Founding Members of the Drifters Clyde McFatter, Lead Chick Anderson, First Tenor David Baughn, Second Tenor David Baldwin, Bariton James Johnson, Bass Replaced by McFatter, Gerhart Thrasher, Bill Pickney, Andrew Thrasher, Willie Ferbee Replaced by McFatter, Thrasher, Thrasher and Pickney Johnny Moore replaced McFatter in 1955 Big change in 1958 as Ben E. King took over for Moore and added Charlie Thomas, Doc Green and Ellsberry Hobbs. Rudy Lewis took over for King in 62.
@flemit11 Correct, all the founding band members were fired by the manager in 1957. Moore joined later and sang lead on "Under The Boardwalk" and "Saturday Night At The Movies."
the drifters are not under-rated faust mate...my son when 5 (1999) heard me playing them and asked if i would do him a tape for his little player...picked my mother up from hospital two weeks ago and she loved them on my cd...shes 87..like motown any era will dance to the drifters sounds, johnny moore had a sooth, soft but unique voice but it appeared to match his personality, great loss....thanks for posting nasty, take care all
The Drifters together with The Platters made an excellent era of wonderful music, man. Many dudes today try to get their " essence " but this feeling is a-once-in-a-lifetime thing... nothing compares...!!!!
daisysilver; probally johnny and clyde. have u saw aphoto of butch leake on his website. he looks sexier than in these videos. clyde still looks good to. but he couldn't look better . he is to beautiful in these vids. ss08
How I loved these guys. The best line up without a shadow of doubt. Four brilliant singers, 2 very sexy ones! You all have your favourites but I am sure you all know which 2 I mean.x
Loving watching these guys again. I am addicted to these old videos with JM & CO. How good were this lot. I could watch all night even saturday night!
i've looked up all the drifters careers and johnny moore was with the older drifters also. so he was there before clyde brown.he did leave the group 2or3 times and returned.clyde came in the late 60's or early 70's. him and johnny left in 1982 they had returned in 86. after that i find no record of clyde returning but johnny stayed with them.ss08
Some corrections...When Clyde left the group, he went into the service, not a solo career which he did have AFTER he got out of the service. Johnny did not replace him, but joined the group years later. There were many leads before Johnny including Ben E King, Rudy Lewis, Bobby Hendrix, and Charlie Thomas. But I do aggree that Johnny ranks right at the top with the best of them. Class is now dismissed!
im a singer ...and my hero is johnny moore...what a voice.... im white and english but people say i sound like him..."R"john.if you want to hear me i`ll....try and sort somthing out ..mp3 or the like..BIGGEST DRIFTER FAN IN THE WORLD
Clyde McPhatter founded the group in 1952 or 53 and Johnny Moore was the replacement when Clyde went solo. Legend has it that when Bill Pinkney (back-up bass, baritone and tenor)heard him sing in the bathroom he just had to get him. All three are one of my favorites!
I LOVE IT
