Can space marine chapters work side by side on the same mission?

yes they can, but they tend not to due to a friendly rivalry because they wouldn't want to look weak in front of one another, but they will fight together in large engagements (Battle for Armageddon for example) and still die for one another on the battlefield like a space marine would do. Hope this helps answer your question :)

@swordman600 ah, but if you look at an imperial guard unit such as the Vostroyans, they where bright red uniforms because of their devotion to the machine spirit. they try to mach the color of Mars, which is where many of the highest ranking members of the Machine Cult gather. many of them are worshiped as gods, which in the case of Vostroya, which happens to be a forge world, worship them in hopes that they may bless the great forges.
