The flow of exhaust gasses coming out of the pipe is disrupted by the diffuser and forced around it. Try holding a piece of paper so that the thin side is close to your mouth and blow on it fast.
i just watched a video of this year's cars and i gotta say, although they sound incredible, i think im gonna miss the BD sound. What track was this on anyway? i watched this video about 10 times already and dont get tired of watching. great job.
@danalves this is Monza. I got to make this race when i was studying abroad in italy last year and hearing the BD in person is a life changing experience :D
Saw the F1 cars at Indy. I just love the no ear plugs on the people in the stands, they are are going to have serous ringing in the ears for the next month. Sounds like an ice pick in the ear if you don't have ear plugs.
IN MY OPINION, if you listen renault powered cars, the blowing system looks almost perfect, blowing continuously in deceleration. Mercedes powered ones are quite good to. BUT Ferrari's system seems to be the worst, it looks like it's blowing only a moment after you close the throttle.
I had the good fortune to listen to these for the weekend at Spa. Like nothing I've ever heard before. No camera/speaker combination I have come across has been able to reproduce the ferocity of the EBD sound - it's like machine gun fire. Incredibly loud, and resonates in your chest like bass at a nightclub. Something I'll never forget. I remember the Red Bulls being particularly distinctive, and the Ferraris more...meaty/grumbly.
I have been @ Hungaroring in 2011, and i was really shocked when i heard these crappy sounds the first time! I missed the clear backfires from former years (especially F1 V10s years ago), these unnatural misifires suck imho! But anyway, that's not what about this comment should be :D I would say thanks again for your awesome vids, with awesome TRUE SOUNDS! Thank you, and keep it on :) Cu @ Monza 2012

@MyHydrazine when i went to my first grand prix at silverstone it was lucky that they had banned the EBD for that race because they sound horrible and i think that red bull will not dominate next season you watch
INCREDIBLE!!! I was in Nürburgring 2009, Spa 2009, Hockenheim 2010, Nürburgring 2011 and I´m going to be in Hockenheim 2012, but I never managed it to record the engine noise as it really is. I tried different cams, but it was impossible.
This is how the F1 sounds like. Lotus sounds really awesome this year. Thumbs up!!
Couldn't hear it on the tele but damn, those RBR sound violent and almost demonic. I can understand why the other teams wanted to copy them. Clearly the work of Satan himself.
I wouldn't say that it's a horrible noise.. But I'm glad I won't be hearing any of that technical blargh at Silvie :D Any of you seen the leaked thing about Mercedes? Supposedly they've got an F-Duct sort of thing for the front wing / nose cone.
I'm up in the Brabham Stands at the end of the straight going into and out of turn 2.
Are you in a stand or general admission?
If you are in general admission AND you go on race day, I will tell you the BEST spot to watch the race next to being in a Grand Stand that costs over $500.00 for the 4 day event.Let me now where you think is a great spot or the spots you really like?
Cheers, thanks.
Oh,and Bozzy,I let everyone know about this vid!!!!
@MusicalAndTall don't think, i'm just one of the few who don't like the sound of the actual F1 V8's.. I miss the clear sound of the V10's, aswell those of the V8's 2-3 years ago :-( And i know that this are not "unnatural misfires" (like i wrote) but a forced result of the opened throttle valve.. Anyhow, i don't like it, has nothing todo with being retarded, but thx ;)
@dheeraj2102 Thanks! Well I'm only a car enthusiast and I'm quite lucky to live near a famous racetrack. When I'm there I take some videos of the cars and also I take some pictures. Nothing else ;)
You can hear it the renualts are smooth, and the others so ruff sounding, thats because the redbulls blown diffusers work so well, because there is constent gases going to the diffuser
Finally the sounds of some delicious backfires...that particular corner provides some superb backfires when they partially lift off. Please keep them coming.
Its the onboard ECU applying the throttle when the drivers are braking, it means that the air is moving over the rear diffuser in the braking zone giving the car more down force in the corner, increasing corner speed. Banned for next year though :)
They did the same sound while entering the pits in the Brazilian GP... I was right in front of the pit entry and as soon as that sound came I was like O.O'
I didnt see any of the Renaults drive by, but DUDE! they sound like they are about to break or something. Great video...cant wait for 2012! Def going to Canada, and hopefully Austin too.
@proximer217 I understand what you're meaning and it's absolutly right but I found this sentence "Teams blowing their diffusers rely on the throttle being open to keep airflow passing to the diffuser and increase the downforce on it" on a F1 website. ( When I uploaded the video I couldn't explain how the blown exhaust worked. I found something on the internet and I copied it). I correct it with something else.
@19Bozzy92 Thanks for the reply :)What ya said is right when not under braking and while under braking the extreme engine map settings lets the hot gas exhausts through diffuser in corners, increasing downforce..
@proximer217 The throttle stays at least 90% open at all times. Electronics adjust fuel injection and ignition to take away power while still igniting the exhaust gasses to maintain near constant air pressure coming out the exhaust. That intentional backfiring is what causes the flatulent sound.
I understand this system is there to blow gases when the driver is if the throttle, but would the system bleeping the throttle or whatever to blow the gasses make the engine push the car forward? Do the stellar brakes overcome the throttle and still slow down the car? Does the power disconnect or from the wheels or what? I'm confused.
I love the sound of the exhaust blown diffuser! i think the whole system is fascinating and interesting. The sport should encourage more competitive and innovative systems (F-duct, E.B.D etc) rather than ban them.
@rabihz24 Part 1- The Aussie GP is awesome. It's a short tram trip from the CBD,in fact it is pretty much in the city on a road circuit around the lake.
So the public can drive on the "track" all year round & it's great in the lead up & after the actual race with the grandstands & the sponsor signs,it's like you're in the F1 racing!
It's great cos u can hear the cars anywhere you are in the city & quite a way out in the suburbs too.
I think it's one of the best f1 locations & races ever. 2Bcont'd
@miles2057 Part 2- It is a real shame that the current Victorian government (Melbourne is in the state of Victoria,Aust.) wants to get rid of the f1 gp after it's contract to host the race is up in 2015 due to financial "losses" which is rubbish.
They say that hosting the race costs tax payers well over 50 million dollars,up to 66 million.
Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia & f1 brings SO MUCH revenue to the city & state with tourists & economy etc which is well in excess of 66 mil..
@ollie010222 it's for maintaining the airflow going through the diffusers when the cars slow down and/or brake.
diffusers = + downforce; higher air flow, higher downforce
braking/slow down = slower air flow going through the diffusers
but you obviously can't keep stepping on the throttle (to keep the exhaust gases going through the diffusers, and avoid losing downforce) if you want to decelerate, so they "pulse" it instead hence the abnormal sound of the engine during braking.
@loetkoe27 Yes I got some footages of them but I didn't put it in the video because the blown exhaust sound is exactly the same of the red bulls. Renault sounds a bit louder.
Sure its nice to see the cars, the drivers and hear the exhaust, but what's more important to me is the race itself and the excitement of the competition among the drivers and teams.
I like the sound a lot, it reminds me of a jake brake on a big truck. At first before reading some comments that is what I thought it was, an F1 engine brake to allow less brake fade. And maybe something else?
Another proof that theory pretending motorsports are planning for future fuel savings technologies is just bullshit. What can you expect with keeping throttle open all the time?
As someone who doesnt know much about f1 it sounds really bad lol when they are breaking, as if the car is going to break or is already broken or something ^^
when i heard one for the first time in real life it was a HRT going down the pitlane at the 2011 British gp and it sounded like God was going down the pit lane!
For U.S. fans.........I can't wait to hear that sound in real life again.....I miss Indianapolis. Thumbs up if you are already trying to figure out if you will be going to Jersey or Austin in 2013.
is this hungary because i was there this year no offence but your camera microphone doesnt even capture the proper sound from the car i was in gold 4 btw
This is Monza dude, I think Bozzy's camera mic captures the sound perfectly. I love this video man, it's a shame they're banning the blown diffusers next year :(
@ssj5devilhunter666 An unmodified Honda F1 car went 257 mph in 2005. It had a non-turbocharged v10 engine and no KERS. The F1 cars of today could likely do about the same speed, factoring in the added power of KERS to the smaller v8 engine.
@9xSIC the exploding mixture of gassoline and air. The engine is fireing up some of the cylinders even when driver is not standing on noise pedal. I can imagine that it is not a clean burning with some backfire
In some cases the sound is similar to the gritty traction control noise of a few years ago

Google or watch some vid's on YT, they'll give you a better explaination..

I've never heard the blown exhaust watching TV. Can someone tell me what they are for?
ollie010222 3 months ago
@ollie010222 it's for maintaining the airflow going through the diffusers when the cars slow down and/or brake.
diffusers = + downforce; higher air flow, higher downforce
braking/slow down = slower air flow going through the diffusers
but you obviously can't keep stepping on the throttle (to keep the exhaust gases going through the diffusers, and avoid losing downforce) if you want to decelerate, so they "pulse" it instead hence the abnormal sound of the engine during braking.

Very very nice! Did you get any footage of the Renault car?
loetkoe27 3 months ago 3
@loetkoe27 Yes I got some footages of them but I didn't put it in the video because the blown exhaust sound is exactly the same of the red bulls. Renault sounds a bit louder.

Sure its nice to see the cars, the drivers and hear the exhaust, but what's more important to me is the race itself and the excitement of the competition among the drivers and teams.

i'm kinda addicted to this sound. it's strange, but really cool. sometimes i wake in the morning with the urge to listen to theses blown exhausts
pedroivobritto 3 months ago
That sound is ghastly
KyleReidzilla 3 months ago
I like the sound a lot, it reminds me of a jake brake on a big truck. At first before reading some comments that is what I thought it was, an F1 engine brake to allow less brake fade. And maybe something else?
Palenka 3 months ago
wow on tv the blown exhausts dont sound to bad but in real life its awful no wonder there banning it for next year
MrAdamevan 3 months ago
Another proof that theory pretending motorsports are planning for future fuel savings technologies is just bullshit. What can you expect with keeping throttle open all the time?

Wow O.e

As someone who doesnt know much about f1 it sounds really bad lol when they are breaking, as if the car is going to break or is already broken or something ^^

when i heard one for the first time in real life it was a HRT going down the pitlane at the 2011 British gp and it sounded like God was going down the pit lane!

Sounds like thunder

For U.S. fans.........I can't wait to hear that sound in real life again.....I miss Indianapolis. Thumbs up if you are already trying to figure out if you will be going to Jersey or Austin in 2013.

is this hungary because i was there this year no offence but your camera microphone doesnt even capture the proper sound from the car i was in gold 4 btw
mimz881 3 months ago
@mimz881 If this is not the proper sound of a F1 car, how sould they sound like?
19Bozzy92 3 months ago 13
@19Bozzy92 no i meant from the ear and yes my mistake its monza i didnt watch the whole video before commenting
mimz881 3 months ago 3
@mimz881 Oh yes the sound is a lot louder in the real life, and it's impossible to reproduce it with your speakers. you're right ;)
19Bozzy92 3 months ago 4
@19Bozzy92 they should sound like v12 or v10

This is Monza dude, I think Bozzy's camera mic captures the sound perfectly. I love this video man, it's a shame they're banning the blown diffusers next year :(
gr8whiterb26 3 months ago
@gr8whiterb26 yes i know i meant monza
mimz881 3 months ago
@mimz881 if you think this is Hungary your an idiot? since when does Hungary have a 210mph straight into a chicane?
jwilson2814 3 months ago
@mimz881 it's Monza in Italy ;)

@ssj5devilhunter666 An unmodified Honda F1 car went 257 mph in 2005. It had a non-turbocharged v10 engine and no KERS. The F1 cars of today could likely do about the same speed, factoring in the added power of KERS to the smaller v8 engine.

I understand what the blown exhausts do and how they are setup, but what creates this noise?
9xSIC 3 months ago
@9xSIC throttle blips and backfires
enilyksnor 3 months ago
@9xSIC the exploding mixture of gassoline and air. The engine is fireing up some of the cylinders even when driver is not standing on noise pedal. I can imagine that it is not a clean burning with some backfire

what kind of engine would an F1 need for it to get to 235 mph (380 kph)?
3.5L v10 engine? 3.0 v10 turbocharged? v12? (this includes DRS and KERS!!)
