I wouldn't say this is th egreatest match ever, but definitely in my Top 5,and Steamboat happens to be in 2 of those with Ric Flair. They both had umpteen house matches so I'm only basing this on the PPV matches I had seen from '89.
These two delivered what is arguably one of the greatest matches of all time. The referee getting up and down so many times from making a 2 count. Wrestlemania 3 is still the one wrestlemania in my mind that stands out to me the most to this day. Plus the much anticipated match between Hulk and Andre. 93,173 fans. UNBELIEVABLE!
Such an incredible match. These two had ill chemistry in the ring. The stock of Wrestlers today couldn't do a quarter of what Steamboat and Savage did on that night through their whole careers.
to bad wrestling is nothing like it was in the old days. back in these days they put effort into wrestling now you can tell they dont even hit each other.....and its all just show now its harder to get into
One thing (among many) wrestling is missing today is great announcers. Ventura, Monsoon, Heenan, Lawler (before PG era), and even Vince was better than all these guys today.
i agree. The announcers the WWE has add no excitement to the matches.Vince and Ventura were my favs.Good guy bad guy always made me giggle. Helps having announcers that actually wrestled b4
This is a time in wrestling when wrestlers were not afraid to work stiff. That running elbow by savage against the dragon's face was very stiff, no way that was fake!!

I heard that there were 200 moves scripted to be done and i don't know but Steamboat says that every move was done. Truly great match.
Comparing it to todays matches where there are less then 50 moves in a match (and they are not shorter) would be insulting to this match and both Steamboat and Macho man.
The beauty of it all is that this match wasn't expected to steal the show, although most purists knew even then that it would be nothing short of a 5 star match.
This match topped wrestlemania 3. One of the greatest matches ever. This is when wrestling was still entertaining. It wasn't a soap opera with 3 moves and a finisher.
I remember watching this when I was a little kid. That's when "pro" wrestling was entertaining! Nowadays there is no character development and the same crap always seems to happen.

hey loser go bother somebody else. im having fun. you have time to waist in your life writing others in a negative way. so champ you know what you can go do now right ?? ???? ???????? .lol
That's a weird statement considering Savage is perhaps the only person, well and a few others, completely blacklisted from Vince's company. He has let bad blood go many times for the fans, i.e. Warrior, Hogan, Nash & Hall, and Bischoff.
If that is true, then that explains why him and McMahon never mended fences, even professionally. The Randy Savage 3 DVD set was a sure cash cow for WWE because of his fans and that's why Vinnie Mac released it.
the way steamboat handled himself at wm25 was fucking amazing. i couldn't believe he still got it after all those years. the current stars have absolutely nothing on him. cena, batista, watch and learn from a true legend. can't believe guys like him and hennig never got wwe title. fucking politics.
Steamboat surprised the hell out of everyone when he got the tag from Snuka and leaped to the top rope and proceed to kick ass. I remember my friends and I said "whoa" together when he was still able to perform at that level.
A shame The Dragon was never able to make it on the top of the WWF Food Chain at the time.
The WWF was too much "entertainment" orientated while he was a no non sense character and performer.
The NWA and then WCW were just that, "wrestling" orientated fed which push as great main eventer and his feud with the nature boy and also the late Rick Rude are legendaries.
I don't think this match is the "best ever" , it's among "the best matches ever", I don t rate one match above anyone else
@LiveForMyMoment What do you expect when you have Hulk Hogan pulling Vinnie Mac's strings?Hogan created a glass ceiling for mid-card talent even during his first WWE stint.
Lmfao! Steamboat has got in the ring twice at what 65 or something. Everytime he's got in there, he has me giggling because he actually kinda still has it. I didn't expect to start leaping around. You can tell when athletes don't have it anymore because you saw Snuka. He obviously didn't belong in there. I was beginning to get worried about him when Jericho had him in his finisher but Snuka impressed me. He even generated a fan response yesterday of 'you still have it' in the All-Star tag match

this match here, was voted the greatest wwe/wwf wrestling match in history,of all time!!! man i remember this match as a kid and i was like WOW! im 28 now and i can see why it was voted the greatest wrestling match in wwe/wwf history...damn good match!
Yeah man you're right. In the 80s and 90s the IC title was WORTH something. It was the belt that said "Someday I'll be World champion because this title makes me that damn good" but now its like whatever. I'm surprised it hasn't been phased out.
I was watching the match where Savage took the bell, and smashed Steamboats throat. Really thought that was the end of Steamboat's career. Both of these guys were great wrestlers.
Steamboat's theme was played (for the first time I believe) during Macho Man's title defense against Animal Steele on 1/3/87- Saturday Night's Main Event ...when the Dragon came out during that match!
he had the theme "sirius" by the alan parsons project. it was just such a low recorded theme in the studio itself by parsons and his band, the roar of 93 thousand drowned it out mostly.
I think Flair v Macho Man at WM VIII is better than this match. Not only was it a great match, but the story of Flair having Liz's photo and the title and Macho trying to defend his woman is perfect. Not to mention Monsoon and The Brain were amazing on commentary.
Gives me chills just thinking about the crowd pop for Macho's entrance....Epic.
I was at the WM 8 match with Flair and Savage and awesome as it was to see live. Not as good as this too much happening and interference in the Savage/Flair match. Except for one instance with George Steele this match was a one on one classic. Savage won the Flair match also by grabbing the tites and cheating as a FACE!
I agree with the person who posted this video defintely my favorite WM match of all time. There is only one other techincal match that I could put up there with this and that is WM 10's 1st match Bret vs Owen.
Andre was in horrible pain the whole match with his back, Hogan couldn't work a good match with anyone. Steamboat and Savage were both in their prime and both amazingly good workers. To each their own.
Agreed 100%. These two guys were the best in the biz, and Hogan was not really working at this point. Andre could not work, so it's not his fault. Savage/Steamboat was an all-time classic and one of the best WrestleMania matches ever. I say it is the best.
I remember watching Ricky Steamboat in the 80's when I was a kid, & just now I thought "Hey, I didn't realize that Ricky was dressed up as Ryu from the Street Fighter arcade games." Then I looked it up and Ricky started being called "The Dragon" and wearing a Karate gi way back in 1985, and the first Street Fighter game didn't come out until 1987. So did Capcom copy Ricky with their Ryu character? With the white gi and red headband he looks just like him, & Ryu is the Japanese word for Dragon!
too bad that edited out ricky's original music and substituted with this cheap stuff. but when it comes to cheap, there you have vince mcmaggot-er mcmahon
Good match. I dont know about best ever. Malenko vs Guererro ECW, is a classic. This match had good psychology. In order to declare the greatest match, you need to broaden your scope of the business ie. psychology, technicality, execution, working the crowd. Also, if you want to see some great matches, watch the Super J Cup. If you are a true wrestling fan, not just a wwe mark, you will appreciate it.
Pretty good seats. It has been a while since i was at an event, and was able to actually sit down and enjoy a show. Do you guys follow any indy wrestling or just WWE. There is so much more out there. Try Ring of Honor, New Jersey All Pro, Hybrid, Velocity Pro, Maryland Chamionship, just to name a few. Feel free to email me and talk wrestling. I will give you my opionions from being on the inside of the business.
well flair was a little better worker then savage(again, a little)so that is why flair/steamboat wasa bit better. unfortunately, the flair/steamboat matches had to come with the self-righteous commentary of good ol' jim ross
Huh, that Steamboat is the best Ryu cosplay I have seen so far

Yeah man you're right. In the 80s and 90s the IC title was WORTH something. It was the belt that said "Someday I'll be World champion because this title makes me that damn good" but now its like whatever. I'm surprised it hasn't been phased out.

monsoon and ventura were better than jr and the king

I'd rather Monsoon and Heenan, but you're right.

I was watching the match where Savage took the bell, and smashed Steamboats throat. Really thought that was the end of Steamboat's career. Both of these guys were great wrestlers.
drakos365 3 years ago
Steamboat's theme was played (for the first time I believe) during Macho Man's title defense against Animal Steele on 1/3/87- Saturday Night's Main Event ...when the Dragon came out during that match!
MrConservativeGuy 3 years ago
A true classic, who could ever forget this as Steamboat heads to the Hall Of Fame at WM 25.

Hmm I don't remember The Dragon having an entrance theme on this ppv.
HotBoy147 3 years ago
he had the theme "sirius" by the alan parsons project. it was just such a low recorded theme in the studio itself by parsons and his band, the roar of 93 thousand drowned it out mostly.

Wrestling hasn't been the same since Jesse Ventura left.

I agree with the person who posted this video defintely my favorite WM match of all time. There is only one other techincal match that I could put up there with this and that is WM 10's 1st match Bret vs Owen.

Hogan- Andre was better.
johan861 3 years ago
Gonna have to disagree with you.
Andre was in horrible pain the whole match with his back, Hogan couldn't work a good match with anyone. Steamboat and Savage were both in their prime and both amazingly good workers. To each their own.
mwutz 3 years ago
Yes andre was in pain, but he still managed to stand up and look like he was the better man.
And hogan was a great worker in his matches in AWA and japan, and also in his match against the ultimate warrior.
johan861 3 years ago
Agreed 100%. These two guys were the best in the biz, and Hogan was not really working at this point. Andre could not work, so it's not his fault. Savage/Steamboat was an all-time classic and one of the best WrestleMania matches ever. I say it is the best.
patg316 3 years ago
Steamboat is one of the most under-rated wrestlers of all time. If you have seen this match and the matches he had with Flair, you'd understand.

Ricky Steamboat will FINALLY be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year! Go Dragon!
PhockUTube 3 years ago 3
short and sweet.... this is true wrestling. a story told inside the ring!

I got the original match on VHS. Hopefully early next year I can post this on Youtube for all the WWF fans on here and around the world.

I recall my sister and I being in the 4th row. That was my birthday present and she took me there to see this great match!!

I will give you my opionions from being on the inside of the business.
tbixler420 3 years ago
this match was the best ever, as you don't have to be a wrestling mark(or a wanna-be wrestling anaylist)to realize that

Flair/Steamboat 3 ppv matches were all better. This was a 4 3/4 match Flair were all 5 stars.
NWAfan 3 years ago
well flair was a little better worker then savage(again, a little)so that is why flair/steamboat wasa bit better. unfortunately, the flair/steamboat matches had to come with the self-righteous commentary of good ol' jim ross
breannaelliott1 3 years ago
Flair was more than just a little better. At this time savage was working maybe 180 dates a year Flair was doing 380 matches a year.
