Went to see Seasick last December. 1 really funny part of his set was when a member of the audience shouted 'play us some of that old time blues Steve.' He got told in no uncertain turns, Blues, no chance. You come to see the wrong man if you want blues. I'm a song and dance man, not a blues man!
the sad thing about this is steve is an amazing true artist that dose old time roots american music, but america has no clue about him, everyone in the U.K loves him, they understand what a great rare artist he is, but america just dosent get it.. i guess if its not media driven pop or rap then america turns away. and thats bullshit. lol.
I'm a 22 year old American, as proud as I can be in these times, and I'd say this is the best damn music that ever jumped into my ears. Amazing stuff. Powerful and with so much emotion. I'd define music as just that. Powerful, and from the heart and soul.
@mcjoz88 im a 32 year old american.. what imm saying is in america steve will never be understood by most younger american people because he is real and pure...
Goes to show its not the guitar its the person playing it, this guy spent a large proportion of his life as a tramp, has a bashed up old guitar which doesnt look like it would fetch $50 and yet hes awesome.
I love a lot of different kinds of music Rush , Zeppelin , JJ Cale , Porcupine Tree , Floyd the list goes on and on .......... but this is the real deal , just sit him on your back porch in the evening ..... tequila , salt & lemon some mellow weed , and some good friends and you just had the best concert you ever been to.
If i could do that i'd love to travel around the world just busking all day, i wouldn't care if i had no where to sleep that night, just get enough for food and enough to get to the next place.
I tried to play the guitar but i am just not a natural, i mean music in general. Then again i don't know if it works like that, does it? Do you HAVE to be a natural in order to ever become a good musician? I'd think you would, but i don't know for sure, i suppose practise makes perfect in all things.
@Sozlled In my opinion there ainn't such a thing as "natural talent". It is all practice and the rest is about being centered in yourself. The thing is, that practicing music starts before you are born. For example, my father is a musician and so I started to listen to music before I was born. Then my mother sang with me child songs for about an hour everytime I went to sleep. Of cause i have a "Natural" feeling for tones and harmony. I guess thats about the trick. So never give up trying ;)
Martin parlour guitar....size 00 ...probably fiftys or before.
It's the real thing.....sounds period because it is period....Pretty guitar with the most incredible voice....love this guy...taking music back where it belongs...in the hearts of the people...not in the pockets of the record producers.
Fuckin A! This is music. Fuck the damn plastic industry of mass production pop shit they spoon feed us on the fucking MTV. If I see one more Hollywood whore lip syncing some shitty "hit" song I swear I'm gonna put a bullet in the tube and call it a day.
@cousinmerle It's an old gold foil pickup taken from a cheap Harmony guitar from the 60's. He screwed it to a plate and attached it to the soundboard. If you look closely, you'll notice he's using nickel guitar strings (aka electric guitar strings). This is because normal guitar pickups don't capture the sound of the wound brass strings as well.
Another person who played hackwired, insane acoustics was the late great Hasil Adkins.
@cousinmerle It's a gold foil pickup from an old Harmony electric guitar. If you look closely, he has the guitar strung with thick electric strings. Although in this vid, he's playing acoustically, when in concert, the Harmony pickup responds better to electric strings.
@zoso1. It's a 1950's/1960's DeArmond Goldfoil pickup. These are 'hot', and give a real Bluesy-sound. Ry Cooder is a great fan of these, and has a couple of them on his guitars. Seasick's likes them as well, because all of his guitars that I know of have some sort of DeArmond Pickup on them - bar the cigar box guitars and Morris Minor Hub Cap guitar.

@TheFlatheadpete Actually as any true blues man would know, Ol' Rob Johnson is looking UP at steve grinin' cause that's how you get dah blues fame. You sell your soul to the devil at the crossroads down south.

He used to use that guitar in the level devils, where he played more distorted stuff.
