My grandparents have an African Gray too! I don't know if your African Gray's tail at the end is red, but theirs is. Their parrot is about 9-years-old :)
I have only had my gray for three weeks, but I now have towels and sheets over everything! He is almost eight years old, but has been in a cage most of his life. I love having him out, but "potty training" so far has only been on my part! I now recognize the 'look' he gives right before he goes! LOL! My grandson's mini-macaw will actually say "go Potty" and wait to be held over a garbage can!
Yes, indeed! Except I'm pretty sure most of ponti's are more purposeful and less accidental. They say a parrot is supposed to go a few times an hour. But if Ponti waited that long I'd think she was impacted!
We keep looking for a African grey and all the replys I get are scams, really looking for onr who needs a home and alot love. Where would you go to find one? Pls. reply and No scams Thanks
hi i have a african gray and he does that donk thing that your one does at the beginning i just wondered if you tough her that because we dont know if its a natral noise they make
You HAVE a Timneh and you can't tell the difference?
It is a Congo, Congo's have a solid black beak, and Timneh's have light brown on the top portion of their mandible. (Congo's also have a bright red tail, and Timneh's are a dark maroon, but that doesn't count here since you can't see the bird's tail.)
Not sure what you're talking about here, if you're saying they only talk as 'trick' to get a "treat" you're sorely mistaken. these birds talk your ear off whether or not you want them to, and in fact they can use it as communication instead of just mimicry.
hey you from lots of reaserch and stuff you can potty ttrain them,,, pay close attention to any "signals" the bird may give you before relieving himself. These can be as subtle as a change in posture, a certain "look" in the bird's eyes, or a ruffling of tailfeathers. take it too a special place that it goes to to releive itself/
wait for it to poop and praise it lots when it does and if does somewhere else dont praise him at all and put him in his cage
nice bird i want one... can i have yours.... JJ. hay i got some thing you should teach it try siting down with it while watching cops and try to get it to pick up on the radio.... i got a gallar to do it so it should be a walk in the park for you.
It's a responsiblity...in a way it's kind of like having a kid. Except it's going to be a 50+ year commitement to care and not 18 years. You can't kick a parrot out of the house when he turns 18 :). Vey sweet looking birdie! She loves her tickles, doesn't she? I have an 11 year old CAG that I got when he was 6 months old. Some advice from me...do your homework before ever getting a parrot. Do not buy one from a pet store, unless it is a bird-only pet store. If this is your first bird, DO NOT buy an unweaned baby bird. Too many things can go wrong when hand feeding a baby. And, get ready for a life long commitment, because parrots can live to be 80-90 years old.
I couldn't agree more with Songlady7's advice. Especially the lifetime commitment part. Its amazing to think that if ponti ONLY lives to be 50 years old (which is the low side of things) I'll be 74 years old when she dies. AG's are especially rewarding birds to own, but it does take dedication and commitment. I am continually amazed at how smart ponti is. These birds are actually capable of logical thought and communication. It's really amazing.
I currently live with my 8 year old Congo African Grey that I bought off a breeder WAY before they should have sold it to me! It was not even one month old and I was 22 at the time and had to hand rear him for several months with NO experience; but I was determined and I prevailed! My 'Makeda' is a beautiful bird and I love him very much. It does depend on what kind of 'first bird owner' you are though. I will say that hand rearing is definitely NOT for the faint of heart!
Wow, that's incredible! I got ponti when she was bout 5 months old, so she was fully weaned. But she was hand-raised so she was friendly from the start. I can't imagine the pressure of having to raise an AG from a little baby like you did, that's incredible, congratulations!
So cute! Our grey says a bunch. He says, "C'mon...wanna go outside?" to our dogs..lol..then, Barks and growls so well, that I think it is out Shih Tzu...
matt, your doing a brill job with ponti. i have just rescued an african grey who was tourcherd by her last owners and is very nervous. she squaks and squeals everytime we go near her to change her water & food. shes 2 and a half and ive onbly had her 2 months but i love her already!! keep up the videos mate!
Yes. Be sure that he always has water and food. Spend as much time with him as you can. Talk with him and he will get friendlier and friendlier i have one that is about 6 months old and hes starting to say words already. They usually start talking from 7 months old.
Yes, she has a toe that she basically has no control over, and on that same leg, she previously broke her leg when she got spooked and flew and landed on our fireplace hearth. The vet we went to didn't splint her properly (actually she needed pins) and it healed crooked. so her entire foot/leg is gimpy. Let this be a lesson to all parrot owners: Get in touch with an avian vet in your area that you can trust BEFORE something like this happens.
In response to wesley5nipes, who said, "By having these birds you fuel the capture of wild greys. Please do not buy one.".
One word: Bull#%it. Purchasing from a domestic breeder who raises these little fellows by hand IN NO WAY fuels the capture of wild greys. Gotta love the wacko-s out there!
I own an african grey myself. She is called Dolly. She makes all the same noises and also dances to the songs in 'Joseph and his technicolour dreamcoat. Your parrot is very well trained and can I just say that I love her name!
I am about to buy an african grey and I am watching as many videos of A Greys as I can. You are very lucky.... your bird is beautiful. Please share more videos of your A.G. with us. Thanks.
nice, i have recently got one gray parrot for 1200 euros,(good price for greece, specially for rhodes isl.) but he is still 3 months old, and i got to wait untill he speaks ^^ :DD he already kickass alot!:D
I think we covered this earlier in the comments section. AG's go for anywhere between $800 and $1500 and up, depending on if they're hand raised, etcetera, etcetera.
Yeah, i had two rescue birds, pink and gray galahs - very smart, but they had to get used to people and you have to be very gentle and patient or they just get frightened to death.
His vocalizations are very clear and precise. My African Grey stutters and mutters under his breath. Worst of all, I can't record him, if he senses a camera or a tape recorder in the room he stops talking. It's remarkable actually.
does he go to the bathroom around the house when you let him out like that? I really want a parrot...but I am afraid I don't know enough about them....any information helps...thanks!
Yes, and no. We've trained her fairly well, actually. we hold a napkin or kleenex underneath her and say "go poop!" and 9 times out of 10, she will poop into the kleenex. The trick is giving her the kleenex and the poop command when you think she's probably about ready to go again. The books say that they are supposed to poop every 20 minutes or so, but ponti likes to go a lot more than that. But to answer your question, if you train them right, you can control it---to an extent.
"clipping wings" merely refers to clipping their FEATHERS, exactly like clipping our fingernails. They grow back, for Pete's sake. It's to slow them down so they're less likely to go crashing into windows etc. if they get startled.
Everybody's an expert, aren't they? Talk to 10 different people and you'll get 10 different answers as to the "proper" way to trim a parrot's wings. Her avian vet did the trim. Shame on you for acting like such a pompous know-it-all.
well im just wondering how you'd feel if we cut your legs off. I'd imagine you would not be too pleased maybe fall into a serious depression and lose all confidence. You crippled the bird its as simple as that and ive kept birds for 23 years bred and kept them Never had the need to clip one EVER god intended for them to fly. So the shame is still very much on you for allowing your bird to be so badly mutilated like that.
Ponti is a very happy, healthy, intelligent, emotionally well adjusted bird. The vet actually didn't trim them like I like them to be trimmed, I usually leave the two longest flight feathers. I take it you took your own advice to the fullest extent and set all your domesticated pet birds free? Isn't that how God intended them?
For those of you who don't see these comments listed in the right order, this comment was directed to the anti-wing-clipping fanatic who was harassing me with comments last week.
Ignore that whack-job, Ponti looks marvelous and happy. Our CAG grew her feathers back in and we're testing the "flight able in the house" thing (for exercise), but wouldn't hesitate to clip her again should it become a problem or danger. If they're active and engaged often, being trimmed is perfectly fine.
Oh joy. I hate these fanatics. They can't understand that we simply do not want to lose our birds to the wild where THEY WILL DIE. And accidents happen so quickly! But see... They say you should not clip their wings because it restricts their freedom, but they sure think it's OK to keep birds captive in a cage or in a house. What a massive difference! (/sarcasm) Sure they have wings, but it's designed for them to *fly outside.* My birds will keep clipped wings. They are just as happy that way.
What a pretty bird. I've been thinking about getting an African Grey. Is she a Congo? I've been thinking about getting a Timneh 'cause they cost less but still have the same capabilities of the Congos.
my grand dad baut my parot from africa of two tribull kidds that caut it he baut it becuse he felt sorry for it onley cost £5 its now about 38 its lost the sight of one eye somhow but it get on ok its just lazy

She is so beautiful and has so intelligent eyes. But are her wings cut? She is so so so sweet and seems to be such a good bird.

By having these birds you fuel the capture of wild greys. Please do not buy one.
wesley5nipes 4 years ago

Please share more videos of your A.G. with us. Thanks.

do u buy AG'S from when there baby or when their adults?
dreamdriver77 4 years ago
how much does an african grey cost?plz answer
dreamdriver77 4 years ago
I think we covered this earlier in the comments section. AG's go for anywhere between $800 and $1500 and up, depending on if they're hand raised, etcetera, etcetera.
Matt314159 4 years ago
Unless you get them from the rescue. There are usually greys, cockatoos, amazons that need committed homes.
babetteq 4 years ago
That's true, however don't forget that the rescued birds often have special needs and might not make the ideal pet for an average person.
Matt314159 4 years ago
Yeah, i had two rescue birds, pink and gray galahs - very smart, but they had to get used to people and you have to be very gentle and patient or they just get frightened to death.
splinterblade02 4 years ago
most cost 1200 when buying from professionals who hand feed them for a nicer personality (and cause babies cant feed themselves =P)

His vocalizations are very clear and precise. My African Grey stutters and mutters under his breath. Worst of all, I can't record him, if he senses a camera or a tape recorder in the room he stops talking. It's remarkable actually.

does he go to the bathroom around the house when you let him out like that? I really want a parrot...but I am afraid I don't know enough about them....any information helps...thanks!
jumpit11 4 years ago
Yes, and no. We've trained her fairly well, actually. we hold a napkin or kleenex underneath her and say "go poop!" and 9 times out of 10, she will poop into the kleenex. The trick is giving her the kleenex and the poop command when you think she's probably about ready to go again. The books say that they are supposed to poop every 20 minutes or so, but ponti likes to go a lot more than that. But to answer your question, if you train them right, you can control it---to an extent.
Matt314159 4 years ago
"clipping wings" merely refers to clipping their FEATHERS, exactly like clipping our fingernails. They grow back, for Pete's sake. It's to slow them down so they're less likely to go crashing into windows etc. if they get startled.
lisasuits 4 years ago
well you have a beautiful Arican Grey but you do not deserve Ponti You have totally butchered the poor birds wings shame on you !!!
1BIRD1MAN1 4 years ago
Everybody's an expert, aren't they? Talk to 10 different people and you'll get 10 different answers as to the "proper" way to trim a parrot's wings. Her avian vet did the trim. Shame on you for acting like such a pompous know-it-all.
Matt314159 4 years ago
well im just wondering how you'd feel if we cut your legs off.
1BIRD1MAN1 4 years ago
Ponti is a very happy, healthy, intelligent, emotionally well adjusted bird. The vet actually didn't trim them like I like them to be trimmed, I usually leave the two longest flight feathers. I take it you took your own advice to the fullest extent and set all your domesticated pet birds free? Isn't that how God intended them?
Matt314159 4 years ago
You know what, you're just a nutjob, I'm not even going to deal with you. You're going to be blocked as soon as I post this comment.
Matt314159 4 years ago
Wow...I didn't realize there were still nutters like this around. O_O

For those of you who don't see these comments listed in the right order, this comment was directed to the anti-wing-clipping fanatic who was harassing me with comments last week.
Matt314159 4 years ago
Ignore that whack-job, Ponti looks marvelous and happy. Our CAG grew her feathers back in and we're testing the "flight able in the house" thing (for exercise), but wouldn't hesitate to clip her again should it become a problem or danger. If they're active and engaged often, being trimmed is perfectly fine.
DeadlyChinchilla 4 years ago

Your grey is younge here isn't it. It's eyes are grey, like a juvinile's, insted of the yellow of an adult grey.
JFdragonfly 4 years ago
What a pretty bird. I've been thinking about getting an African Grey. Is she a Congo? I've been thinking about getting a Timneh 'cause they cost less but still have the same capabilities of the Congos.
