I think most people don't know what flamenco is. They just assume that anything with a nylon string guitar that is sort of latin sounding must be "flamenco".

Hell, I was one of 'em for years, then I went to Spain and found out what real flamenco is and is not.

I am fed up of people saying you NEED nails on the right hand. You do not NEED them. Alot of flamenco players leave them short. It depends on what sort of sound you want, short nails=warmer, long=sharper and crisper. But you do not NEED long nails.

You don't need them. But a masterful guitarist should have them and be able to play with or with out them depending on the tone you want.

There's always exceptions i'm sure, but as a general rule of thumb thats what i go by.

It's fine to go by, but it isn't a rule. It is simply a preference. A good guitarist, like you said, should be able to play both with well. But the decision they make to have them or not is simply based around tonal preference.

I will never have long nails on my left or right hand because a) my nails are thin b) long nails are IMO cumbersome and c) I will not use super glue or other techniques to add strength to the nails. So my tone is very warm due to the short nails compared to other's with long nails. Just another option for tone and feel when playing. :)

Well. Classical guitar is meant for plaing with fingers. Which is why they let their fingernails grow so it creates that nice sound a pick makes. PLaying a classical song with a pick would be almost impossible.
