a computer engineer / Software Developer myself and you guys are really great and I`m totally enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and plase gladden us with a lot more chapters in the future!

Man it`s almost like I know you guys. Please say hello to Marcel, Peter and the rest of the ES-Team...

    Best regards

  • @CordellCP3 Haha, thanks man. It's always encouraging to hear comments like this. We're always humbled that people find us interesting enough to watch our Adventures from the very beginning (even I can barely watch anything prior to Chapter 12, haha).

  • @PicklePumpers

LOL Mr Back in my day

"We used to make programs in Assembly and debugged 0s and 1s with magnifying glasses!"

  • falco is fucking extreme debugger! :O

  • What program do you guys use?

  • @1234Mindgames Their not using programs their writing programs.

  • @1234Mindgames Oh dear.

  • Fucking awesome as always.

I saw a "warez " partition on someones drive. lol.

  • lol every on was a sleep

  • So are we not going to see Peter in any future chapters?

Is he permanently out of the project?

  • where is peter???

  • "I really have no idea what we're arguing about, but I feel bad for Marcel, so I'll vote for him" Lmfao jokes stuff xD

  • @Marcel, "Oh my god, bring the camera over here look at this!"

  • What happened to Peter? D8

  • It's been SOOO LONG! lol

  • hahahaha look at falco @ 7:02

  • Good job guys. I was kinda worried about the whole joint operation of elysian shadows team and dual threat studios, but you guys pulled it off seamlessly :D

  • "Dude, I was at the Ballmer's Peak three beers ago."

  • @iamawesometoo i started laughing so hard at that bit

  • Gods programming language is C++ :).

I have been awaiting more episodes of AGD for a long time. Im glad its back.

  • @Ghotherkill.... yeah thats a good point... where is she?

  • @MrJC1 if you're refering to kendall her and falco broke up, dunno why

  • Wow has it really been a year in a half? To me it seemed soooooo long!

  • Epic ending! :D

  • PicklePumpers is fat.

  • ROFL! "When you have an opportunity to program in God's programming language, you do it."

  • Excellent video yet again, inspiration to all indie game developers. Great props and looking forward for more.

  • Excellent video, entertaining throughout, and goddammit! I even learned a thing or 2! :D

  • Wow Marcel and Falco are pretty good. :)

  • Coding drunk :) You guys are great!

  • i dont know why you guys are doing these 2d games lol. i gotta watch these movies...

  • @PicklePumpers You are a wanker.

Go back to your atheist group and get some backup.

You aren't a real atheist. You don't know what you believe otherwise why do you need to join the group for support.

Try coming here to argue instead and you'll get trampled.

  • That was funny man. I wish I was in that team. Great spirit.

That's what I look like at 6 every morning, and I wake up at the crack of Noon!

It's hard when you're alone, not a tenth as fun as having such a team.

  • Great episode. I only caught on to your series last week. Watched just about the whole thing already as I've found it inspiring to listen to you guys while I work on my own game. Have to admit I'm not a real programmer and watching this makes me wish I had gone into CS in my school days.

  • @PicklePumpers Seriously dude you have shown your ignorance enough. Have you even watched the other episodes??? How about you fuck off back to stuck-up-my-own-assville and stop bothering ppl about things you don't have the ability to comprehend.

  • Comment removed

  • Whenever I seem to be lacking inspiration to code, another one of these seems to pop up! Looking good guys, keep it up.

  • @PicklePumpers ...what in fuck's name are you even babbling about? Our entire development process has been iterative and "agile" by nature, Mr. high and mighty.

  • @GyroVorbis I lul'd

  • @GyroVorbis

Grow up. I've watched a few of your videos, and from what I've seen, you've basically wasted an immense amount of time rewriting things that should have been thought through the first time.

  • @pubby8

It's exactly because they've grown up that they have rewritten the Engine/Editor/Toolkit so many times. The original Engine was written in low-level C for just Dreamcast, then they rewrote it in C++ to bring it to the PC too, then they rewrote it to integrate with Lib-Gyro and to bring it into the PSP as well. They've rewritten it so many times because their entire viewpoint has changed so many times since the start of the Project, not because they didn't 'think it through'.

  • @BiomassStudio I was refering to them being immature over every negative comment they get.

Also, you should choose a platform(s), choose your libraries, and finish your goal. If only duke nukem forever listened.

  • @pubby8 You have clearly never worked on a large project before. Choose your platform, choose your library, finish your goal? What are you, twelve? Technology changes, targeted platforms change, and as you get older your goals change. Obviously software development is not as linear as you would like to believe. Ever heard of Agile or Iterative software development? Y'know, that paradigm that massive companies use? I can't speak for your own maturity level, but I can vouch for your ignorance.

  • @GyroVorbis Ditch the arrogance, especially since you don't have much to show for a game.

Plans that large companies use doesn't mean that they work for 2 guys screwing around. Watching 5 minutes of your videos quickly reveals how unplanned your work is. And besides, companies know their inteded platforms before they begin. An artist doesn't begin a project in colored pencils, and then try to add in paint, and then later try to make it work for pastels.

  • @pubby8

A kite flies on a string, not a stick.

You have to develop a game so that it can go in almost any direction they want at any time.

  • @pubby8 .... there's just.... so so so many things wrong with your post to point out.....

  • @pubby8 I really love when comments like this come up. This comment has so much ignorance spewing out of it, it's not even worth Gryo responding to. Go watch their videos from day 1 and come back and look at your comment, you will probably shit your pants in amazement. After that, if you still believe that this statement is even .001% valid, then it's pretty obvious that you are truly the arrogant one.

  • @AspireToDoItAll

It's been 3(?) years with a handful of people, and yet their game still isn't close to being done. This so far is following the path that duke nukem took - one rewrite after another. If you look at other indy games, it's pretty clear that these bozos have the wrong idea about developing.

  • @pubby8 I've been nice to you until this point. You really need to pull your arrogant head out of your asshole, bro. We have developed an entire component-based engine (a Unity2D), an entire integrated Toolkit for developing with the engine, and an entire multiplatform library to power said engine on any platform that we damn well please. If we were to quit right this minute, we still have quite a bit to brag about. If you want to be a cunt and judge us "only as an RPG," go right ahead.

  • @GyroVorbis

Yes Falco, you have quite a bit to brag about, but you don't need to come on here and complain everytime someone doesn't look up to you. Sure, maybe he is under rating the project, but people are going to be doing that all the time. Quite frankly you come off as being very stuck up. Calm down.

  • @Jorbz150 It's not about bragging rights, it's not about disliking criticism. It's about people completely mischaracterizing the nature of our project then judging us based on incorrect assumptions. If he had realized that our end-goal was, and always had been to create an Engine, Editor, AND Game, then bitched about a lack of progress on all three (acknowledging the R&D component of the project), I would have shut up, because that would have been a legitimate criticism.

  • @GyroVorbis Okay. I suppose it is possible that you have a condition in which you find it troublesome for someone to misunderstand any thing in any way, but I think you could calm down a little bit. It is one thing to defend others on the team, it is another to brag about yourself.

  • @GyroVorbis

"It's about people completely mischaracterizing the nature of our project then judging us based on incorrect assumptions."

I believe that could be called straw-manning.

  • @pubby8 It really shows how little you understand about the actual engineering and science behind a project such as this. You're judging us one dimensionally. FURTHERMORE, considering the fact that the engine was rewritten just this summer AND we are only now starting to get heavily into storyline and content development, our actual "development time" is more like 6 months. Fuck off, bro. We're doing our thang, and we're going to do it the way we want to: from scratch.

  • @pubby8 Dude, you do realize that this is an Engine, and the game they are creating is using their engine... the three years you spoke of was mostly (if not all) development on the engine and editor. Again, if you had been following these guys from the start, you would have already known this.

  • @pubby8 Our product is an entire MULTIPLATFORM SDK (Toolkit + Engine) AND an RPG utilizing it, you incompetent, ignorant moron.

  • @pubby8 The amount of subscribers have been rising steadily, so they are obviously doing something right, and I would think they know their audience better then the criticizing keyboard cowboys.

If guys like you would shut the hell up the "internet argument issue" would be non-existent.

  • @pubby8 your an idiot pubby you start out defending people being assholes then you turn into one when all gyro did was explain why he was mad to you. and really after five times of telling you there making an engine a toolkit and a game to show off what the engine can do you should get it by now. people like you are no help to them because you have no idea how hard it is making what there making. so how about you encourage them instead of be a dumbass.

  • @pubby8 To be honest i agree with you.I mean you heard of the Touhou series right? for 14 years, the entire series ( it's game series ) has been made by one guy

every one calls ZUN ( he japanese ) and he's brilliant. All kinds of characters( all female except one guy ). And my knowledge of C++ is quit sharp for a guy who constantly reviews his stuff. But your are right,if you GOT IT, you GOT IT.

  • @GyroVorbis This is just a question out of curiosity. Do you guys have cable? It seems you guys are working really efficiently, and television (Cable) is probably a big factor in that. It's for personal reasons.

  • @Soap360 Nope. We have no cable TV.

  • so after watching the 4 vids i have a question:

judging from the video the 2 new guys seems like theyre just working in their own projects (Unity3D) , if so whats the point of working together? its not like you guys are even sharing code or anything, in any case it is fun to have lots of ppl join your dev sessions

  • @EvilNando They are making their own project using Unity3D. And the Elysian Shadows team is making their own thing.

  • this was the best episode of adventures in game development ever.

  • that looked like QT creator.

  • lol falco.." get the fuck away from me"

  • C++ != C;

    C++ > C;

  • Hey guys, am I the only one who can't watch the first video? wtf?

  • @Kosake82 hehe, welcome to germany, some youtube user flagged it and google beeing awesome make it unable to watch this way, you have to search for a proxy or use the unreliable hidemyass

  • @Qualia Thanks for the hint. Who the heck flags a funny and educational video?

  • really nice episode!

  • "Hows Project Root?"

    "All passed out"

    LOL

  • ballmer peak is from that XKCD comic right? blood alcohol concentration of .1337

  • I liked the deving at 7:05 haha.

  • 4th

  • "I have no idea, what we're arguing about, and i feel bad for marcel, so i'll vote for him" :P I really enjoy seeing some new videos from you guys :-)
