I have done this in winter too. Had to walk over the Dore Pass (crampons and an ice axe were required) to the start of the track. No other access that time of the year. Also had to carry a boat on my back so I could get over to Milford from the end of the Track. Walked out on the Milford road and did not get a ride until I had been through the Hommer Tunnel. Some guy felt sorry for me and said there was avalance danger on the road. Was a good trip.
It was one of those inflatable boats with oars. I was on my own. The Dore pass was challenging, one slip and it would be a fast trip down. I did not see another soul on the track. This was about 20 years ago. Milford has got a lot busier since then.
Hi, we were there early October. One hut was really cold so suggest take several layers of warm gear and wouldn't hurt to bring small amount of dry kindling for the stove in case there's none when you arrive.

Sounds like a memorable trip and your boat must have added a few pounds. Were you on your own?

I hear it's really busy in summer time nowadays but we didn't meet any others in October either.
