i think someone like John Oswald has more insights on this subject than you have or will ever have
this is so funny, someone talking about instruments without knowing the definition of an instrument or even music itself
probable wanted to be a turntablist but just couldn't do it himself or his little band didn't get any gigs because the people didn't dig it and wanted to see some talented musicians playing their little turntable
and that doesnt say every wannabe turntablist is a musician
My kid hits pots and pans in the kitchen and makes a drum beat. Pots and pans aren't made for music, but when he uses them in this way , they become an instrument. Same thing with a turntable. It's how you use it, and what you get out of it.
huh?...u mean to tell me that if i record a single guitar string stroke into my serato...and from there manipulate that guitar tone and give it a rythem...(just like u would a guitar)...that its not an instrument? if thats the case then a guitar isnt an instrument eather dumb ass... do your homework/research next time son so u wont make yourself look stupid in front of the whole world!!!...by the way...did i mention that u were a dumb ass!!!

you just made yourself look stupid by making this video, your poor edits, sound quality and fades show a huge lack of a film student. How do u define art? using sony vegas or i movie to edit videos.. ye i can tell..lol
well, all instruments allow us to create tunes from previous records. Putting samples has been a large part of rap music as well as pop. You learn to create as you learn to play, while the turntable itself doesn't seem to be a musical instrument, it's more difficult and requires more creativity than guitar, drums, piano or bass ever did. Your intertwining 2 songs, instead of just playing one.
While I could belittle u sir 4 bringin up an interestin topic & makin a very valid argument 4 it, that wud hav me appearin ignorant & greatly underdeveloped as a human being. So, Kudos 2 u intelligent brotha 4 bringin 2 light the true rifts in our consciousness that limit our full understanding of what we luv . lets think first. If turntables aren't an instrument. Y does it sound dope? What is it really? This guy loves turntables... how else would he know where all the djs and shops were at?
Your an idiot. Do you even know who came up with the term turntablist? A musical instrument is an object constructed or used for the purpose of making music. In principle, anything that produces sound can serve as a musical instrument. scratching a noise isn't musical. LISTEN TO KID KOALA, CUT CHEMIST, DJ SHADOW, DJ NUMARK, DJ PLOVE, AMON TOBIN.
being a turntablist requires way more skill, practice and time than playing any instrument! record any instrument or sound and dj's can manipulate it to sound like an instrument and create sounds that even the best musician can't with that musicians instrument! trip on that u dumbass
You know what, everybody that wants to argue if it's an instrument or not. Search up "vestax controller one" or even search "vestax qfo". That should answer everyone's question so we can all go on with our lives until the next dumb ass drama question comes along.
in all actuality a turntable is not an instrument. It's a device that needs an audio source " a vinyl record" to play prerecorded music. It's not an instrument. Believe me, I have turntables and a mixer, I think I would know what I'm talking about.
all instruments have their "prepared" sound....take a guitar, play it and you will hear the sound of the guitar, you don't make the sound! the guitar is the sound!! and what about an electrical keyboard? you can put every prerecorded sound you like and play it.....so thats not an intrument? just human voices are instruments??
I'm just saying that's my opinion about it, I personally don't think it's an instrument. For instance you have three people one has a drum set one has a piano and one has a turntable, but here's the important part, the guy with the turntable doesn't have a record. Then what is he gonna do with it? That's all I'm trying to say.
thats too much theory....imagine "you have three people one has a drum set one has a piano and one has a turntable" but the drummer doesnt have his sticks, the man with the piano doesnt have his seat (or his hands) and the guy with the turntable has everything he need........thats weird krunk!
so, please explain me the difference between a turntable (as an instrument) and a guitar for example
Well, playing a song on a turntable and using scratch vinyl are different. At the most basic level, the turntable plays another person's music. It's no different than a CD/mp3 player (which can also be used in turntablism now). As soon as a DJ begins to cut, mix, and scratch, however, the turntable becomes a type of sampler. Is sampling considered music? Yeah. You cut up beats and rhythms to create your own. Thus, I'd say turntablism IS making music even if it's using someone else's song.
Well, the opinion of your neighbour is not enough man. If you do music with a bottle, the bottle becomes an musical instrument. You should know that. If you get a couple of water glasses, and put it with differents level of water, you can do music, and that's an musical instrument. You can't categorize-it just because it is not shaked or hitted (that theory says that the piano is a percusion instrument?).Got your mind free of preconcept ideas.Turntable is musical instrument when you create music
for the douche who calls himself a "turntablist" and doesnt take the turntable as a musical instrument, you probably just think youre a really really good bassist and a horrible dj
sticks were just sticks until someone picked them up and hit them together....then they were instruments
a turntable is just a turntable until someone comes along and makes it create original sounds....like djs
turntables are the 6th instrument i picked up in my life, and the only one i wont put down...ever
A well structured argument, I personally don't see scratching/turntables as an instrument (being a turntablist and a bassist myself), but more of a technique that creates a unique but desirable sound. is that music? I hope so. Peace.
Let's make an analogy to visual art. You may think of painters and sculptors to start with... artists of course. Now here comes a dude that chops up bits and pieces of all kinds of printed media and fits them together into a stunning mosaic. None of his source materials are even recognizable anymore. Is this person an artist? So who's a musician? The question is subjective. Anybody making noise in any way could be considered a musician. Whether understood / appreciated is a different subject.
yes ,turntable is rythem instrument ~ may b many ppl wil not agree tunrtable is an instrument cuz they r just makin scratchers frm other sounds ~ but nowadays more n more djs are makin sample and makin beat for themseleves and scratch for it ...
Turntables are technically NOT musical instruments. But technically, neither was the trumpet in the beginning. It was a way to alert people and use in ceremonies. But eventually it became an instrument. So why can a turntable not be one? If you get a beat and put it into a vinyl and then you find the right notes and play them over and find other notes and play them, is that not an instrument?
wow dude in this video is an idiot just because he thinks turntablist sound like noise doesn't change the fact that its used as a musical instrument i mean i think bagpipes sound like shit but i still know its an instrument also i have a friend who plays guitar but he has tried doing turntablism and he says its alot harder to learn funny video though gave me a quick laugh
i'll second that trider. birdy nam nam and c2c are the perfect examples, also try lamont/2tall/dj radar/john beez. to things said here i believe that timing, measures, notes, rythms and patterns made up from hand and ear skill combined mean this is an artform. i dont care about what the guy said, its a matter of opinion. he aint being nasty... just making a suggestion

I don't know what segment of the population you were trying to please, but obviously you have some hidden agenda beyond the comedy of your hairline. Go play competitive frisbee or something.
If I were to ask a "turntablist" to give me four bars of 16ths in 3/4 time, she or he might be able to pull that off... but if I ask for B minor, that DJ's head is likely to explode. I may be swayed to maybe consider the turntable some perversion of a percussive instrument... maybe... but it does nothing that a guiro or a cabaca can't do better. The turntable is not an instrument. Its a music player. And the "turntablist" is not a musician, just a glorified DJ.
So close minded. To me people make the instrument not the other way around. A grand piano is just some wood and strings... until you get a pianist behind it. And a turntable is just a record player... until you get a turntablist behind it.
Its guys like jaikwallis who make music suck. Every sound that you hear is not "MUSIC" and just because YOU like it doesn't MAKE IT "Music". The Turntable is not a musical instrument. And Turntablism and just like hip hop, loans itself to music. It rarely creates it. It augments it. But it is NOT a instrument.
The record player is a tool for playing and/or manipulating recorded music. The record player is useless without the use of a record on it whether you're playing the recorded MUSIC or scratching it. So the actual record player by itself is a piece of equipment. You guys sure write all big, why don't you post a video and show off your "Controller One"or"turntable wrecking a harp"...wtf!?
There is a misunderstanding between the USE of a machine. The turntable might be the first machine ever to be manufactured for one purpose and then be used for another. The problem you might be facing is that there are not a hell of alot of records in the mainstream that you can buy that feature "Turntablists." It is fairly new but requires extreme skill and only after witnessing the percussive vituosity you would give the proper respect.

the answer to the question, if a turntable is percussion instrument, starts at 0:45:
In order for sth to be a percussion instrument, it must me strucked or shaked. And sriking and shaking a recordplayer makes no sense.
Of course not, cause you can strike and shake the record...A turntable is a percussion instrument, indeed!
