@Theshamham #1 That's hard to do when you're playing live.
#2 These are much cheaper, and you can get multiple types of distortion/overdrive
#3 Distortion/Overdrive pedals of this style are supposed to give a slight dirt to your sound, and give a volume boost to hit the preamp of your amplifier to to give a heavier drive.
or you could just turn the gain up on your tube amp.. (its a lot cheaper/better to turn a knob up on a good, well worth it tube amp then it is to spend money on dumb overdrive pedals and a crappy ass amp)
not to say some pedals aren't awesome. Everyone should have a wah, and a bigmuff, and a sustainer and all that. But actual distortion pedals = dump.
@Theshamham Well ideally yeah but most people have excellent results pre overdriving their signal with a tubescreamer etc but also they can come in useful for an amp without overdrive, or just generally preferring the tone from the pedal itself..
@Theshamham I think that's the point. A lot of guitar players actually just boost the hell out of their amps clean channel by maxing the level knob of the pedal and add just the tiniest bit of drive from the pedal.
But of course, it's usually not an available option for a lot of guitar players since it would be pretty damn loud (unless you have an attenuator)
I got my BD-2 for 40$ used, best investment I made on gear ever. Even when I have no tube amp to run, I can still get touch sensitive dynamics. At times it can sound thin but there are ways around that. Haven't even thought about modding it yet.
I recommended this pedal to a band member in the late 90's. He disliked Super overdrive and a number of others. Till this day, he uses it with his strat. Maybe also with an old Phaser unit. I don't have one, played it, it sounds nice, but I always end up getting something else louder. So I guess the Blues Driver is a special pedal with that will suit a certain player, who maybe likes cranking out CCR, Bad Company and stuff like that.
as a player who doesnt often use effects,im not much impressed with the toe ticklers.probably 'cause im more a jazz guy,but the guitar, the clean tone, and the technical chops are superb. put that skill in a pot with some neckbones and you want need seasoning. very, very good sir
@millerkyle8887 Id start by using the settings on the pedal listed there. I have a BD-2. I use it to boost the signal for soloing. level all the way up, and the gain adjusted to taste. it works. :D
never thought id say this but better than tube screamer

@Theshamham I'm afraid i'd only agree with you when it comes to the digital sounding pedals like the Boss Metal Zone and Digitech Death Metal.

@samathanwataguan idk dude.. this pedal seems to just slightly overdrive your amp. U shoudn't need a pedal for that

The BD-2 is the best Boss pedal in my opinion. A very versatile pair for the set: BD-2 + SD-1 just amazing and not too expensive.
