@Mari8BZF she was being chased by someone or a group of people, who probably intended to kill her and most likely torture her, and probably didn't want to make it look like a suicide.
According to Frank Miller, she had an affair with a member of the mafia, she wanted to cut ties and he told her she would die in the most horrific way and when she least expects it. So she hires the salesman. :)
That opening scene is just beautiful, just amazingly composed, it's almost like the movie is self-aware of being over-stylized and saying "Love it or hate it, I just don't care" !
And btw: It's not meant to be amazing poetry, it's meant to be the hitman's low-brow poetry showing of how much of a weird, two-faced personality he has.
The movie itself has some great and some mediocre "episodes", so to speak, really amazing are only the (very short) Hartnett and the outstanding Clive Owen ones !
@raz985 No, they ended the movie so you'd think he kills becky the same way he kills this woman when he offers her a cigarette *Care for a smoke?*. When he said "I'll cash her check in the morning" it's supposed to let you know that he's a hitman and she was his target.
"she shivers in the wind like the last leaf on a dying tree" when you can make a simile like that you know you are destined for greatness. Frank Miller is a masterful writer
@zepps88 No he didn't... He had famous composer Graeme Revell compose them with him. Originally, he asked Hans Zimmer- Who is most known for Christopher Nolan movies like Inception, but he was busy with I think one of the Batman movies.
@MrSketchtastic i know what it is. I want to know how its achieved in film. I am very familiar with film Noir and frank millers comic books but in the 2 films the texture is somewhat strange. Its not like film Noir of the 50s &60s the texture is much like the one in some need for speed games. The look of clothes and skin and generally all materials looks perfect, almost too perfect thats why it looks strange. Is that achieved in post production or with lighting or what?
@ki11erdrag0n If you're making a parody, or something alike, you'll have to choice which elements to keep and which to change. The music is usually essential to a scene, so often I steal that part. A parody of Jaws without the music would be weird too right?
@robindelange Well yes, but only if it is a well recognized theme. I mean we all know the jaws theme, the Star Wars theme, etc but this is more background (not really distinct or remembered). Well it sounds like you know what you're doing though. Send me a link :)
As it turns out, that lady was a gangster's girlfriend who broke off the relationship and was promised to be killed off in a gruesome manner. She wanted to die by her own means, so she hired the colonel/salesmen.
technically there are 4 stories of characters in this movie & this is one of them the hitman, doesnt go into his background or who he is, that much he is just at start & end of movie
romantic in its brutality. perfectly done.

Will have to remember this line, its great. And that bounty hunter is just so cool, even though we know so little about him.

I don't think it's exact but the solo is very similar to 'Peter Gun' or 'Peter Gunn'

Interesting thing is that this wasn't just done as an intro - this is an actual Sin City strip by Frank Miller.

The sax solo you hear at the beginning is SEX. Thats my kind of jazz. Of course that compliments the scene being obviously Neo Noir
