It isn't about the EZ way of doing things in the wild, Its about self reliance and knowing that if and when the time comes he can do for him self, with out the lighter or match
Skills we all should know
And the hand drill is one that I have yet to master
your coming along lil brother. Might I suggest a couple of things? Picking your nest up in your hands will help...you can spin around so the smoke isn't in your face, and if you position so the wind is blowing towards the coal it will help. The second one is try using the same wood for stick and board, because they have the same hardness. Just friendly advice, hope it helps.
whenever you see that small red glow, you stopped blowing at it..just 3 more second of breathe each time and i think you could have gotten it..but i think you did great....
I find when blowing a coal into a flame it helps to have something behind the tinder. Birchbark, or some leaves. It acts as a heat reflector, and insulates your hands so you can blow the coal hot enough for ignition. I've heard from old timers that they'd roll their tinder around their coal with a birch bark wrapper. Then they'd whip it around in a circle instead of blowing on it. I've never tried it however. Good vid man.
oh ok, hey u know i saw a video that teaches u how to make learning the hand drill much easier, just type, the hand drill made easy on youtube then click the first video that comes up.
I have used that method. I actually started that way, but found it uncomfortable.
After a few months doing it everyday, it becomes easy to generate the pressure and speed required without thumb loops. You are free to spin much more each time, where as the thumb loops inhibit movement.
This year I will graduate to the 'floating hands' method, applying pressure while moving up as well as down :)
oh, so do u think i should start with or without thumb loops?, its pretty awesome that ur going to be able to apply pressure while going upwards but why do that?
I think they both have more balls than any of you. Eat some day old zebra raw, or a salmon that was killed by an eagle and is godknows how old before you start to complain about either of them.
that guy who said les stroud is a sissy is out of his damn mind. les is the real deal...bear is the fraud. great vid, that stuff sure proves it's not as easy as it looks.
I see a lot of people actually pick up the tinder nested coal and blow on it - perhaps that gives it more oxygen from all angles instead of keeping it on the ground while cupping it too (which might apply in a really windy scenario?). Also, perhaps next time it might be better to blow from an upwind direction, that way you're not eating pure smoke. :o)
You beat the crap out of Bear Grylls and Les Stroud. Those guys are sissies. You do all your stuff yourself, and learn as you go and don't act like you're in the middle of nowhere with no one else around when meanwhile there are seven differnt camera angles, many of which are from the place the guy is trying to go to! Your advice about the lighter is great. Bear Grylls says he carries a flint and steel or whatever and he acts like everyone should carry one.
I have to agree. I would give anything to learn from Les for a month. I am really a beginner I think. I just try to share what I learn with everyone. Stuff that is really important to can be applied immediately.
I do think that anyone who doesn't have a good amount of 'actual' survival training/experience (not just videos and tv) is a fool not to carry a lighter.
My brother brought me back one of these from a tribe in africa. It was my first time using it today. My first try i got the embers glowing but they went out in my tinder.
One thing though. Pick the tinder bundle up in your hand. leaving it on the ground and cupping it with your hand cuts off the oxygen. Hold it loosely in your hand and blow smooth and long. Good job though. 2 big thumbs up.
i was about to say the same thing. I've had them fall through but thats quite rare for me. The tinder can suck up moisture from the ground too so thats another reason to keep it above your head.
Congrats dude. Handdrills are HARD. I have never done one successfully and it is one of the things that I want to accomplish. Do another video explaining what you built. type of wood, counter weight, everything. That knowledge would be very valuable.

Great job on getting the coal, this is not an easy skill. The tinder was not on your side this day. Great job.

i think i see why it took so long..
it was when you were blowing in tinder..

I wanted to master the hardest way.
Also, it's more comfortable.
Teaches you to find the best materials.
You don't need cordage!

I have lost the coal through the tinder bundle picking it up several times.
This way takes longer but I believe is safer. Losing the coal and starting over in a survival situation is just not an option.

Hi
My brother brought me back one of these from a tribe in africa. It was my first time using it today. My first try i got the embers glowing but they went out in my tinder.
Now all i get is smoke.
Can you give me any tips
Lewis637 4 years ago
What materials are you using for drill, board, and tinder? They are all different in their own ways.
But if you really want to know how to do this, you should get supplies out of the woods where you reside.
survivethewild 4 years ago
That is the outside inch of the "trunk" (very important, limbs are too resinous) of a big fallen red oak.
TIP: if you are in an area with "true tinder fungus", use that as fire board. Mullein, cattail, or other pithy drill should do the trick.
Practice is everything.

mate you made the hard part look easy and the easy part look hard

That sort of luck I'll take!
survivethewild 4 years ago
wot kind of wood are you using ? i prefere this method of fire making to a boot lace bow. any other tips you could give would be good

At the end of the video he explained that. :o)

what is that 'chuck' that you made thereo you drill? thats real inteligent.

I'll try to get a video up explaining it this weekend, since people seem interested.
It was an idea of my own though to fit its function. I didn't see it elsewhere.
survivethewild 4 years ago
I am very interested in how you make that as well. Can't wait to see the video.

I know that would work quicker, but I've had my coal fall through and disintegrate before and had to start all over :(
So now I just take the longer route and build my coal bigger and bigger first to be safe.
