I meant to also say back when it came out it wasn't called Strafe jumping, it's actually called Circle-Strafe Jumping because you have to move your crosshair in a kind of semi circle, starting from bottom right at the beginning of a jump, looking slightly down, then moving up toward the center (meeting it at the peak of the jump) then moving it down toward the left as you land, but not straight there, like a semi circle. This was for a left circlestrafejump.
I have tried this jump hundreds of times on the practice map and still cant do it. I get close....really fucking close...but i just can't muster anymore momentum
@Beghty27 I got same situation for months, believe me it was because of I was moving mouse very slow. Just try to make first jump, with much faster mouse movement. It will work I promise :)
@theat This is one of the hardest jumps to pull off in any videogame, so I don't think you should say it should be easy to learn. As others have pointed out, your own videod jump is quite clumsy, and I doubt are able to pull it off reliably.
@noobyvids3 Exact same here. I couldn't do it at all, but now from reading your comment I've realised I always hold down jump to get an instant bunny hop, but damn I did it first try now.
Melodious is right. This guy is doing the jump very sloppily. Not much mouse turning which Gives the player more acceleration. I'm positive he wouldn't have made the same jump in quake3 client with that technique. Id must have changed the physics and made strafing a little easier in quakelive for the kiddies
@easiertolie99 lol maybe. I'm kinda glad though, strafejumping isn't exactly common, and not all of us want to dedicate ~20 years to a game just to play at a semi competitive level ;)
@easiertolie99 hed be fine in q3, everyone has to adjust to the physics...i played ql for 2 years and went back to q3 after not playing for years and it took maybe 10-15 tries to get it right again.
Yep, once you master it, you dont forget it. Sorta like your first time rising a bike. I think I was at 90 percent success rate or higher before I quit quake. Now if you really want a challenge, start doing it backwards. Only 10-20 success in q3 before I gave up on the jump. I think fatality told me he was doing it 50percent of the time !
i can do it in DeFrag on Q3 but in live? the strafe is not good really bad infact, a standard Run in defrag is an absolute mission in QLive... cold run is very hard where as the first leap you dont even need to double jump at the start, you need one clean strafe onto the platform, with live its like you JUST about make it to the first platform.. i dont get how you did this..
@tracybrauer hi,3 days into ql. i did it like this: on the practice map take 3rd lane. run diagonally (forward+strafe left). when jumping twitch the mouse left.keep holding forward+left until you land, center mouse, then change to right strafe+jump+twitch mouse right simultaniously. repeat and slightly increase mouse angle with every jump. hold the strafe as long as possible and only tip jump.keep in mind this timing isnt actually right but enough to do the practice course.
what is your advice for ppl who use a high mouse sensitivity? I'm imitating what i see and I either jump clear off the bridge on the first jump or fall short of the rail on the second. On good jumps i get close but still no.
As people said before me, the most important thing is not the keypresses, it's the mouse movement. I sat swearing with this jump for about 40 minutes before I noticed that I made it if I moved my mouse a little faster ^^. Also, the timing when you should start moving the mouse, and the timing when you jump is crucial ^^. Good video anyways!
It's important to point out that you should have your fps capped at 120. You really want to get a good swing on the strafe jump too, it's quite possible to do the bridge -> rail jump without having to land on the little gray corner piece.
ok, let me correct myself. he didn't do it right in the first jump, but later does it somewhat correctly. but they don't explain the mouse movement. and how important it is. the mouse movement is EVERYTHING for strafejumping.
if you wanna learn movement, play q3 defrag or warsow race. it's basically the same thing. you can even play the same maps. it's fun. many different kind of maps, like climbing maps, strafejump maps with hindrances, rocket maps...
@melodiousMO hmm, vq3 movement is a little different to QL. just dl raz3rs training map for QL^^ it's somewhere in the QL forums. strafelanes and many jumps in there
the dude in this video doesn't do it right. good god. i first had to play warsow in order to understand how strafejumps really work. i always wondered why all these tutorial vids didn't work for me... now it's obvious. they don't teach the strafejump correctly AT ALL.
they are forgetting the most important part: you gotta slowly move the mouse into the same direction you're pressing the strafe button. cause this is what actually causes most of the acceleration - THE MOUSE MOVEMENT!
this is the kind of vid that noobs need, for mainly sj and rj, with both the keyboard hud, and the explanation, cuz while there are some people who can strafe and rocket jump, they arent exactly profficient at it, and they cant either get as high or gain as much speed as they are actually able

it depends what your current skill level is in strafe jumping. That determines where you need to start your cj from

question: is QL still fps dependent as Q3 was? I remember in Q3 the best setting for me was fps @ 125 (I quess in 2002).
klaasklapper 2 years ago
You dont need 125 fps in order to have perfect control and better strafe, jumps, etc as in Q3. They fixed that.
But of course 125 fps is needed for smoother movement.
