This recipe is great and innovative, thanks! I also like to get pure, organic vanilla powder from this place called love street living foods--it has no additives and works great in my recipes :-)
Typically 1 inch of vanilla bean corresponds to 1 t. of extract. If your bean is 8 inches long, assume this batch of approx. 1/4 c. to provide only 8 servings of the equivalent of 1 t. of extract.
Since 1/4 c. contains 12 t., dividing this by 8 amounts to about 1 t. of extract being 1.5 t. of powder. I made this recipe and even found this to be a bit weak. I needed at least 2 t. of powder to give what I thought was the taste of 1 t. of extract.
is it possible to just grind the hard dry vanilla bean instead of mixing it with the buck wheat groat? I would rather have PURE vanilla powder flavor. Why not just grind the dried out vanilla beans?
@Marcoosianism yes but the bean is only moist and sticky like a date when you first buy it but what if i dry it out in the sun, hydrator or warm oven until it's rock hard? Wouldnt that make it grind better now that it's hard and brittle? When i make a dish that requires vanilla I just don't want the taste of buck wheat groats in my recipes. Thats what im trying to avoid.
thank you so much for sharing this recipe. since i'm muslim, i can't use vanilla extract because it usually has alchohol, and i can't find the powder in any store. thank you so much!!
Great idea. I've been getting vanilla powder from Sur la Table and discovered that it has maltodextrin. I can't wait to try this method.

@bethal1998 - because the bean is somewhat moist and sticky, like dates. Grinding the pod alone will produce a sticky mess, if it even grinds at all.
Using the powder gives the bean something to mix with and the moisture to adhere to allowing it to "dry out" and grind better.
