I have a d90 and I'm really impressed with it. You can't compare it to d50 because that is a different category. Compare it to 450 rebel or the new 550 and the Nikon will win hands down. The image quality is the same or you have to really look to make out the difference and in 99% it will be the lens not the camera who makes the difference. I don't care about the movie option and the d90 has more advanced functions like spot metering on the focusing spot, and so on ....
@mixmaxdix no not really. it is kindof in between. they "say" the 50d has better features and is a faster shooting camera than the d90, but in all the reviews i have read thus far the 50d has not lived up to the hype. i would say it is on the d90 level, d300 blows it away hands down. granted, i am a little partial to nikon... so take this post how you will. but really, cannon, nikon, both awesome cameras. comes down to type of shots and budget.
nice man, honest and relax review. i had the same expirience though i did go the 450D to 50D and now to D90. really impressed with the D90's ergo and easy adjustment of commonly used funtions, though i really missed the Canon's simple menu and "set" button.
@drfrequency 50d has more fps, has better performance in high iso's, has 15 mp, is a heck of a lot faster... and more easy to change settings due to the row of essencion buttons near the top lcd... (in the d90 to change the iso you have to press button on the back of the camera wich is a waste of time, the 50d has a magnesium alloy body so it feels like a tank and not plastiki like the d90....
all true but for the average joe i found the 50 d too much of a cam ie too heavy for trips to big and complicated if your just leaving the cam on auto and not messing with isos the d90 is fine also im not comparing the 2 there 2 totally different cams
ps using a canon t1i now and it works fine as well fair bit of 50d hardware in it
@mixmaxdix Yes it has more fps, yes solidly built. I've been shooting sports for a while and my D90 at 4.5 fps gives me more than enough keepers. better high iso performance? nope; 50d has significantly heavier noise reduction which kills detail. compare the d90 and 50d at the same iso and you'll similar amounts of noise, more detail on the d90. just looking at 50d raw images vs d90 raw, d90 has far better per pixel sharpness (as much or more detail captured as 50d)
@zirtico i mean... RAW files... try to shoot to with l glass and do not base you opinions on the crappy 18 200 lens...
50d is just a much more professional camera... and faster overall and has 3 more megapixels which on cropping helps a lot... and you can have my word cuz i have both a 40d and a 50d and some L glass and i tell you that thing is SHAARP... iso 800 is like iso 400 on the d90... i have tested both cameras, my friend's camera is a d90 and we tested it... check camera labs review..
@mixmaxdix if you love a camera, you stick to the camera. not by how many megapixels it has. You can't tell someone who loves their camera what is better or not. We're Nikon shooters. We love our nikons.
Nikon is known for their amazing ttl flash capabilities. If you get several of their higher end flashes (i.e. sb-600 and up) you can instantly use the lights as small studio or outdoor strobes by using the commander mode on the D90.
Thanks for posting this! You make some very very valid points which I had never thought of!The one thing that was actually drawing me to the canon 50D was tougher aluminium/magnesium body. But as you point out the Canon is bigger, the other thing that has kind of put me of the Canon,is from what I have read,Canon Tend to hide various settings deep inside their menus-This I know for sure would drive me wild!Hows image quality compare?as the canon is higher res?
higher rez makes no diff unless your printing out monster pics, the d90 to me seems a bit sharper then canon but then again i never gave the 50d much of a chance.
jeff
ps i had to copy and paste the guys comment in my window as per i hit remove by mistake :)
Hi, I've followed your migration from the D80 to the 50D back to the D90 - and about to embark on a similar journey. Apart from the size of the 50D, how did you find the image quality and function between the two systems? I am particularly interested in TTL flash performance between the two systems - fill flash in particular. Thanks. (P.S. I'll be checking back when the D100 arrives)...
well.. which camera do you have?... if i got the master-mod in it s in-built flash.... !!!buy two sb600, you will get it for the price of one sb900... so you get 2 flashs which you can use in the slave mod... wireless flashing...
Depends. If you really need a massive amount of power go for the sb900. If not, then the sb600 will pretty much do everything you need and will save you money for more glass!
yes but does an extra 2 megapixels make that much difference? I need to know about image processing.I want true and vibrant colours and of course the most important thing ....low noise :)
the extra mega pixels helps with larger poster type images but as far as vibrant there about the same, its really the glass that makes the most diff ie the better the lens the more you can do with it.
Hold of on that, the D90 has much better noise performace and a much better focusing engine. I 100% recommend the d90. It is much much better. Also, Im not sure but the D90's auto focus engine works with older lenses, but the d80 only works with new expensive afs lenses. So look into it. Hope I caught you in time. The megapixel don't make a shit worth of a difference so don't look too much into it.
Yea definitely don't get it for video because it is shitty at it, no auto focus and if you movie it to fast the video splits horizontally in the middle.
ok how about the sb-600 compare to sb-900 is it worth it to buy the sb600? cuz im planning to buy a flash and cant decide what to buy. the sb-900 or the sb-600. pls need advice thanx
Glad to hear that you give the D90 a thumbs up. I almost bought a D90 instead of sticking with canon, which I have for years, but I ended up buying a 50D. I would like to know how well the VR helps stabilize your videos, because as you stated, you would probably be better off using a tripod.
good question i had the 50d as well :) the d90s vid and the vr are a good combo but not something that you would do a broadcast with, ie short little vids are fine, as far as the vr lens with vid i would think a smaller lens would fare better like a 2.8 or something like that the 18-200 is too broad banded if that makes sense :)
Good video! I think it's great that you felt the 50D was too big and too complex for where you're at with photography. Most people think if they buy the biggest or best camera they can afford then they will take professional photos but in reality it's the user that defines the picture quality. I'm not a Nikon user but was very impressed with the D90 when I played with it in store.
What the canon 50D is the best camera for the money the D90 is a good camera overall but the D90 is no where near the 50D also the 50D without the battery grip is about the same size as the D90 aand about the same weight
Good walk around on the D90 Dr, got one a week ago with standard Nikon 18-55 VR lens and blown away by the quality. Interested in your thoughts on the Nikon 18-200 VR lens picture quality and how you have found it so far paired with the D90 as I'm thinking buying this lens because of its versatile range. Have read / seen the reviews but am interested in a hands on opinion from an every day average user such as yourself.
Thanks Jeff, Bike / model photos were top notch, I'm sold on the lens. Roughly about $1000 in Aussie dollars down here which is about $700 US roughly, hopefully it will come down abit soon in price, not much of a saving on the old Ebay either.

The tripod head is somewhat unstable. Moves when the weight of the hand is brought upon the camera. May still lead to image blur...
