Please, what is this trick often seen, with this arpegiator ( here seen with the pro one ) , and tweak the sound based on this, à la Tangerine Dream .... i'd love to have it automatical like in this video ! and change the notes with he keys ! can you tell me please ? ^^
Also, do you program this arpegio before ?
i'd like to do it with my emu II ( from a cubase midi plugin i guess ? ) or with my D50, TG77 .. or with a jupiter 8 soft version.
@josh4rock It depends on how you would like to use it. For versatile waveshaping, short loops, gritty sounds treated with an awesome analog filter, this beast can do magic. But the limited sample RAM of just 256kB and having to save everything on dd 720kB floppy disks, which are getting harder to get a hold on these days, this is probably not for you. If you find one, check if the floppy drive works, or else get the FD drive replaced with an HxC floppy drive emulater, which works on SD cards.
That is some seriously expensive gear back then. Fantastic video. It's true what people here have been saying. You can keep your virtual stuff, this is the real deal. Electronic music is about improvisation, not so easy to improvise with a mouse....
@neonelectro Thanks. Actually, in those days, analogue synths were considered 'outdated' and most musicians switched to digital workstations, such as the Korg M1. An Elka Synthex was available in stores with 90% discount of the original price. So although you are right about the amount of expensive gear I had is quite impressive, back in the early nineties it wasn't such a big deal as it is today.
@wallymeldrum As a matter of fact I have heard of a midi keyboard mate, I've been using them for the past 6 years as I myself was a software based musician. My point being that you cannot improvise as well within a software based environment as you can with dedicated hardware. Having recently gone back towards hardware I've found my workflow to be much more spontaneous. I am not criticizing software, but after having gone back to hardware I find working with software to be a bit clinical.
@Paya1980 Jazeker. In Krimpen aan den IJssel, om precies te zijn. Exacte datum is helaas niet bekend, maar het zal ergens in 1990 of 1991 zijn geweest (datum in de titel klopt waarschijnlijk niet).
@Envergure Thank you for your remark. I'll be more careful adding text to my videos next time. (I know it's a lame excuse, but please excuse me for not being a native English speaker/writer.)
@Envergure Not an oxymoron at all. A live recording is a recorded event that was not edited from several sources and not made using several takes. Recorded live.
I guess you want to know which of the synths have dissapeared? Unfortunately, the Synthex and the Riha organ have gone. I miss them both :-( but I've got some great other stuff instead :-)
Good point. Sure I had heard of midi at that time, and I already owned an Amiga 500 at that time (I don't think I had a midi interface yet). But for improvising you'll be surprised how much fun it is by just keying in some sequencer notes and keep everything in control of your own hands instead of the computer's.
@studio35d i'm sure it's so much better this way, and i would like to experiment it just the way you did ! if only i knew what arpegiator you used, manualy, it would be so much fun ! please let me know how to achieve this ! ^^
@keef69 Sorry for not replying you earlier. I was in China for three weeks and it seems impossible to access YT from there. For the Pro-One sound in this video, I've programmed it's internal sequencer (just four notes, probably C3-C3-G3-G2) plus a carefully set up delay with the Roland DEP5. The sequencer was manually transposed with the Pro-One's keyboard with my left hand. I don't know if there are software version that can do the same trick, as I haven't tried it with VSTs.
@studio35d thanks ! no problem ^^ . yes i fell in love with this machine thanks to you !! i really need one but they're expensive now ... or at least, finding the same kind of sequencer/arpegiator to control my emu II simply, or an analog module i may build which may sound a bit like the pro one .. yes, controling the sequence with your left hand in real time, with this kind of sci fi 80' sequence , i love it ! . i thought about recreating a pro one with a specialized guy, together. we'll see
It's called "Sundown at Sonoran Desert"... Actually, it never had a title before, but now you mentioned it, I think this would be the most appropriate title.
The Pro-1 had a delay on it, as you have guessed. By pressing the keys while the internal sequencer is playing, the sequence is transposed to the pressed key. In that way, you can change the sequence notes in quasi real time.
Hé René. geweldige video. Lekker retro.
I read that the Elka Synthex was very underated because most musicians at that time believed a organ company couldn't really make a nice synth, but from what i've heard and read about the instrument it blows alot of the other competitors away with it's packed and innovative features.
Brilliant. Sounds like Tangerine Dream. Sounds very like Tangerine Dream from the early 80's. Love the sound of that Pro-One's sequence. What made me laugh was the load of 3.5inch diskettes. Reminded me of the 80's, when you needed tonnes of them. We had a QX5 FD sequencer, a Yamaha TX16W sampler, which needed loads of diskettes if ever you wanted to do a live gig. And then your Atari 1040St running cubase too. Oh how technology has moved on !!! Still, give me those gorgeous old synths anyday.
I'm sorry, but I failed to buy any soundcards for the DDD-1. Indeed, the sound is very crunchy, and some of the internal sounds are practically useless (handclaps sound as if it's a broken sample). I still have it.
you had every synth that every one wants in 1 room....great vid
