I wonder if there can be a game where a cell phone, you dial a number would link you to another world? ehh how do you charge it then? You would need an address book...
arround part 6:10 the "Strata Vision" is also a machine in the Sequel Riven. There is a machine that actually does exactly what they are talking about.
@TheWayofTheStickman There's actually something very similar in Myst as well. Right at the beginning of the game you can witness it. It's just that it extrudes an entirely different landscape.
I remember watching this when it came with the original game. Oh how I love Myst! It is so magical! Playing this game is like zen, I don't know, it's amazing!
this guys are the closest to god the make a living world with su much content Fuck George lucas this shit is greater them the freaking Lord of the rings people are so mind closed that they dont dare to enter this world and explore it
@robduude agree this work of art should bee experience by everybody even if they dont like it ,something like general culture, just to open his mind to a world of ideas...
Is this still being produced for that later os systems, if not is should be, great introduction for students as an introduction to interactive multimedia.
@kucoru16 No doubt. Makes you think about today's tools with realtime interaction with fully-shaded objects and environments while you work. Today there's just no excuse for sub-par 3d design. ;)
I think myst games were so wonderful and incredible that we're( the fans) looking for more a lot of year later... Personally I'm surfing the web searching for videos and music. Myst was a part of my life. I will keep all the collection 4 ever.
What's interesting to me is that with a smaller budget, the developers of Myst trounced the game offerings of larger companies, such as Activision's Return to Zork.
its interesting to see the Real Myst graphic which is a real time rendering graphic, is better than the original Myst which is a pre-rendered one.........
of course, the person which is me would say these kind of crap, is because i didn't live in the time of the first Myst, sure it was a great graphic impact to those who played it when it was the first released. did play Mummy: tomb of the Pharoah though when it came out.
This movie shows how brilliant two guys were at a time when computer didnt have gigabytes and gigahertz. The made a fantastic (its really almost perfect) game with a small amount of tools
There were six Myst games beginning with Myst in 1993 and ending with Myst V: End of Ages in 2005. I played them all. Many - me included - believe Riven was the best game in the series, but without Myst, there would have been no Riven. Myst set the technical standard for computer games. After Myst, shoddy graphics and weak storylines became anachronistic.
Despite my usual Mac-hating, I have to say, out of my 4 copies of Myst 1, the Mac version was superior to the Windows version. Yes, I have 3 other copies, one broken, one working, one masterpiece edition.
Also!! Does anybody know what happened to the original traveler from Myst 1? He falls into the abyss in Riven, but is there any acknowledgment of his fate?
I always thought that the star fissure sent him/her back to their own world, and that they kept in touch with Atrus and Catherine by sending letters back and forth. If you watch the intro to Myst 4, you hear Atrus reading a letter he wrote to the traveler that mentions the events of Myst 1.
Ahh ok. I stopped playing after 3 so thanks for the info! I always felt a slight sense of being jipped once Riven was over. You went through all this trouble only to fall into an endless abyss, but since traveller returned to his home, that clears that up :)
I heard about this game in a documentary then found it at a Value Village for about 4 bucks and I played it for what seemed like forever on my old laptop. I'd love to buy it for my ipod so I can kill time at school.
This game.... Oh my,, Favorite ever! Riven, Exile, URU / to Dn'i & Path of The Shell (all merged together) is great as well. The music and visuals will give you that same strange isolated feeling that's so attractive.
PLEASE BRING BACK MYST ONLINE !!!! PRETTY PLEASE!!!
The first ever computer game I was introduced to by my high school teacher, we took turns playing this during recess breaks... never again will exist such a revolutionary and serene game. We solved puzzles in class...
I almost cry when I see this. I was young back then, I'm 18 now, but wow. after playing all the myst games as a great fan, seeing this is just..amazing.
wait can anyone tell me why myst is so good. i cant wait to try it on the ipod touch but i need to know why people said that this was one of the best games until 2002. PLZ REPLY!!!
well since you insist....myst like most successful videogames gets its popularity through depth of environment and ease of immersing the player into the digital world. the atmosphere is so lush and well designed that it is a total escape from reality. the graphics, music, and puzzles are all outstanding, but one thing you should know is that this is a cult following type game, and may require you to take a few days to appreciate its beauty
@proghead7 Maybe for some people. For me, it took about 1 second to appreciate the beauty and awesomeness of Myst. Hell, the intro video and animation of "flying" to Myst Island, in 1993, was enough for me to be just completely awestruck and COMPLETELY STOKED. :)
It just totally absorbs you so much that you forget where you are. I was playing myst 3, and my mate tapped me on the shoulder and I just jumped a mile lulz!
Also, no other game in existence can make you genuinely overjoyed, curious, sad or even afriad ( The age of Narayan D: ). No other game can keep you thinking about it in school and work.
And finally the characters are so real, and if you've played through all 5 games you genuinely feel for them.
I have to admit, this game it an ultimate creation in itself, its like perfect world captured in a game, including the magnificant beauty of creation and the music is out of this world =D just thought id let you all know.
The idea of the train in the Spaceship Age by one of the Myst game designers came probably from seeing the animated character Flounder in The Little Mermaid.
People may argue with this, but I see no reason why the first 2 Myst games, and the 3 books shouldn't be placed among the best for video game storylines of all time. (I don't see how there could be any legitimate competition, and if you dare mention Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid I can point out to you 100 quotes that will make you cringe in disgust at their cliché-corniness.)
I agree completely! It's no secret that the creators of LOST based it largely on the first MYST game. The cannon for games 1-4, and even Uru plus the 3 books is really amazing. And it's groundbreaking as one of the first truly multimedium stories created. We take for granted what Heroes is now, but MYST blazed the trail.
I'm a bit sad they haven't written a 4th and final book.
Right! I played Myst III recently and I really overlooked the story in it. I've never played Myst IV but plan on very soon. I actually played Myst III so long ago, and was biased because I remember it not being made by Cyan, but going back and playing I feel they did a phenomenal job with it. It's a shame Presto couldn't survive to make more games. Excited for Myst IV now after playing (and being hugely letdown) but Uru. I honestly couldn't bear to play with those controls for more than 5 mins.
I don't really consider them cliché at all when compared to other video games. Yeah maybe if you compare them to the history of film and literature, but at least they have something fresh and new to add to the video game industry.
The game that still inhabits my memories. There really was no better game out there in 1993 for PC. Just LOOK at this game in its context. In 1993 this was the most revolutionary piece of multimedia art in existence. I am only sorry that after Riven the games kinda went downhill, as did the adventure genre as a whole. Without Cyan's seriousness, and Lucas Arts' lack of, games may be very different today than they are.
COSMOSABRAVO - you posted this video - the sound is very, very out of synchronization at most points in the video.
Its great to see older stuff like this posted. I am shocked they didnt use 3D Studio for DOS to make the game, it does have a limited detail that I think 3d Studio would be more realistic.
I used 3DS DOS and AUTOCAD in those days when that game came out and I've nearly forgotten the HORRIBLE time to wait for the PC to DRAW a single wireframe window view. Terrible stone-age days.
You know, I wonder if during the early stages of development, if they got completely frustrated (and nearly gave up?)... Seeing a scene load after 3 hours+ then implimenting it into the game as one frame has to be very depressing, especially considering the idea hadn't really been capitalized on during that time. So it was really a risk to waste all those hours rendering the game frame by frame, a risk I'm sure they weighed in on considerably during the course of the development.
This is something I read on a gaming forum. Someone asks: "I need info about RealMyst. I have Myst, what's the difference?"
Here's the answer he got: "I don't know, I played it and... except for the 3D environment, I found no difference. Maybe a hidden Era, but I never found it. Everything is exactly like Myst."
ROTFL! What a noob! I bet that if someone asks him "What's the difference between Megan Fox and the Pope?" he'll reply: "I don't know, except for the gender, I found no difference."
RealMyst is the best. I originally played Myst (the Saturn version) and I couldn't understand what was so great about it, it felt like a number of unconnected postcards, where you click on a random spot on a picture and you switch from a postcard to another.
Some time later, I tried RealMyst. Let me tell you, RealMyst ROCKS! It's absolutely immersive, you really feel like you are in this other, mysterious dimension with strange machines, and you can move around freely... it's absolutely great!
I will say this time and time again. I Loved playing this game.I wish I still had the games I would play them over and over. These games had a lot of value to me and always will. I wish there were more games like this.
@xoterimillaox I like to recreate MYST Island in the most living and breathing detail possible on Unreal Engine 3, which is one of the most powerful 3d engines available.
I played MYST some 10 years and are completely obsessed with everything about it. Im experienced in UE for 10 years
I wrote Robyn Miller but haven't got any answer.
Real models would be very useful for original proportions
This Entire Series Rocks!, the books are great!, Uru live is asome even though its goin down in 2 months,,boo!, but dude u r sooo lucky to live next to the greatest ppl ever and that made the greatest history and series ever
So who was the inventor of height-mapping? They kind of talked about it like it was a totally original idea, but I wouldn't have guessed that they made it.
I like the part when they were talking about make the pre-rendered seens. Wow these guys really were ahead of there time I making this game. I play this game, and I still think this is the best video game ever made.
The amazing thing that none of these haters seem to realize is that a good chunk of this game was done by these two brothers and few other friends. Keep in mind the year was around 1992 and the state of the art in personal computing was the Pentium 90 MHz. What they accomplished is nothing short of amazing.
This brings back memories. It's not an Easter Egg, though. It was also part of the PC version. I believe the "making of" was a second CD in the package.
this is an actual .mov file from the original mac version, it just went out of sync when i uploaded it. I'll upload a new version sometime when I feel like it.
Just finished the game!

Compare this to how game makers make a game today:
-Use the same game engine
-Use half the same weapons
-Add graphics update.
These fucker's did everything from scratch, and made the best game of an entire century.

Well, they used Macintosh computers, so they used StrataVision 3D (today known as Strata 3D).

It's absolutely immersive, you really feel like you are in this other, mysterious dimension with strange machines, and you can move around freely... it's absolutely great!

you lucky punk! who is he? i would have loved to have taken part in the production of Myst
bioman10154 3 years ago 3
@xoterimillaox I like to recreate MYST Island in the most living and breathing detail possible on Unreal Engine 3, which is one of the most powerful 3d engines available.
I played MYST some 10 years and are completely obsessed with everything about it. Im experienced in UE for 10 years
I wrote Robyn Miller but haven't got any answer.
Real models would be very useful for original proportions
I would love doing that

We play Myst 4 in my class.

This brings back memories. It's not an Easter Egg, though. It was also part of the PC version. I believe the "making of" was a second CD in the package.

Yeah it was on the pc version as well

it's out of sync as I believe this is the easter egg found on the old PS version of the game (afaik) and that was horrendously out of sync too..

this is an actual .mov file from the original mac version, it just went out of sync when i uploaded it. I'll upload a new version sometime when I feel like it.

Could you upload the actual .mov file to Megaupload and give the URL to that in the description of this video?
