it are .aac files, they are the only extension or codec the dsi can recognize. Convert them by using the super converter for example. Its really good.
you need a program called quick media converter to convert any music files into acc format, THEN you place all the files into the folder[the dsi can read 100 songs per folder, so it is recommended you use folders] then just add the folder straight to the sd card
