The best fiction writers are those who can craft characters and plots that are undeniably real, even though they are a product of the author's imagination. Richard Yates was one of those people.
As an English instructor, I must say this is one of my favorite books. It's full of human tragedy; it rips your heart out - which is the mark of great writer. Yates dialogue was used verbatim in the film. That doesn't happen very often. Thank you for writing this incredible exploration of the human spirit, Richard Yates. Your work resonates in my classroom.
Okay, I've been to Paris, and, with all due respect, just, to point it out:
Paris is a goddamn shithole, everything is overpriced, nobody speaks English, and they still act like Napoleon is out for world domination. For everyone to be "alive" in there, the rest of Europe will have to be a graveyard.
Just pointing it out. If you want a city where people are alive, try Dublin, Copenhagen or Glasgow... Maybe Amsterdam, although people are a tad absent-minded... for obvious reasons.
Ah, I'm sorry your highness, I suppose my ignorant simpleton mind couldn't take in the beauty of a self-inflated aristocratic nation souley based on trend-sucking snobs who would even eat their own shoes if it was recommended by the right magazines... Yes, because I am that blatantly stupid. It's not like I had a genuine impression since I'm too dumb to base a proper opinion in a country I visited. So no, I find their culture as tasteless as their edible swamp animals!
@TheFacelessActivist Wow that's one of the most ignorant things i've ever read. Nobody speaks English? Can you speak French? Spanish? German? Arabic? When people who don't speak your language come to your country is it right for them to complain? Also Paris is one of the most vibrant diverse and ALIVE cities in the world. Maybe you just weren't looking in the right places, next time avoid the super touristy bits and look for the real city. Or go to Glasgow and get stabbed, your choice, cunt.
...Really? France is arrogant and mediocre. They still think they're in the times where they had Napoleon leading them. They're more overrated than any Vincent Vaughn movie, it's a capital for self-centered yuppies who likes to pay more money for crappier products. It's a national embodiment of every superiority complex around. It have had nothing new to offer for the last 300 years, it's a bunch of ungrateful and xenophobic pricks. Now go back into your delusional hipsterverse...
Blake Bailey's A Tragic Honesty is a brilliant biography of Richard Yates. If you're a Yates fan, you should read it. It's both heart-breaking and inspiring and lovingly crafted.

@TheFacelessActivist with all due respect, I think Paris is pretty amazing. I can imagine how ignorant simpletons would disagree though.

His daughter's comment at the end is the best quote in the whole piece.
"If you really really do the best you can, and do what feels right to you, and you do it well, then that's something nobody can take away from you."
Great words to live by.

This really works i tried it 1. Cover your mouth with your hand
2. Make a wish into it.
3.Close your hand (make it into a fist)
4. Hold you hand(the fist) to your heart for 5 seconds.
5.Send this to 3 more videos.
6. Tommorow will be the best day of your life
