Great technique, clearly a pro, but this piece by Mr Kampela doesnt convey art or music to me. If contemporary music doesnt need to give u feelings (says Faaip0de0iad) I wonder if it's music at all. Art's nothing without feelings. I don't know the score, but it might well be written as rhythmic patterns, letting the fingers of the player fall randomly on the fretboard, pitch out of the equation. Many of the patterns would sound equally "contemporary" whether played 1 fret up or 2 down regardless
@JazzScene - Fair, thoughtful commentary, but "Art" is not necessarily something that evokes "feelings" - look up definitions (I quote): "the products of human creativity", "the creation of beautiful or significant things", a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation", "the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses". Moreover, isn't posting a comment here clearly the product of some "feeling" (even if not positive).
All pitches are precisely indicated in the score, and if you really think that no feelings went into composing this piece, you should see Kampela himself playing it (and making it look easy). Few composers are capable of expressing themselves so efficiently and directly when playing or writing for any instrument.
Amazing piece and guitar player. This is contemporary music, which means it doesn't necessarily have to "breathe" or have phrases or give you feelings. If you want that listen to classical or romantic composers, as easy as that.
He has some great ideas, but no musical structure. I mean, it really wouldn't matter what chord he goes to next. It would sound the same. I'll have to use the same liberating approach to my own playing, though, it's just that I'd hope to retain some sense of musical integrity as well. Great ideas here! ~j.
Some people are missing the point here. This is not a "song". It's a percussion study for the guitar (as per the title of the Piece). It's a demonstration within context and with continuity of various techniques developed for percussive use of the guitar.
What a tedious song. The drumming added nothing to it. 'Jon Gomm' will show you how percussive techniques can compliment a song rather than just be flashy gayness with his song 'temporary'
mrevilpants - Thanks for mentioning Jon Gomm. Never heard of him so I checked out that song "temporary". Absolutely an amazing artist. Looking forward to checking out more. Thank again! ~j.
Ha! I was worried for a second there that Artjul was coming back for more! Thanks for adding to this argument thread, it caused me to reread it and laugh out loud with Joy! (Check out Thomas Leeb (The hard can) and Erik mongrain too. They both write songs rather than percussion studies. All the best.
For the people who don't like this, maybe you should try to listen for what he's going for rather than what you expect to hear.
