Its really neat you were able to recover the engine years later. What you are describing is a Flash Steam Engine. What makes your engine interesting is that it was actually built. I think it will be worthwhile to tune the engine up with possibily a copper headgasket, and re film the engine running better. Your mention to the engine coming to a stop as the heat is used up is very instructive.

Nearly there. Bill Ryan in USA has a go-kart with a hot head steam engine, but he pre heats the water before injecting it into the cylinder.
