This is a problem I have with people saying being a basketball player is not a realistic dream. The NBA is NOT the only place u can become a basketball player. if u dont play in the NBA does not mean u have to stop playing basketball. The USA is not the only country on the planet that has professional basketball players. Why encourage someone to do something else if they really wanna do something. Thats like telling them they r going to fail. Dont wish ill for the kid, wish him the best.

@livinggreatness It's a damn shame that rappers and ball players are mostly what black kids want to be. Why not promote academia? I know so many smart young black kids whose parents are pushing them to be sports stars or singers when they really aren't that good. They'd fit in much better in a job where they have to actually use their brains. Stop selling your kids short. It's as if if black parents are afraid to see their kids succeed in anything other than entertaining the masses.

@TheDreamReborn See an issue is that they see them as being very rich and successful. A lot of rappers have promoted academia by getting their masters and their degrees, they just dont speak about it. Its not that these parents are selling their kids short, they just want their kids to be rich. Being an academic is great if u find a subject u are good at. Music and Sports although i believe both are very exploitive to blacks are what will last forever in making kids some money. or even adults.

just cuz some one grades are not good in school does not mean they are stupid. u sound really ignorant with that statement about the kid is as dumb as a rock, academics is not a accurate measurement of a persons intelligence. albert einstien was horrible in school but the man was a genious. and i think all new york buses have cameras on them

I just don't understand - If Black people are treated so poorly by White people, why do they prefer to live with White people instead of their own kind? I feel sorry for your children. I can tell you gonna shoot their dreams down. I can understand wncouraging a child to have a back up plan, but its something completely different to try and beat down their dreams. Education through a university is NOT the only or even the BEST route to success.

I don't care what the reasons were for CNN making the show. The way I see it everybody makes money off of something. I LOVED this program especially the kids going to Africa and the schools in Harlem and CT. Inspirational.

Black kids are not stupid, but some of our parents are. Some of the parents are bad examples to these kids because of their lifestyle. These kids grow up thinking the only thing they will amount to is what their parents are, which is not good most of the time. Some of the parents don't motivate them to learn. Tell them it's ok to go play outside instead of making them sit down to do homework. Some can't even help their children because they didn't take school seriously. EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT

Most parents never show up my mum (she teaches)calls before she leaves school and then when she gets home and most times they just curse at her. When they do get there the only question they have is why did the teacher yell at their child for disrupting the class. I saw like a week after that incident the 44 had about 4 cameras but they do need it just last week on the b35 a grown man threw a glass bottle at the bus driver.

Just because the kids making bad grades in school doesn't not mean his is stupid. He probably is not applying himself or he just has not found a learning style that suits him best. The word stupid to me means that you are incapable of learning a variety of subject matter. His interest is not in academics but in basketball. If he showed an intense interest in academics , I am sure he would be sucessful academic fields.

I never saw that show, and kinda would never really bother, it just seesm like they would look for the worst of the worst; my job takes me for areas from the Hamptons to the Bronx, and I see it all from all walks of life, and from what I can gather, the whole school would probably not be those 4 kids.

And I can't say I've noticed the difference on the Nassau/Queens border, I guess it depends on where you are. I know Valley Stream and Rosedale, don't look too different, Great Neck and Little Neck kinda mirror each other...

I agree. The entire school is most likely not best represented by those group of kids they focused on, but from my experience in a Brooklyn High School, the majority of students were content with a 65(passing grade) on their report cards..
