  • awesome, underrated song!

  • a window to my soul.anyone who dosent appreciate this song is either a teenager or an idiot who has no emotion in his life.or just emotionally retarded.thare are 17 others on this planet with good taste-good on ya!!

  • Awesome song...again I have to agree with the majority here!! This IS my favorite Mellencamp song. Had a band once. We did this tune and everyone was like..."That ain't Mellencamp!" . LOL. Goes to show ya what mysteries you find when you buy an actual CD! Thank you for the post. :)

  • This song is why I buy CDs instead of downloading a single . Every once in a great while you discover a nugget like this hiding out .Rikki Lee Jones rocks the background . Scarecrow is one of my faves .

  • My favorite Mellencamp song by far.

  • Thank you for posting this!! I don't know why it's so hard to find on YT! I was raised around Mellencamp and just hearing the music takes me back to my youth! Ha ha! This is my favorite song EVER!!!

  • I love this song and was glad it wasin the shadows so to speak. It is definitely one of his best. Rickie Lee Jones just rocks this song, what a duo!

  • I'd go as far to say Between a Laugh and A Tear was the best release from John Mellencamp in the 80's, at least in my books it was.

  • this is one of the very best!!!

  • thank you again, Asilazi from macon, georgia, for posting this ... sorry for the confusion / misunderstanding over the rickie lee jones reference re: her harmony vocals on the studio track here vs. the slide of sheryl crow singing w/ mellencamp that I saw yesterday ... no criticism ever intended; just thanks !

  • @47cardinal Thank you for your comments. I just figured a redo was in order.

  • Rikki Lee Jones background vocals make this song .

  • Probably my favorite and long been awaiting its posting here. Largely an unknown in his catalogue but really captures some great perspectives..."I know there's a balance. I see it when I swing past..."

  • @bendbadgersteve ..."I know there's a balance. I see it when I swing past..."

    Yea, it's a great line, isn't it.

  • sure is...

  • @Asilazi Love RLJ's vocal on "swing past"
