This seems like a great camera except for the dumbed-down menu. With all the info pop-ups throughout the menu, it would be easy to label things properly and give an explanation of that function. An example would be the function "background defocus" which should be labeled aperture.

Do you really have any use for the pancake if you have the 18-55? Yes, the pancake is smaller but the only difference in focal length is 2mm.

@QLsk8er Yes. You can see some videos on Youtube of it in action. Actually, it's an auxiliary lens that fits on the 16 mm lens. They have another wide angle auxiliary lens available as well. I think the the quality of both is pretty good.

Two things he didn't mention that I think are really important features: It continuously auto-focuses while shooting video - something no DSLR will do and very nice to have. (and why I bought one). It also does Auto HDR - recording three exposure levels and then applying a scheme to make one shot that contains the whole exposure range. These are some of its greatest features and should be covered!

i have to admit i just got the A390 sony the only difference is that it doesnt record video and that its biger i love my camera but i have to admit that having a smaller one would be easier for me to take more pictures.... Every time i stand next to my camera thinking to my self and planing to my day to see where will my camera end up :P lol

But i still want High quality performance i dont mind that the ISO button is hard to find but does it still provide High quality performance like the A390?

I'm a film maker and i use this and my nikon d3100 for my shoots, however, if i wanted to do profesinal films that i could take to festivals or have for general realse. I would stick to my d3100 soley because that does 24p where as the nex5 doesnt. If there was a firmware or hack that allows the nex to do 24fps (or 25) then i would certianily have it around for profesinal shoots

I need a camera since new year eve is coming soon. I want to record the fireworks.

I'm also interested in gardening - taking pictures of flowers . I find that my old camera can't seem to capture the red colour accurately and when I tried to take picture of a rose bush, there's just too much sun glare on the blooms.

Any suggestions which camera I should buy? Sony Nex-5 or Canon 500d - both about the same price. Thanks in advance.

Don´t buy that SHIT of camera! I bought one on Singapur in my honey moon and back at Spain i tried to return to Sony.

They didin´t take me serious and i have to sell it for the half i payed...

"3x zoom" doesn't really tell you anything about a lens. A 100-300mm telephoto lens is also 3x zoom. It's better to know what the focal lengths mean.

Let's say you're shopping for a compact digital and you want good wide angle possibilities. The camera could start from 35mm (to 105mm) focal length, which barely qualifies as wide angle or it could be 24mm (to 72mm) which is quite nice. Both can be advertised as 3x zoom, because they both are.

@jubbing there is no 55-200 lens. There is only the 18-200 lens, 18-55 and 16mm. Course you can pay the ~$300 adapter and mount Minolta or Alpha SLR lenses....

I just bought one. Dual lens kit. 18-55mm and 16mm. Have not really tried it much, just in the shop. I like compact form cameras but the photo quality, particularly in low-light settings leaves a lot to be desired. This device changed everything. I respect and admire DSLR users and pros. Perhaps in the distant future, when I have more time for myself, I may switch back. For now, I will use the NEX-5. I need to save up for the 18-200mm. That will add a significant amount of options for zoom shots

I'm about to buy a DSLR camera. I'm studying graphic design and I was asked at photography class to buy a Reflex. the one teacher suggested was a Nikon d300 or a Canon EO5, but I saw this piece of beauty and I'm curious to know if this NEX5 will do the same as a normal DSRL???

@ericko666 It can do many of the same things and pictures a similar quality but it is not yet a viable substitute for a pro level DSLR of the kind you were asked to buy and there are only a couple of lenses available. In your situation, having been asked by your teacher to buy a reflex camera I'd do just that. If you can't afford the D300 or EOS 7D look at cheaper or even used models.

love this camera! purchased the dual lens for $900 AUD and I also bought the fisheye lens. the picture quality is great as well as the HD vid. my only issue is the battery life....drains quickly. although I managed to purchase additional batteries online as a back up. just wondering though, will they release like a side grip with this? it would be good ;)

I love the idea of this camera and I am seriously thinking of taking the leap... but...one of the appealing features for me was the fact that it has a mic jack so that I can record video using a quality mic. However you just pointed out that this is Sony's proprietory jack so I would have to purchase their proprietory mic. So my questions now are:

1. How much is this mic?

2. What is its quality?

3. Is there an adaptor for a standard 3.5mm jack available and how much is it?

if they had made the pancake lens anywhere around 16mm-20mm but with a f/1.8 i get it right away. 16mm f/2.8 is nice but i prefer at least f/1.8. i hope Sony comes out with MORE lenses for these.

I don't seem to get the idea of having the DSLR functions on a compact style camera however I find it quite annoying having very little grip onto it and not so comfortable to use camera. As you need to attach all the accessories onto it.

the different between the lenses would obviously be the focal length, and the apperture! the pancake lens is called pancake as its small and flat...like a pancake, lens wise the pankcake lens is awesome great depth of field the other one people just use for the utility of a zoom but the pankcake is the winner to be honest

But this is more a point and shoot than Pro and the proprietary port means it will be just the Sony Accessory rather than a whole new system.

only thing i fear from this, is the battery time, I hate small batteries on Sony's Compacts and entry level DSLRs(A230)
