  • A word about this - two wives are allowed in the army; any of you who remember your days in the army will recall the quartermaster's standing joke when issuing your kit: "two wives are allowed in the Army".

    The other wife was an item described as a housewife - a sewing kit consisting of some needles, thread, spare buttons etc.

    This was the zenith of humour!
