  • 3 people want to kill Cruithne like they did to pluto!!!

  • In Tune with nature :)

  • I was thinking of next week doing a vid.

  • All object maintain their places in the Solar system because they are moving under the influence of gravity.

When you watch about 1:30 you can see that in action with Cruithne's orbit as it flies higher and then lower around a point which is moving at the same speed as the Earth.

The Spirograph lines appear because they plot Cruithne's orbit as seen from the Earth. Viewed form the Moon the effect would be quite dizzying to behold, especially condensing 770 years into a minute or so.

  • Cruithne? They should have called it Spirograph.

  • i made one of those in kindergarten with a spiralgraph! god copied me!!

  • tbh mother earth sure can juggle

  • It is more like debris or something.

  • wow ,cool dude 2 moons

  • Its not Earths moon.

If the Earth vanished, it would still do its thing.

    Its the suns annoying blow-fly.

  • Altman 1337 's link explains this from an unimpeachable source.

It has to be Earth's gravitational influence causing this motion, otherwise Cruithne would obey Newton's First Law and fly off in a state of uniform motion.

Also there are many moons of Jupiter which orbit both ahead and behind. They are referred to as 'Trojan' moons.

Viewed from Jupiter, as is this movie is from Earth, their orbits are even more confusing than Cruithne.

  • @astroras No, they are called trojan asteroids, not trojan moons.

Pluto and Neptune are in orbital resonance. Is Pluto a moon of Neptune?

  • @astroras Well then how does that explain Cruithne maintaining its orbit when it's on the opposite side of the earth, with the sun between them? Earth's gravity isn't strong enough to cause its motion from that distance, surely?

  • For those screaming "it is not orbiting the Earth; so it is not a 'moon'; from NASA's website : science. nasa. gov/ science-news /science-at-nasa /2006 /09jun_moonlets/

you will have to remove some spaced to get the URL to work.

  • it only appears to orbit the eart

  • It's stuff like this that makes my head dream. I know all the problems... this thing isn't big enough to use orbital swing... fuel penalties... No reliable life support... on and on.I'm imagining a habitat like the Bigelow company makes a launch....couple of extra boosters on initial launch... maybe just deploy in Leo but keep it's final rocket attatched? If that quick launch space gun sending up all the volatiles? Could get there and back less than a shuttle launch costs? !st man to the 2nd Moon

  • lol;

    that is so cool

  • @TheCosmicGypsies - i said the vidieo is bollocks, not the infomation within the video, i know all about the surrounding planets the second moon blah blah. And if you knew what i did for a living you wouldnt be telling me i need to get off my arse! Oh and just so you know wiki actually supports your video, so if you bothered to take a minute chill out sit down and read wiki you may find some people know there shit....oh and the orbit of cruithne on your video is wrong!

    thanks!!! ;)

  • Comment removed

  • this video is bollocks

  • @robbo2186 - And what exactly is 'bollocks' about this video?

Maybe if people bothered to get off their arses and do some research (not wiki, that is full of disinformation) they would discover a lot more about the universe than what we are told.

You can't expect people in power to bring you truth in any way.

  • Its not actually a moon, but a "quasi- sattelite" which means semi, it orbits the son, but crosses earths path.

  • @TheCosmicGypsies

yeah wiki sucks...YOUTUBE is way better.

  • cool!

  • Moon or no moon, that's one of the coolest orbits I've ever seen.

  • False. Look it up. Cruithne is not a moon as it doesn't orbit the earth. In order for an object to be considered a moon it must orbit a planet. Cruithne and the like orbit the sun.

  • I thought the same but discovered that the professionals have never give any definition of a moon or satellite.

Indeed, the Trojans moons/ satellites around Jupiter follow as strange orbits as Cruithne and it's ilk.

After the Pluto planet/ not planet farrago we probably won't ever get any guidance we can use sensibly.

  • You are incorrect. The defintion of a 'moon', i.e. a satellite is an object that orbits another object. In the case of a 'moon' the object must orbit a planet. Cruithne doesn't orbit the earth, hence it is not a satellite nor is it a moon of earth. Look it up. Wikipedia clearly states that Cruithne doesn't orbit the earth. This same statement can be found on other places on the web as well.

  • (continued) I look it up again and found out the reason fro the confusion. From earth's surface, Cruithne appears to orbit the earth, however if one were to look down upon the solar system from far away it would become obvious that Cruitne actually orbits the sun, only sharing earth's orbit at times.

  • And wikipedia's always right? It says 30 days of Night was directed by an American, when he is actually a scot.

  • @astroras Pluto never should have been considered a planet in the first place. And yes, the professionals have given us plenty of good, sensible definitions. So quit your whining.

  • Flase. look it up. It does orbit the Erath. Get it right next time

  • It doesn't. It actually orbits the sun. I looked it up, thanks. FYI: In the future it's possible that Cruinthe might be captured by the earth's gravity and be a moon of earth for a time.

  • actully, it orbits the earth once every 777 years

  • No, actually it doesn't. It orbit the sun. Please look it up.

  • Now your arguing with Steven Fry!

*Law* Steven Fry is never to be questioned!

  • LOL..the actor from 'Bones'? LOL Anyway, nobody is above being questioned. From our perspective on earth, Cruithne appears to orbit the earth. However, if we could look down on the solar system from afar we would see that Cruithne actually orbits the sun. This said, it's possible in the future that Cruithne may become a real but temporary moon of earth if earth's gravity is able to catch it.

  • yeh that guy...well I stand to be corrected sir. I shall be off for some humbule pie now lol

  • Are you sh*tting me? Are you really that actor or just another person with that name?

  • Noooo! Its Steven Fry who told me there is a second moon that orbits the earth once every 777 years lol

  • cool
