Tyson raped someone, he didn't kill anyone. Vick tortured and killed- repeatedly. But dogs are just property, right? Time was, certain people were considered property, too...and treated similarly. Do you find that behavior excusable because of the rules in place at the time? Thought not.

Dog fighting may indeed be more common among thuggish blacks (tho where's the proof of that?), but is not a 'black thing'. It's very popular among lesser whites as well. This is not a color issue (tho Chris Rocks wants it to be). It's about environment and community. It's also not primarily 'urban', as it's more often rural, more often southern. This is backwoods ignorance and disrespect of animals in it's most blatant form...and it knows no color.

If someone with a gun is about to shoot me, the dog isn't saying "shoot me instead!", it's saying "you're threatening my owner". It doesn't know that a gun will shoot and kill someone. @TujinVB Apology accepted. Telepathy not required. Just common sense and empathy. if you don't look at the guy and read the violent animal inside, then you don't have that empathy. Two years is nowhere near good enough. Feeding him to the dog would be fine, but not chopping him up first. Send him to dinner still alive and it'll be close to what he truly deserves.

@TujinVB Always an excuse at the ready. "It's how I was raised" is no excuse. That my father abused my mother and sisters doesn't mean I must act the same way. Your repeated attempts to equate Vick's brutality toward INNOCENTS as being the same or LESS bad than our want for HIM to suffer for his GUILT is transparently insincere. If I were to wish such a thing on someone that never committed such atrocities, THEN you would have a point. "Eye for an eye" is not hypocrisy.

@jwramc You are comparing apples and oranges. Obviously, even with an abusive father, you aren't raised to believe that it is *okay*. And I'm not trying to excuse his behavior, it was beyond terrible. I'm trying to explain *my* point of view, that he *believed* that it was okay because of how and where he was raised, not because he is some sort of sociopathic, cruel, inhumane monster. And because of that, I believe that he deserves a second chance. If you feel his sentence was too light,

@jwramc then you should take it up with the justice system. You are entitled to your opinion that he hasn't really changed, and is only doing the things that he does because he has a publicist telling him to do so. Honestly, you could be right. But I choose to believe in the human capacity for change, I choose to believe that a man can make a mistake, atone for those mistakes, and turn his life around. If you choose not to, then honestly, perhaps you need to worry about bigger things than Vick.

@jwramc Rapists and murderers, violent criminals are released from prison every day after serving their sentences. If you believe a man capable of killing dogs in cold blood cannot change, how do you feel about men capable of raping and killing human beings in cold blood? They are released from prison every *single* day. @jwramc football. This is my last post on the subject, I've spent entirely too much of my time here arguing with you people. As a final note I feel I should emphasize that I totally support your right to feel that he doesn't deserve a second chance. I disagree, but I can understand why people would feel that way. My biggest problem is with the people who think he deserves violence, or even that people who support his second chance deserve violence. To me it is blatant hypocrisy. Blind hatred.

@TujinVB My hatred isn't blind- it sees Vick for what he is very clearly. You're free to forgive him. I choose not to 'til *I* see him doing enough, often enough & with an air of true repentance to deserve forgiveness. Doing what the court orders is enough for the court, but enough for me. And I do take that up with the courts, daily, in my work to find justice for all the dogs suffering at the hands of sick people. Dragging in rapist/murderers is absurd extrapolation. @TujinVB ...specify that those are horrific crimes, too. Just because there are WORSE crimes to commit doesn't excuse the one you consider lesser crimes. It also proven fact that human abusers start out by abusing animals. Call it spring training. Stop them hard and fast at the first sign of cruelty to animals, and there will be rapes and murders that never occur as a result. Keep making excuses for these homo-defectus and you share the responsibility for their acts when they finally 'go pro'.

And then you ask what have these dogs done to deserve hatred from the Black community? Dog fighting is a major "sport" in many communities (not just black). @kareninafication the best fighter while staying away from in-breeding just the same. It's a huge problem in Southern states and if you took the time to really look into it the history of it all, you would see most rings that are busted up are owned and controlled by white owners. These dogs get shipped around all over and is big business. No one is saying Vick was in the right or that it was funny. But for you to say "urban neighborhoods," is just nuts. I'm struggling with a reply since you just don't seem to actually say anything substantial. There are only two ways a person can begin to forgive Vick: 1- You haven't a clue what was really done to the dogs, or 2- Your mind is as sick as his, and the dogs' suffering just doesn't matter to you. One is ignorant, the other evil. I've no wish to associate with either type.

@jwramc 12 year old neighbor girl wants to be a vet. knew about the vick thing but not the details.i told her. about the swimming pool electrocutions, bludgeoning, hangings, bait dogs and what they do to them.and i told her that for black people(we live in a mixed neighborhood) it was fairly standard entertainment and that blacks don't see a problem with it. she didn't believe me. i showed her these blogs and some of Chris Rock's comedy. now she knows.

@kareninafication And regarding what Portis said, that is a perfect example of why it's a good thing that Michael Vick was caught and punished for it. It opened a lot of people's eyes to how prevalent of a problem this is, and every Sunday, he's out there demonstrating to kids that even if you made a mistake and were involved and that stuff, it's not the right way, and putting it all behind you and trying to improve yourself is the only way to be successful.

I'm usually a fan of Chris Rock, but - man! - he's missing the point on this one. Maybe Chris needs to see some of the effects of dog fighting ON THE DOGS to understand why so many people are outraged.
This isn't about "white" outrage, or any-other-color outrage. It's about an abuse of power on a helpless living, feeling, being. What Vick and his friends did is just plain wrong. Don't matter where they grew up: they knew better. Why else did Vick initially lie, if he didn't know this?
